Man i am really looking foward to this game but deep down inside im sheepish because I did not like Oblivion a whole lot. i thought it was too big and without direction. I felt overwhemled most of the time and i really gave it a chance but i never warmed up to it.
To my understanding this game has a smaller scope which might ease me a bit ,but still.
    What do you guys think?

Of course, I haven't played it, but from what I've seen of the PitBoy, it seems better organized than in Oblivion. Then again, I didn't find Oblivion to be too big neither.

I don't know, but supposedly it's very similar. I'd be wary, maybe rent it first.

I think it may be best to rent the game first for you. It may be a bit smaller is scope, but it will likely be pretty similar so I'd rent it first to make sure you're into it.

Haha, it didn't age well? It only came out 2 years ago, man. How could it be outdated already?
Personally I haven't had a very good experience with Oblivion, and actually I had no idea that Fallout 3 is supposed to be similar to it.

If you mean in literal size, Tamriel:Washington DC, then no Fallout 3 is smaller. About 3/4 smaller. But, there will be a lot of content in the game. Over 100 hours.

I hate to say that it's a big possibility you might feel the same way about Fallout 3, but I would give it a try and rent it when it's out just to make sure.

Well the gameplay is a bit different since most weapons will be ranged rather than melee here. There is also that "whatever it's called" system where you stop time and pick a body part. I think the gameplay will be decent, but I doubt most people are going into this game for the gameplay.

I know it sounds weird, but I mean the core gameplay of shooting. I probably should have been more specific. I think people are hyped for this game because of the story and the fact that your actions (supposedly) will affect the world differently each time. For the atmosphere and the exploration. But I don't think people are looking to this game for some kick ass shooter gameplay like a COD, or a Halo etc. Right after I posted that I knew it wasn't likely specific enough.

Nope...just the core combat because that's what is usually the biggest complaint of Bethesda games.

Did you played the original Fallout?
if you are a fan of "Gears of War 2", i suggest you to never go through this kind of RPG games.
even if you enjoyed Jerk Effect, same will be suggested.
But if you really want to play RPG, start from Fallout and Diablo, and Final Fantasy. I'm not an old school gamer though because i'm a little young for this. ask the elders(!) about it.

The devs said that Fallout 3 will be smaller than Oblivion and the game's quest seem to be similar to KoTOR's sidequests.....which were the best designed sidequests ever.

I really want to get this but there are so many other games coming out soon, I don't see how I'll have the time to play through Fallout.  Maybe I'll save it for after the holiday season when there aren't that many high profile games coming out.

    Given that Oblivion was crap...

...and all the Elder Scrolls games are crap...

...I'm assuming that Oblivion: The Apocalypse will be crap.

But I'm still going to play it so I can completely back up and justify its crapiness.

Ya I'm going to give it a try as well. Elder Scrolls was a sub-par game, boring combat. Or I'm just not a fan of those games, not sure, but I wanted to like it. Fallout on the other hand looks to be a lot more fun. I had doubts about it but then I watched the gameplay demo videos on the XBLM and decided to possibly rent and decide whether to buy.

I still think morrowind was the best in the series. Also, it didnt have stripped down char creation.
But I'm reaaaaally looking forward to Fallout 3. I just hope they didn't mess it up completly. Also, the, in my opinion worst thing about Oblivion, level relative enemies is not to be found in F3.
On topic: I don't think you will like it if Oblivion was not straight enough for you.

I feel ya, but if they fix some things (how you level up, how the game levels up), then its worth it.

Eh why? You can simply see the similarities in the gameplay videos. I.e. the graphics or camera. But You can clearly see the differences. Also, its a totally different setting and character system. So if they don't mess up the combat and bring an interesting world to life (which Fallout NEEDS), they can't do much wrong.

I'm gonna agree with Kush -- probably most of the people who are excited for this game are the same people who are excited for new Elder Scrolls games, e.g. willing to ignore flawed combat in favor of the overall experience.

I sank hundreds of hours into Morrowind, but it definitely wasn't because I loved the combat system. I would think that if you're placing that much importance on the combat in Fallout 3, then you'll end up disliking it.

While I enjoyed Oblivion, it did feel as if the story wasn't organized and there was no direction. But so far, Fallout 3 has a much more engaging plot and I never feel as if I'm just running around pointlessly. I think Fallout 3 sort of pushes you a little more to go in the right direction. Even though I can't prove this, I can just feel it somehow.

I also think the environment and atmosphere is much more creative and immersive than Cyrodiil. If you think about it, Fallout 3 can really happen in real life! I think this reason and a few others explain why I can relate more to Fallout 3 than I can with Oblivion. Oblivion also uses the old medieval theme. It's OK, but just like all the WWII crap, there's only so much one can handle before it gets dull.
