I don't know about Boone, but Rex got lost once and never came back. Someone mentioned he might be back with The King, and he was - even though I explicitly told him to go back to the Lucky 38. In case you lose Rex too =P

i would be very cautious about sending companions to the lucky 38 if you are far away.  it's much safer to quick travel to new vegas and then send them inside.  also, as Infininja said, they do indeed travel in real time, so sending boone to the lucky 38 from novak takes a long time.

and btw this forum has gone way of topic lol, and same here but i told boone to go home and i think i remember him saying he wasnt going to novac he was going somewhere else but cant remember what he said

No they dont i have used a console command and i still get achievements, (i wasnt useing it to up my skills tho i used it to get out of somwhere coz it was glitching) "

When told to go the lucky 38 you can usually find your companions waiting in your presidential suite.
