In Fallout 3, it was a good idea to collect things like Nuka Cola Quantums, Pre-War Books, Sugar Bombs, Skill Books, Bobbleheads, Scrap Metal, and other items for money or certain quests. Now that I'm starting New Vegas, I'm curious about which items are important to collect this time around. I've been collecting the usual important Fallout 3 items, but I'm not sure if I should bother doing that in New Vegas. So what kind of stuff is important to collect out here in the west?

In Fallout 3, I remember selling a load of them to the memorabilia collector in Rivet City assuming he'd buy them at a higher price than elsewhere but other than that, did they do anything?

@HandsomeDead:  Well, for instance, you needed Quantums for that quest, pre-war books could be sold to the library for 100 caps each, sugar bombs could be sold for like 60 caps each to some ghoul in the metro (and if you sold enough, you unlocked Super Jet), blood packs could be sold to a vampire guy for 20 caps a pop, scrap metal for 10 caps to Walter (which doesn't seem like much, but Walter was a homeboy so I liked helping him out), and then Bobbleheads and skill books helped improve your character. So I think it's really beneficial to know what to be on the lookout for early on, so I can start collecting from the start. So any ideas as to what kind of specific items I should be collecting would be helpful.

Also, in Fallout 3, there was a Comprehension perk that made skill books worth double the skill points. Is there anything like that in New Vegas, or should I feel free to start using the skill books now?

@TheGreatGuero:   Comprehension is in New Vegas but also Skill books give you +3 now. +4 with  Comprehension.

As for what to collect, I'm not sure. I've asked people and haven't gotten any straight answer. So I pretty much became a kleptomaniac.

    Snowglobes.
    Sunset Sasparilla Star bottlecaps.

A few other things, but those are the two I remember off the top of my head, and the two that you'll see before you get to Primm.

FYI, skill book/magazines are only temporary, I learned that the hard way.

Ah, OK. Is that how it was in F3? I can't remember.

@Nadafinga: In Fallout 3 they only raised a stat by 1, but there were a lot of them. There aren't many in New Vegas so they raise the stat more.

You can collect Scrap Metal for rep with a certain faction, missiles for another faction, and medical supplies (Stimpaks, but also stuff like Fixer and other drugs) for another. Also, you can collect flowers/meat off animals to make things out of them. I've been buying used syringes from merchants wherever I find them because they are a part of the Stimpack recipe — and I've yet to see a single used syringe "in the wild."

Also, I have yet to confirm, but I've looted some NCR dogtags — I'm sure you can turn those in somewhere as well.
