I'm curious about what control scheme PC users are using with this game. I have a 360 gamepad connected to my PC and FNV recognized it automatically the first time I booted the game. I tried it a bit, but found it too unconfortable for me, so I switched to kb+mouse. What about you, GiantBomb? Are you playing this as a console game on PC, or as a kb+mouse PC game?
Fallout: New Vegas

PC Users: Keyboard+Mouse or Gamepad?
It's a first person shooter, so keyboard and mouse gives you the most manoeuvrability. It's also nice for selecting parts in VATS to e able to use a mouse. Xbox360 controller is perfectly fine as an option though.
Keyboard and mouse is far superior in most pc games, unless it's racing. The mouse adds a nice level of precision and the keyboard allows for many different combinations of keys. MMORPG's are a prime example of this. My configuration for shooters is pretty decent, I never have to move my fingers hardly more than one key over, because my mouse has two thumb buttons, so most weapon stuff stays on my right hand.
Hm, that's probably because you are not used to it." I would prefer the 360 controller hooked up because I hate the clunkiness of keyboards and mouse. Plus, you can sit sit on a chair or couch and play it with a controller. "
I'm playing it with mouse+keyboard, but could also imagine playing it with a gamepad. On 2nd thought it's a lot easier with m&k and to me it feels more natural than playing with a gamepad.
Who says I'm not used to it? I've played PC games ever since I was extremely young, playing old games like Traffic Department 2192, Diablo 2, Deus Ex, Age of Empires, Hexen 1 and 2, among many others." @xyzygy said:

I just prefer the portability and ergonomics of the 360 controller while playing PC games, for the ones I have that support it.

I started out with the gamepad but kept getting ganked cause I couldnt pinpoint who I was shooting so switched to keyboard and mouse and its been awesome.
For those who has been pc gamers most of their life, they usually use keyboard and mouse. I only use a gamepad for racing games and street fighter 4, however everything else like gta games, I use a keyboard and mouse. That's how you can tell life long pc gamers from more recent pc players that were console gamers.
" @Creigz said:Yeah, basically the more precision and ability to aim faster makes it far superior." @Fragstoff said:also, aiming? "" controller for a PC FPS game ?LOLOLLOLOOLOLOLOLOLOLOOOOLLL "This laughter here is correct. The issue with the gamepad is the lack of ability to whip around super fast. Hence why a mouse is better in that regard. "
KB+M
it's not the right type of game for a gamepad imo
I prefer to leave gamepads for games like Force Unleashed 2 and such that are action games designed for console anyway
Keyboard and mouse here too. I don't mind playing first-person games with a gamepad, but I grew up on the keyboard/mouse combo, so... Yeah.
I play it on cintiq it's a very tactile experience." I prefer a dual Wacom tablets with 4D mice setup. "
FNV with mouse and keyboard / Third person cam, otherwise I wouldn't be getting the string of iron sight headshot crits all the time.

" I would love to use a gamepad, but I talk to people on the vents while I play. "
I don't get it, I do the same everytime I'm on PC (on vent 24/7) and I have no problem using a gamepad. Try voice activation with a really low sensitivity threshold.
Usually I would say mouse and keyboard all the way, however the precision granted by this is negated at least at low levels, by your poor guns skill. I find that in close quarters gun battles finding the v key to enter vats can be awkward and result in me getting shot more often than I like. I'm playing on hardcore so crippling is an issue(yeah, yeah I should get better at games etc etc). Navigating the menus is bad on both versions ( a Bethesda trademark) but I think its worse under mouse and keyboard.
Yup. Although I made an exception for GTA and ghostbusters. I spend most of my time in a car in GTA IV so those anallog sticks really make a difference. Ghostbusters is just a crap port job where instead of actually implimenting the mouse properly, the mouse seems to emulate an analog stick. It's so akward.
Kb/M for me with rare exceptions.
@HitmanAgent47: Do you mean the old GTA games, because I couldn't stand the driving in GTA4 without a gamepad.
I could go either way. Since I mainly use VATS, I don't need the precision of the mouse. Also, I like to sit a ways back from my screen sometimes in lieu of being six inches away at all times, and for that I use a gamepad. I won't deny the effectiveness of a keyboard/mouse, though.
While I'm always pro keyboard and mouse, I can excuse this game simply because of the VATS targeting, and it's so damn addicting that playing for long stretches upright in a computer chair kills my back and makes my ass numb. leaning back in a more comfortable recliner and not having that horrible mouse/wrist pain is nice. Or maybe I just need to buy a new computer chair.
" Why is this up for comparison? K/B obviously. "Because console gamers like to pretend that a gamepad is just as good for shooters, and when PC gamers point this out this call us "elitists". Ugh. Can you imagine someone calling you an elitist for saying a BMW M3 is a better car than a Honda Civic?
" @Tru3_Blu3 said:Mind you, I never, ever, ever said either option is superior to the other. I'm just curious about how PC gamers are approaching the control scheme of FNV. I tend to prefer keyboard+mouse, but I do understand how a gamepad may be appealing to some. It certainly is more confortable in terms of movement, though quite less for aiming, IMO." This question is about what you're using on a PC, so I don't really see the relevance in bringing up console gamers. Personally, I don't think you'd be accused of elitism nearly as much if you abandoned this silly "them vs. us" attitude. Or you could simply stop caring about what strangers on the internet accuse you of being." @Tru3_Blu3 said:

Just my opinion.
Admittedly I could also care less about what others think: cross play between Games for Windows Live and Xbox Live was scrapped for a reason and I don't see the option of using a mouse and keyboard for playing PC games going anywhere in the next 100 years XD
" @JoeyRavn: @Meowshi: I was simply addressing what the other user asked. Besides, I'm not the one bringing up a "them vs. us" argument. I just find it incredibly annoying when console players try to make the control pad sound like the superior control option for everything when it isn't even close. Admittedly I could also care less about what others think: cross play between Games for Windows Live and Xbox Live was scrapped for a reason and I don't see the option of using a mouse and keyboard for playing PC games going anywhere in the next 100 years XD "I know. I'm just making clear that my intention was never to troll gamepad or keyboard+mouse users or console gamers :)
not that i actually own new vegas, but i imagine i'd play it using keyboard and mouse, as i did with fallout 3. the only time i ever use a controller through my pc is when the mouse and keyboard just cannot keep up. otherwise, it's keyboard and mouse all day, everyday.
Why are you holding your keyboard?" Gamepad. They are more comfortable to hold and VATS make it so you don't need the extra accuracy you get from a mouse. I also like that you don't have to push a button to change between walking and running. "
I don't get how a gamepad can be more comfortable, your hands are more spread out and relaxed when using a mouse and keyboard, my MX1100 is an incredibly comfortable mouse and feels way nicer in the hand than a 360/PS3 pad does.
Anyway, I use keyboard and mouse, I could just use my TV and sit at my sofa with a pad (PC is connected to TV) but I'd rather just use keyboard and mouse along with my headphones, I prefer using Dolby Headphone over my 5.1 speakers, feels more immersive.
Edit: I don't see much benefit from using keyboard and mouse in this game aside from managing inventory, if it was a competitive FPS I wouldn't go near a pad though. My decision is purely because I wanna use my headphones instead of speakers, that and sitting at my desk with a pad would feel weird.
