    When a character in a video game must explore their own psyche to progress through the game. Although this can be metaphorical, more often than not, the character does so literally.

     Character self-exploration most often occurs in a dream and is often induced by some form of drugs or magic. The locations tend to be mirrors of important places from the character's past and they often reveal something of the character's psyche using personal objects such as photographs and diaries to trigger memories and reveal information.
