I am going to pick up Skyrim soon for my PC but I saw Fallout: New Vegas for $4.99 on Steam today. I just finished up with Fallout 3 a while ago. Is FO:NV worth playing and putting off Skyrim for even for just another week or two? I cannot make up my mind. I know that once I play Skyrim I won't go back to the other Bethesda games. Any advice is appreciated!
Fallout: New Vegas
Game » consists of 25 releases. Released Oct 19, 2010
The post-apocalyptic Fallout universe expands into Nevada in this new title in the franchise. As a courier once left for dead by a mysterious man in a striped suit, the player must now set out to find their assailant and uncover the secrets of the enigmatic ruler of New Vegas.
Should I skip Fallout: New Vegas and go straight to Skyrim?

No, there are important plot point in New Vegas that are talked about extensively in Skyrim
LMAO.

well they aint connected by story, it all goes down to if you want the other more or not
So if I've just had my fill with Fallout 3, should I just skip to Skyrim?
Aye, New Vegas is slightly dated compared to Skyrim, but the writing quality is vastly superior in New Vegas. I find it hard to play Bethesda games now because of it. Overall, I think I found myself more satisfied with New Vegas, but it depends on whether you like the massive open world adventuring Bethesda is good for or the professional intriguing writing Obsidian is good for.
I wouldn't compare Fallout 3 and NV. They're much different in terms of writing and pacing. Even the setting is significantly different.
You do know that Fallout and Skyrim are set in different universes, right? Aside from the code and format the games are completely different. I would buy Fallout NV and play it later but just buy Skyrim and play it now. You won't regret it.

You should play through New Vegas thoroughly, and then jump into Skyrim. That's my advice.
You find out that the Khajit are just irradiated house cats. No, there are important plot point in New Vegas that are talked about extensively in Skyrim

Of course, but my concern is going back to NV AFTER playing Skyrim. I don't want it to seem like an old poopy game after playing what seems to be a serious GOTY contender.
Fantasy setting connects to me more so.. that obviously is my awnser.
But it won't be like you are doing something compeltely irrational by playing Fallout.
If you've had your fill of Fallout, go straight to Skyrim. If you want, you can pick up New Vegas on Steam today for cheap and play it whenever you get around to it (which is usually what I do when Steam sales crop up).
I dislike RPGs in general; Fallout 3 I loathed, and I was told that New Vegas was highly similar. I am loving Skyrim, however.
From what I know (based off my own perceptions) - go for Skyrim as it's a different to what you've just finished, and you're expressing an interest in playing it already.
It's 5 bucks, grab it. Even if you don't play it right away.
If your even thinking about it then your interested in playing, so get it while you can get ALL of it for 14 bucks. You'll be bummed when your only option is the GOTY edition for 30 bucks that will drop next year.
FO:3 is the better game, but FO:NV has some pretty good writing.

it is worth 20$.. buy it for 5$ and enjoy what is more Fallout. The games are different except for the open world and well.. combat :D for 5$ it is worth it just to get the game and play when you want to. I bought NV on launch night and I love it even with the many glitches that come with the normal bethesda game. Skyrim has stolen my soul and about 75 hours of my life already but that is what the game is for! Buy NV for 5$ and enjoy it till you get skyrim and you might find you dislike it but hey, it was only 5$ right?!? If you like it then you will have 2 games to enjoy in your time.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I found New Vegas to be dramatically better than Fallout 3. It succeeds mostly in due part to the raw number of viable playstyles available as well as generally superior writing from anything Bethesda has done. The shooting is still bad, the game is still pretty unstable and the game world is still brown, but for $5 it is clearly worth checking out.
That, and after you play Skyrim it may be harder to go back. Maybe if the internet hasn't told you yet: That game is pretty great.
If you have any interest at all in NV, I would buy it. Skyrim is one of those games that you really don't need to play right away (even if it is really good).
Bethesda games are about going through copious dungeons and having one dialogue choice. Obsidian games are about branching story paths and good writing.
Both are about clipping through the environment and upside down faces.
Fixed it for ya. Well dude, New Vegas was built using the same engine as Oblivion. So it's an old game (in a way). I'd say Skyrim, but fallout is still a great franchise (still my favorite, although Skyrim bumped Elder Scrolls to #2), and you should eventually pick up New Vegas.Yes. New Vegas was a fun game.

well, to be fair, vegas is already pretty damn brown, so the nuclear holocaust wasn't going to do THAT any favors...

The mechanics are different enough were you won't feel like you're going back to an older game. Plus the writing style and dialogue choices are different enough in both games that you can have a good time in NV after playing Skyrim.
You can buy it and save it for a rainy day. Unlike most people, I kind of dislike New Vegas. Or maybe I'm just fatigued on that version of the engine. I don't know... but I kind of petered out on New Vegas.
At that price I'd totally still buy it, but don't put off Skyrim for it. Start it, see if it hooks into you. If not, then you can always have it to go back to eventually, whether you expect to right now or not.

Good point if you are refering to NV. I got very tired looking at that world and quit after 80 plus hours. I'm thinking I want to go back and finish the story, at least.
New Vegas is not a good game, don't listen to what people tell you. The story is 100% shit, besides some good dialogue their is no fucking reason to play it.
New Vegas is worth a playthrough.
It's an incredibly frustrating game though. They do things with the characters, story, freedom and branching paths that Bethesda couldn't even dream of. But...Freezing, broken quests, and missing companions will all be common occurrences for you; if you can't accept that, stay far away.
Apparently New Vegas is very good, but anyone I talked to seemed to enjoy Skyrim more.
But for a fiver? You can't really lose, if you liked fallout 3, New Vegas is more of the same, but with a more refined system to it, at least, that's what I've been told. And patches have taken the glitches out, so yeah...buy it too, if you have the cash!
I went for New Vegas. If I get even 20 hours out of it I think I'll have had more than my money's worth.
it's definitely worth playing still. although the engine in new vegas is...dated. i'm sure there's a decent amount of mods to remedy that a little bit though.
New Vegas is a much better game than Fallout 3 - it has better writing, some signature Obsidan deconstruction of popular RPG tropes and it improves on some shit, so yeah, I'd say go for it. It's pretty much proof that if the Fallout 3 team had actual writers on board, I would really like that game.
I seriously disliked Fallout 3, but judging by your post, buy NV, but play Skyrim now so you can have go through it with the rest of us :)
I was about halfway through New Vegas and I jumped right into Skyrim so I could be part of the "conversation" of the game that's going on right now, both online and with my friends. I got to a point where I was just trying to get through New Vegas as quickly as possible just so I could play Skyrim, but that's no way to play one of these guys. So I just decided to go back to it later.
