I loved Fallout 3. It was an amazing adventure set in the Fallout universe with tons to do, a huge map to explore, an overwhelming number of quests, and a fairly decent combat system. I put over 200 hours into it, and never even touched the last 2 pieces of DLC (even tho I did buy them, and should do that at some point).
Saying that, I also played through Fallout 1 and 2 several times over the years, and Fallout 3 never felt like a Fallout game. It felt like Bethesda knew how to make a great open world game set in the Fallout universe, but not really how to make a Fallout game. Fallout New Vegas feels like a Fallout game. It has the quirky characters, the always present feeling of a world tearing itself apart at the same time it's trying to rebuild itself, it has the humor that Fallout 1 and 2 had, but that Fallout 3 seriously lacked. It has quest lines that feel more integrated into the world you're exploring, and that are more engaging and branch out in a way that makes more sense.
At the end of the day, I think despite it's many, many technical issues, New Vegas embraces what Fallout fans really wanted out of a Fallout game, the roots of where the universe began and answers to questions that carry over from the original 2 games in the series. Yes, the game seems pushed out for a cash grab at the expense of not enough testing, and obviously it was, but at the same time, assuming those issues are corrected, I think Fallout New Vegas is way more of a game that I can get behind as Fallout lore than Fallout 3 ever was.
Fallout: New Vegas
Game » consists of 25 releases. Released Oct 19, 2010
The post-apocalyptic Fallout universe expands into Nevada in this new title in the franchise. As a courier once left for dead by a mysterious man in a striped suit, the player must now set out to find their assailant and uncover the secrets of the enigmatic ruler of New Vegas.
Technical issues aside, THIS is what a Fallout game should be
They're flipping out about this game over at Duck and Cover.
I've only played through Fallout 2, the first Fallout has a very strange graphical glitch that hinders me in a way that I can't play the game. But, from what I've played of Fallout: New Vegas, it has the charismatic charm that the former Fallout games had, which Fallout 3 really didn't.
Fallout 3 was a much more serious game, not really having fun with itself, that's not to say it was a bad game, it was a excellent game, but it didn't feel like a Fallout game.
I totally agree.
Reading these also make me excited, because I never got the chance to play the first few Fallout games, and I actually thought that Fallout 3 was a serious game. It'll be nice to see a little bit of humor injected into this iteration. I'm about 2 hours into the game, and I'm absolutely loving it. (No glitches, either).
If you're geeky like me, you can totally go into the install directory under \Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\Data\Musicand copy the mp3s out to listen to them anywhere you want." Don't forget about the music! I've heard a few more modern versions of some Fallout 1 and 2 ambient music as I've wondered the Mojave desert. "
You can also access the New Vegas music under \Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\Data\Sound\songs\radionv
Lovin' the game so far!

" @Krakn3Dfx: Yup, Fallout New Vegas is way more like Fallout 1 and 2 than Fallout 3. Also, Fallout 2 had a bunch of bugs too, so it's even more like it than everyone realizes! :D Lovin' the game so far! "Oh man, don't get me started how often Fallout 2 crashed on me whenever I did the "LOLOL You have primed C4 in your pocket." trick.
I have the game but have not pop it in yet and i agree to a point in what you say. yes, its cool to see NCR and others things that was in fallout 1 and fallout 2 but i can't help but feel it still pretty much fallout 3 but with some window dressing. There was great characters in fallout 3 and it did not take itself that serious to me. I think this game just improves what fallout 3 built which is great and added some of the fallout roots in there as well. To bad the game is as bugy as it is because its pretty much going to knock it out of game of the year for most sites.
" Fallout 3 was a much more serious game, not really having fun with itself. "Fallout 3's story was hardly serious. Yes, it tried, but the story was like a 12 year old writing fan fiction of Fallout. Fallout 3 just tried way too hard in every aspect. "Oh no, they killed my dad! Oh no, a plot twist (Anyone who isn't dumb could see where the plot twist was headed right after it happened)! Holy crap, that kid said the F word at me! This game is sooo grim!"
" @RsistncE said:Actually it sounds more like you might be ignoring the extra..."appendage"" "Technical issues aside..." Isn't this like saying, "Man, my wife may have 3 tits, a dick and 4 eyes, but damn is she a good ride!" "Sounds like she'd be even better for it. "
This guy has a great semi-review of the game, it was originally in French, so keep that in mind, this is a translation.

" @RsistncE said:Yes, I also might be able to overlook said extra appendage for the third titay." "Technical issues aside..." Isn't this like saying, "Man, my wife may have 3 tits, a dick and 4 eyes, but damn is she a good ride!" "Ok....but it's still a woman right? I'm in. "
But seriously, I'm 100% positive that I'll gladly be able to overlook the bugs, glitches and lock-ups for another couple of romps through the wasteland. From what I've played so far, I believe that even more. I've even had one lockup, and only wanted to get back into it, even more.
" @RsistncE said:And honestly, I haven't hit anything terrible yet. Had to restart my console once and not use a weapon add-on that was bugging out, but otherwise I haven't seen too much other than some brief frame rate issues (like a second, no more), and some dumb AI. Load times have still been decent to me. I want to know if Jeff installed the game to the console when he played, and if he did/didn't may have affected his load times." "Technical issues aside..." Isn't this like saying, "Man, my wife may have 3 tits, a dick and 4 eyes, but damn is she a good ride!" "Sounds like she'd be even better for it. "
It all boils down to how much you really love fallout, i've had the game lock up on me three times and had to manually restart my console but dammit do i love me some fallout
" @HandsomeDead said:me too. Always felt that a post-apocalyptic world should be messed up, sinister, selfish, dark, and gloomy. That's what F3 nailed on. I still have yet to try new vegas, given its buggy state, but i'm interested to seeing what humor they can have." Am I the only one who enjoyed the grim change of pace in Fallout 3? "I liked it. "
good news. i'll definitely pick up the game when the DLC comes out and some of the bugs are worked out.
It had a giant robot called Liberty Prime that shot laser beams out of its eyes and spouted anti-communist propaganda. Talking trees, drugged up sequences where the world turns upside down, alien spaceships, dozens, if not hundreds of pop culture references and little jokey things to find all over the map, hilarious characters to meet, and auto-axes 0_0 how the fuck did it take itself too seriously? GTFO.
Fallout 3 was a much more serious game, not really having fun with itself, that's not to say it was a bad game, it was a excellent game, but it didn't feel like a Fallout game. I totally agree. "
For me, the difference isn't between serious and not serious. There's definitely a mix of both in each game. What I like about New Vegas is that it seems a lot less linear than Fallout 3. In Fallout 3, you could be good or evil, but the actual story played out pretty much exactly the same way no matter what you chose. In New Vegas, I feel like my choices have a huge impact on the overall plot. I've already had a couple of instances where I had to stop and take a break from the game while I tried to decide the best way to resolve a situation. It definitely has that Dragon Age thing going on where you're constantly making difficult, but very meaningful choices about how to proceed.
" They're flipping out about this game over at Duck and Cover."I tend to avoid DAC and NMA, mainly, for FO3 and NV stuff. They have a sworn and open hatred for all things Bethesda/Obsidian. It's almost pathological.
Other than that, yes, I agree. The few things I've seen about FNV are shouting FALLOUT. I loved FO3, though. I S-Ranked it and enjoyed every minute of it.
