It's my first time playing any Fallout game, and I'm really digging it. I've clocked over 400 hours in Skyrim with Deadly Dragons and on Master difficulty most of the time, so I'm no stranger to a challenge and some of the builds and how-to's that is similar to Fallout NV. I don't need any specific help, but if you've got any tips, tricks or whatever, do share! No spoilers of course, thank you.

Save very very often. New Vegas specifically has a tendency to crash at the worst times (right on a loading screen but while the game is still auto-saving) and it corrupts your auto-save. Its not like Skyrim where it has multiple autosaves, either.

NEVER put 10 points into any SPECIAL attribute. There is a medical clinic that near new vegas that will let you buy implants for your SPECIAL stats. You can add 1 implant for every point of your initial endurance, so keep that in mind.

If you have all the DLC and plan on playing them, a high INT isnt as necessary as it used to be, I maxed all my stats by 40 with 9 INT. If you dont have all the DLC, then high INT is a priority.

Charisma is useless, always has been, always will be.

Dont worry too much about pissing off the NCR/Cesaer's Legion, at a certain point in the main storyline both sides will forgive any crime you have committed to them, but be warned this is a one time deal.

Also to add to that, pissing off either of the main factions will start hit squads to appear in the wasteland at random to attack you, at early levels they can be a bitch so wait till you have some firepower to take them out.

Survival is only important if you are doing hardcore mode. For your first time playing a fallout I would avoid that for now, but it's your choice.

The Karma system is meaningless, steal to your heart's content just dont get caught.

Speech and Intelligence make the game harder but also more fun cause you have more options.

I invested everything in talking, hacking, locking, stealth and regular guns cause I want to see EVERYTHING!
(I'm now stuck in the terrible Casino DLC which is just aweful so I stopped. Don't buy that)

Speech, Guns, Survival. Also play on hardcore mode because drinking water to survive is fun. No, really. I enjoyed it.

Level those gun skills up first and get yourself some armor piercing rounds. You'll need em. Also may want to get a companion early on to help out on some fights. Won't tell you who, but you'll know him when you see him.

    This.

Keep in mind that I'm saying this as someone who usually specs in a brute force way. My characters are generally not very smart in any RPG, but in New Vegas speech is something very useful because the opportunities to use it come up often. Sure, you can get through the game without it, but you'll probably have to do something you don't want to and you'll make less money and spend more money on ammo and equipment repair.

So, yes, make sure your speech skill is high.

EDIT: Another thing - New Vegas isn't level scaled, at least nowhere near the same level that Fallout 3 was. You're meant to go about things in a more linear manner, so don't go off trying to fight Cazadors and Deathclaws at level 5 unless you just really like getting fucked over and over.

All build choices aside, I found the Hardcore mode surprisingly fun after a first playthrough, so definitely try that. Try all the followers would also be my advice. My fav Fallout for sure and I liked all the DLC, OWB especially.

@fetchfox: Real Badasses make it through the deathclaw infested road to New Vegas right off the bat instead of going around.

This allows you to skip a huge chunk of the game, it's especially useful if you want to get the hardcore achievement/trophy. It is brutally difficult however, even on the easiest setting. Hell, hanging out on that path even later in the game with crazy powerful guns and all is still hard because muthaphukkin deathclaws be swarmin you son.

Also get those implants, they are real useful.

I recommend doing a no (direct) kill run.

Which mostly consists of a lot of speech and companion use, I found it really satisfying standing back wearing a suit while my enemies were vaporised.

@fetchfox: If you aren't playing this on PC, you really should. It will run pretty well on lower end gaming PCs. There are some amazing mods that really take the game to the next level.

Speech and intelligence are very important so make sure those are high. Build wise, its really depends on how you wanna play but guns, speech, medicine, repair, and survival are pretty useful.

    • I'd recommend doing a playthrough focusing on high Speech and a playthrough where you just murder everyone you see. Both are fun for different reasons.
    • If you're achievement hunting, having 8-10 Luck allows you to win 90-100% of all Blackjack hands by just hitting every time.
    • Fuck Caravan.

@icicle7x3: I have all the DLCs, so I'll get there. @believer258: Hm, interesting. I put a lot into science and repair, but maybe I'll put more into speech as well. @vinny_says: Yeah, not gonna do that. I'm gonna get some implants, but far from there yet (haven't even been to Vegas).

I'm playing on a PC that maxes Skyrim, and I've modded that a lot. I've added a few things to F:NV, but nothing major yet.

Also about to start my first play through despite this game sitting on a shelf for 2 years. Had a blast with F3 but haven't been in the mood for another game like that the past few years.

Awesome. I highly recommend the mods "New Vegas Redesigned," "Nevada Skies," "Mission Mojave," and "NMC's Texture Pack."

If you are frequently crashing during loading you might want to turn off auto saves.

Just have fun with it & you do encounter plenty of locked computers/doors/containers so be sure to pump up those skills so you can get everything out of those. Also with hacking the computers, exit before hitting the last pick & try again, quicker than reloading a save.

@rentacop: I've never played F3, but if you like well crafted characters, you will love New Vegas.

@mcghee: I'll check those out, and I've already installed that texture pack. It took some time, large effin pack. @fox01313: I'll remember that, thanks.

I'm loving the game, I can't fathom why I never had any interest in these games before. Here are some screenshots from my travels (it's in 1280x1024 because I only have an old monitor at the moment).
