People have asked what mods we would like to see, and they will certainly be coming, but modders aren't waiting for the toolset to put together mods. As if you needed further proof that this is still the same broken, ancient engine. Fallout 4 Nexus currently has a bunch of mods already up although don't expect the usual mods yet. A lot of small tweak and features.

Anyway, share whatever you're currently using so we can sift through the first wave of bad mods. Note, depending on the mod it might not be as simple as it is in previous games. You will need to edit ini and plugin text files to enable mods, but nothing too complicated. I can add a small guide if requested.

    • No Perk Level Requirements - The levels stopped me from specialising in being a sneaky lockpicking thief right off the bat. Not anymore!
    • White Teeth - I know hygiene isn't super important after the world ends, but looking at Piper or Mama Murphy's teeth really made me feel sick. This fixes that.
    • Quieter Turrets & Quieter Generators - They're super loud! You can use these to lower it to your liking, and I like having it really quiet because it doesn't make me want to put generators really far away.
    • Customize Legendary Enemy Spawning - I like seeing legendary enemies. You can customise how often they spawn to your liking. I went with 5x (Survival is 3x)
    • Brighter Pip Boy Map - The contrast on the map is so bad, and makes the edges of land and terrain very indistinct. Try this out if that bothers you.

I've also used console commands to raise stats, give perks, set item carry weight, reveal map markers. A bunch of other stuff. For those that don't know there are a bunch of ini tweaks that make the game more PC friendly such as disabling mouse acceleration, framerate, disable intro movies and delay etc. I can also post these if people want to know what they are.

I should mention the mod that everybody is talking about right now, which changes the text to the full line of dialogue so you don't end up saying things you don't mean to say. I'm using the original layout version at the moment with full lines because there are some issues but you can style it as a list. One step in the right direction.

    Carry Weight Mod

    Pip Boy/Spotlight shadows

shadows have the largest performance cost so be careful with these

I am about to try this Longer distance pipboy light/optional shadows

Optimized Vanilla Textures I'm trying these not sure if it's helping, i will overide when more hd textures come out

    like these Vivid LandscapeVivid rocks

Enboost performance fix I'm not sure how much it's helping atm but it's not hurting anything and will be needed for future mods

Most important to the visuals IMO Enhanced Wasteland Sweetfx I'm using a modified version of this through radeonpro

Never Lose dogmeat Simple .bat file to summon dogmeat if he gets lost

I have a couple armor textures that i forgot to track

@oursin_360: I find it preferable to use the console to increase carry weight rather than loading an esp file but there are some cases where you should use it instead. Also, dogmeat shouldn't get lost as long as you have only 1 dog house in a settlement, though I've had people completely vanish so not surprised.

I'm downloading the longer distance light mod now because I've used a similar mod in all the previous games. Never works far enough.

I almost went the command console route but some posts on the mod made me change my mind, something about having to redo it each time you leveled strength or got any kinda armor that boosted your carry weight etc. Just seems like way less work to not have to worry at all about it anymore.

And even though i have the dogmeat command, i've been using someone else and have yet to see dogmeat again lol. He's not in sanctuary by his dog house so i have no clue where he is. I believe there is a newer .bat file that works like that with all companions but i haven't tried it.

@oursin_360: that is probably because those people are using setav instead of modav. There are issues that can arise with certain commands. modav has worked perfectly fine. Not something everyone knows or could know without research or trial and error. I have mine set to 2000 and it puts your actual carry weight on top of that and grows with it.

Have you scrapped all of the additional dog houses in sanctuary? He won't go to the one you build unless there aren't any others. I had to do the console command for a vault 81 resident because he completely vanished, probably clipped through the world (almost everyone has had him disappear though and I don't believe it's the same as the dogmeat thing where he's just hanging out somewhere).

@alistercat Nope I haven't touched the dog houses at all or built one myself, maybe that's the issue most people were having i don't know. Once i decide to use him again i'll see what happens, i have some dope dog armor i want to try out lol.

I so far am using one that doubles the output of generators (I think this is correct, you need to build a stupid amount of generators otherwise) and one that lets you use armor pieces with any armor, even if it clips through.

I am thinking about a carry mod only because now that I'm into the crafting I pick up a lot of junk or even buy some from vendors and some of it is heavy but necessary to get stuff like copper or gears. Otherwise I run into encumbrance issues but I get why that's part of the game and it doesn't usually bug me (I always keep STR enhancing stuff on hand for this issue and I use the Buffout for this in F4).

I would like to do the Quieter mod for generators and turrets. And I'm keeping an eye on the rest but nothing so far.

I'm using Darker Nights - for, well, darker nights.

Full Dialogue Interface - so I know what my responses are. Works well with a controller thankfully.

Glorious Female Nude mod - uh, well, I was curious. And something about it can be hilarious. Can't wait for the male version when they open up the creation tool!

Lowered Weapons - I hate running around pointing my gun at everything and find this much more immersive. Works both in 1st and 3rd person.

More Hairstyles for Male - All the lady hair, now for men too! Too bad it doesn't go both ways.

Pipboyshadows - Lights should make shadows, also it looks better that way.

Eyes of Beauty - Cuz I like eyes and want them to be textured like it's 2015, not 2004.

WET Water Enhancement - Makes the water look better!

Other than this I have some .bat files to remove limits on outpost building, changing of weather since I want it to be raining and/or radstorming 24/7. Also some .bat files for easy summoning of companions since they're elusive at best.

Apart from getting rid of the hacking mini-game I'm mainly using some texture replacements. Lowered Weapons is the only one I couldn't live without.

So far, Darker Nights, WET, the conversation one mentioned above, and one that let's you build extra shit in your bases. That one does t add a great deal of stuff, and most of it isn't very interesting, but now I have a motorbike I can pretend like I fixed.

@geirr: Dude I stared at the Eyes of Beauty mod preview screenshot for like 5 minutes and I really see no difference.

No installed mods for me. I upped my carry weight and gave myself a few hundred bonus caps though.

I didn't spot much difference in the screenshots either, but in-game it's quite noticeable, I swear!

i actually forgot but i have FO4 Rain, Enhanced Blood, and WET. I read that Lowered weapons caused issues with pipboyshadow so i never used it? I haven't used the mod manager since i started modding before it was compatible, if i started would i need to reinstall everything or would it register the mods i have?

Playing on PS4. I upped the aim sensitivity in the options because the default was a little slow for my preference.

I also changed the pip-boy colour to white, really nice that they streamlined that.

Essentially removed encumbrance via console and was using a bat file to up Settlement size to what I thought was double but ended up being like 4x or 5x.

Haven't used anything else yet, but I just grabbed the turret/generator sound one though, as well as one that bumps generator power output. Now I don't need a bunch of giant, super loud engines idling around.

Lowered Weapons was awesome, except the weapon currently stays lowered even in combat and it bothers me so much I'm waiting for the next version. Likewise with Full Dialogue Interface, it's really great, but the fact that some lines are so long they spread to off-screen is pretty annoying. Also I got the Red Sox jerseys mod before their lawyers expunged it from the internet because that thing belongs in a museum! And I'm a sucker for cutesy stuff like that.

All in all, I can't wait for two years from now - the mods for this game are going to be amazing.

@oursin_360: NMM isn't working 100% with Fallout 4, for me anyway. If you de-activate a mod which has a selection menu (like Darker Nights) the re-activate it later, I don't get the menu and NMM just dumps all the esps in my Data folder. Remove the mod entirely, then install it again, and I find it works fine.

@dave_tacitus Hmm, i think i'll pass on it for now then as installing mods isn't all that difficult anyway (just gets a bit bogged down with all the texture mods etc).

    Heavy SSAO

Here's a mod i found today, i think you can just edit the INI settings but i'm not sure so i just used the esp as well. haven't tried yet but i like darker corners lol

@dave_tacitus: I did it a couple of times today and didn't have that issue. Got menus for the Legendary mod and blood retexture.

The no level requirements is broken on Nexus Mod Manager btw. There's a hotfix file from a different modder though that works. If anyone else is using it.

@alistercat: I not only updated NMM just now but did a fresh install and it's still not working properly for me with scripted installers. Weird.

I've been using NMM since it launched.

EDIT - Ok, then. Looks like the fault was on my end!

I'd not used scripted installers since I stopped playing Skyrim and NMM has had a fair few revisions since. Previously I'd uninstall a mod by double-clicking but with the current NMM this just disables it. Double clicking again simply enables the mod with your previous options.

To uninstall it properly you need to right click and select Uninstall.

Move along, nothing to see here!

Been trying out Shadow Boost, rather than dropping my shadow distance. I'm running a 4670K/980ti combo and still get framerate drops to the low 40s in places with Shadow Distance on Ultra or even High. The mod works pretty darned well.

great mod right here, I guess the latest mods on nexus doesn't update all the time because i missed this and i check it regularly lol. I also missed this one

    Realistic Lights

Takes away a lot of the fake lights in the game that don't come from anywhere or cast shadows, i use the indoor version right now but i may try the full one and see what it's like.

    Video Comparison

On another note why can't i embed youtube videos like everybody else? i haven't been able to since i've joined but i see other people do it. weird.

I'm only using one mod at the moment, Improved Map with Visible Roads. There are some other mods I'm curious about (several building mods), but for now I just want to see how they develop. After modding Skyrim,Fallout 3 and Fallout NV an insane amount I'm always wary about new mods until they've had some testing.

I cannot stress enough how great the full dialogue is. I am still leaving the diamond shaped interface because they put similar types of responses in the same position and that hasn't yet been correctly mapped to the list style. I wouldn't want to play without it.

I have tried that but I would recommend the 50% version of this mod instead but it's subjective. I found the visible roads map to look a bit rough whereas this is somewhere between vanilla and visible roads.

@oursin_360: I was going to install the performance fix but something about the ENB stuff seemed weird to me. I can't put my finger on it, but the whole process of installing that stuff seemed... unsafe? I don't know, I'm probably just being paranoid for not wanting to install stuff from a Russian website.

As for the quiet generators and turrets, does anyone know if there's a good mod for quiet SETTLERS? Every time I go back to Sanctuary to do some crafting, Marcy and Jun are always there making snide and mopey (respectively) comments at me.

I'm playing on PS4, so I'm not going to see mods anytime soon, but here are my initial wants from mods for settlements, when they finally come to PS4:

    • Electricity Streamlined - I understand having the need for wires to connect between individual buildings, but once you attach a conduit to a building and wire it to a generator/pylon, it should power everything in the building.
    • Neon signs/lights - Whenever I go to Diamond City, I just think about how I want to make cool neon lights for my settlement(s).
    • More lightbox controls - the light squares are cool, but take too much power and you have no control over them outside of assigning color. Also, I want to be able to control individual lights from the same terminal: make each light a different color, etc.
    • Locking furniture placements - I like some flexibiity, but with my OCD, I get frustrated when I can perfectly align furniture parallel/corner to walls/buildings.

lol, i mean worst thing is maybe running a bitcoin mine out of the game? I don't know, ENB is widely used and cosigned since skyrim and fallout 3. There really isn't anything to it but putting the files in the directory same as any Sweetfx,Reshade type mode. Most of the future graphics mods will use it and when the hires texture mods start happening it will likely be necessary as it forces ram to be used as vram. As far as the performance fix right now, i haven't really noticed much i just use it for textures and frame capping right now. (I like not having to restart the game to cap the framerate)

Y'all need Shadowboost. It dynamically adjusts shadow distance to maintain a user set target FPS. So you get the best of both long shadow distance when you can handle it (out of the city) and shorter in the city to maintain a solid framerate.
