I have experienced no problems after the latest patch. I got all the achievements before this latest patch, and logged over 160 hours on the game, woefully broken with all the annoying bugs, save corruptions and crashes. Since the patch, I started a new character and I'm trying to finish a few more quests in anticipation for the new DLC. It goes without saying that it's a notably better experience, this game is just fantastic. It's a damn shame they didn't push the release date back to actually finish and test this game properly. I suspect it would have gotten more nominations and accolades, it's by far my favorite game of the year. Anyone else feel like this was the Best Game of the Year but Bethesda just threw it all away due to ill-planning and short-sighted greed?
Fallout: New Vegas
Game » consists of 25 releases. Released Oct 19, 2010
The post-apocalyptic Fallout universe expands into Nevada in this new title in the franchise. As a courier once left for dead by a mysterious man in a striped suit, the player must now set out to find their assailant and uncover the secrets of the enigmatic ruler of New Vegas.
The Game of the Year that should have been?
Companies are companies. They don't give a shit about awards, just earnings reports and meeting their quotas.
I experienced 2 save corruptions and gave up. They don't deserve any positive recognition after releasing such a train wreck of a game.
" @BaneFireLord said:Don't get me wrong; Bethesda is my favorite company. But if you, as a CEO, were to choose between +12 Rep Points or saving potential millions by meeting a deadline, which would you choose?" Companies are companies. It's definitely an awesome game, bugs & all. I wasn't
sure they could top Fallout 3, but by golly, they did it!
I've also had a hell of a lot more laughs in this release.
And I love how they blended in the original Fallout 1/2
soundtracks into the game.
" I really didn't like it and don't think it's worthy of any GOTY attention. "
What's not to like? Gambling, doing lot's of drugs, bangin'
hookers, & killing anybody that gets in your way. Turn people to
ash, or watch their heads cut off, & screw people over, all sung
to the tune of Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, or Dean Martin.
Ain't that a kick in the head? hahah.
Yeah I hear ya tc. It still has some bugs and glitches, but it's not too much in terms of taking away from the awesome overall experience. Obsidian deserves kudos imo. I've played about 20 hrs in the past few days, and I like it much better than FO3, and I really appreciated that game in the end. I can't quantify what it is right now...maybe the new location, or the overall atmosphere, or the color palette(which is much better imo), but it is more engaging and more addictive than Fallout 3. My experience is all post big/recent patch to be clear. I waited on purpose..other games had my attention anyway.
Weapon upgrades w/new attachments, and the ability to craft ammo and make important supplies, may be some of what makes the game more fun for me(there's never too many rpg layers for me). More companions to be recruited, and the command wheel for them is pure win. But I think it's all the faction choices and the fact that you can opt to really add hope to the world or be a supporter of the insane, lol, that makes it more motivating. Moral choices must be made often and are at every turn in the game, that's for sure. Can't say GOTY yet, and I kinda doubt I ever will, but it's certainly a treat I was doubtful about...but no longer! :).
I stopped playing after my save got corrupted, even though my other saves aren't too far off from where I was. There's too much that's taking me out of the game for me to enjoy it. Bad pacing doesn't help either.
It would've been one of my favorite GOTY contendors if I haven't experienced four save corruptions. Which is a shame, because this game was better in Fallout 3 in almost every category. Except for storytelling, which Fallout 3 trumps over New Vegas.
What save corruptions? I save constantly & haven't noticed a
single corruption with saves in my 96+ hours of play.
Nah. Glitches aside, I found the endgame really underwhelming after realizing its basically the exact same mission no matter who you align with. Take the bugs out and its a solid game, sure. Best game Obsidian's made since they started calling themselves Obsidian, probably. Best Fallout game probably.
I love Bethesda games. I can't keep track of the hours I spent in Oblivion, Fallout 3, and New Vegas seeing, collecting, and completing everything.
That said, if New Vegas hadn't arrived broken, then yeah, it still wouldn't be my game of the year but it would do a lot better than it will.
Still, considering how huge that game is, someone will always find something wrong with it, but that's still not an excuse for some of it's more obvious problems.
I played New Vegas, then immediately went back and replayed ALL of Fallout 3, then played ALL of New Vegas again.
I still think Fallout 3 is worlds above New Vegas. Even beyond technical issues, New Vegas's story felt broken to me both times, even though I played it two different ways. Sure, FO3 wasn't nearly as ambitious with choices, but when you made a big one, you immediately felt the impact and that was that. Vegas's story has potential, but between House, the Legion, the NCR, the strip, the Brotherhood of Steel, etc., there is literally NO way to have everything line up and make sense. Plus, with so many choices I felt like there was no way to actually be satisfied with the way it turns out.
Yeah, I get it, you need to make sacrifices. But if I'm on good terms with Mr. House and the Brotherhood, and neither has any reason to kill each other, and I have FULL speech and charisma, why do I need to annihilate the hidden valley base again? If I fight my way through ALL of the fort and somehow manage to kill Caesar, how come all I get are a few throwaway lines from certain characters and no other changes? If you want tons of choices, awesome, but you need to make it so that they all actually WORK in order for it to be satisfying at the end.
Bah, /rant. I'm just so disappointed that this game couldn't surpass the semi-broken-but-still-awesomeness that was Fallout 3.
" Companies are companies. They don't give a shit about awards, just earnings reports and meeting their quotas. "Seems to me that more awards would lead to more earnings.
" I experienced 2 save corruptions and gave up. They don't deserve any positive recognition after releasing such a train wreck of a game. "Exactly. I've never played the game, but to give this game an award for being released completely broken is to reward horrible game development, bad habits, and to insult all the developers out there who try to do things the right way. If anyone gives the award to New Vegas, I hope they get shut down.
No, even if there were no bugs. I love fallout, I've played 1 and 2, over 100 hours of 3, approaching 80 in NV, but there are far better games this year.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, most likely: Obsidian really needs to become a development house that comes up with design documents and then sells them for top dollar to people who can fucking code.
" @BaneFireLord said:And you probably thought the Wii was a fad. No offense, we don't anything. And thank god these wankfest awards don't actually matter." Companies are companies. Why is that? And you probably thought the Wii was a fad.
Uh, what? You don't anything? No offense, we don't anything.
You don't make sense!
I just had a stroke online. You should be more sensitive. I'm saying the kind of people who come to a site like this don't really know why some bad games sell and good games flop. And also, your game doesn't have to actually win Game of the Year to get a Game of the Year edition. So awards don't really matter. I've never seen a reprint of a game that included Spike TV's award on the cover to increase sales. People don't care.

I understand a lot of the animosity toward the game by people who had technical problems (I didn't have any that were significant, and have probably put eighty hours into the game). Beyond that, though, the game seemed to me to have a more interesting story, a lot more to do, more interesting companions, etc. The crafting system was a nice step forward. It certainly isn't a revolutionary game, but it was certainly solid from a gameplay perspective. So while I can understand someone saying it didn't suit them, I have a difficult time understanding the active dislike.
" @HandsomeDevil said:The game just wasn't compelling at all. I felt the story was worse, and overall the game just added stuff without addressing problems that Fallout 3 had. I don't care about companions. I don't care about crafting. I care about a game not being broke. I care about decent controls. These types of issues could be ignored with Fallout 3 because there were so many interesting quests and stories in that world that were just absent in New Vegas. The companion and crafting stuff felt totally tacked on and I had zero interest in any of it." @Lind_L_Taylor said:Could you be more specific? Also, New Vegas itself is a huge bummer. It's like 4 tiny little places instead of one big place that should act as the centerpiece for the wasteland like the DC Ruins in 3. The whole thing just felt.. cold. There was no soul. Nothing "personal" about it. If anything, there was less to do. Even though there were only a few major civilizations in 3, the world at least felt populated and there was enough to do in it. New Vegas just felt empty.

It felt like an improvement over 3 in some ways (especially in the writing department), but it didn't feel anywhere near as charming and captivating as the first 2 games. Nonetheless I really liked it and I think it took a step in the right direction. (I really liked Fallout 3 too)" @TheSeductiveMoose: Well, what did you think of New Vegas? "
I haven't really heard anyone complain about the controls. What issues were you having?
" @HandsomeDevil: Four small places? Surrounded by a half dozen others, including a rather large underground section much like the DC metro system. And a lot of places to go inside of. The DC ruins weren't much larger. If you only think of the city area as the main casino areas, yeah, it's small. But the casinos themselves were large. And there were tons of interesting sidequests in New Vegas. Dozens of them. I have no illusions about changing your mind about this, but I have a difficult time understanding this complaint with all the sidequests New Vegas offers. Fallout 3 seemed to me far more devoid of population than New Vegas. It's like we're playing two separate games. I really can't understand this. It's too bad. I haven't really heard anyone complain about the controls. What issues were you having? "I have to agree with you. His gripe sounds like serious hair-splitting to me.
The game plays exactly like Fallout 3, so I can't understand why someone
would bitch about the controls of this game if they liked the last game. The
game is large. I have no idea what he's talking about. If you don't fast travel,
it still takes a long time to get from point A to B. Plus their may be expansions
added that take it off map like they did for Fallout 3 in the future. I wonder how
much time the new DLC adds, I'm guessing a good 4-8 hours, almost half the
time or more to some major $60 released games.
There is probably 100+ hours of game play in New Vegas, so even if you feel
the map is small, there is a lot to do! New Vegas reminded me more of the
original Fallout 1-2 games than Fallout 3 did. And the major storyline is pretty
creative. The hardcore mode is also a pretty good option to have that Fallout
3 doesn't have. For any future Fallout games, I'm going to start with hardcore
from now on (assuming they keep it in future games).
Yeah it would be higher on my list, especially after revisiting it. But then again my major experience with Fallout NV was a game that slowed down and died after 2+ hours of continuous play, and that sucked big time. I do think some of the storyline and side-quests are better than Fallout 3 but the world of Fallout 3 was just so much better and felt so much more desperate than the Mojave. I guess I prefer an artificial wasteland over a natural one.
It's truly a bummer what happened to this game during development.
I didn't experience any bugs pre-patch, aside from slow loading and frame rate drops over long sessions. Post-patch, I can't get Arcade to join my party anymore (dialogue option will only appear when I already have another companion, asking other companion to wait at the Lucky 38 cause the "join me" option to disappear from my dialogue tree when talking to Arcade).
It's still a cool game though.
While the bugs did detract, the sameness and the continuing limitations of Gamebryo kept this from being on my Top Ten list at all. I'm sure others liked it much more than I did but in a year when games like Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2 came out, a big, if well made, expansion to Fallout 3 isn't winning GOTY.
so Fallout new vegas got nothing this year. I think it is fair. why? because this game has so many problems. I just stopped playing, and uninstalled it long time ago. patch, patch.... it's like COD Blops. then is it working? NO. honestly, I hate fallout style graphic. very large open land maybe give you tons of chance to explore along with missions. but you can easily lose a track. I don't really like this type of game even I like RPG. mass effect is so much better (maybe 1000 times). I won't buy any Betheda piece of shit for the future.
I've been sorta busy for the past week, and haven't checked the thread, wow, definitely got some thoughts & oppinions!
Everyone is entitled to their own oppinon, but, you can't deny the quality of the art design and writing of this game. I think anyone who argues otherwise has probably not actually played it, or got so frustrated with the bugs they quit playing....which i do understand, I had 1 save corruption and it severely pissed me off. BUT...I kept going, the story and writing was strong enough for me to continue to be interested. The art design is simply incredible, not just the graphics, but the setting, the visuals, music, the voice acting and sounds, everything just comes together in a truly remarkable aesthetic vsion. I also disagree that this is "DLC of Fallout 3," it's a massive new location, with entirely new characters and stories. The setting and factions make it feel like a different game in a lot of ways, new mechanics, and additional features, your characters motivations are really quite different. Like Fallout 3, it balances RPG, action, FPS and strategy game qualities very nicely.
Again, it is without a doubt, my favorite game of the year regardless of the bugs. i don't think any other game exceeds the innovaton, art design or writing of Fallout: New Vegas.
" I experienced 2 save corruptions and gave up. They don't deserve any positive recognition after releasing such a train wreck of a game. "This. 25 hours in. I also didn't find the game anywhere near as good Fallout 3, mostly due to balancing. It just doesn't feel like the world is that populated...
I haven't played New Vegas yet, and I don't know if I want to, because I've been hearing about how buggy it is, and this is coming from someone who played the Game of the Year Edition of Fallout 3, and didn't find a single bug in it.
New Vegas does sound like a great game, though. I'm just not sure right now.
For what it's worth I've played the game for almost another 60 hours since the latest patch and I've experienced no problems. I finished the DLC too, no problems." you even bother to install it or play it to begin with?? It
captured perfectly a ruined, nuked out world IMO & I'll
happily keep buying Bethesda. I can't wait to try their
next new game coming out late next year.
" @Lind_L_Taylor: Hmm... I might give New Vegas another shot. I remember the Ghouls going to space quest which was pretty cool. Maybe I was a tad harsh on NV. "I just finished my first round through the game. Took me 99 hours &
I haven't done every quest or the DLC yet. I've started a new game
in hardcore mode. However, I have about 5 new unplayed games
that need my attention, as well as my backlog to wade through &
then I'll be getting back to New Vegas. I'm hoping it won't take too
long. Probably try to play through a few of the new games this
week & then get back to NV on subsequent weekends.
