If only there were trees to cut!
I like the idea of only using one gun though. In FO3 I was going to do a run through with only the chinese pistol that lights people on fire and a sniper rifle, but never got around to it. I might in Hardcore now that ammo has weight, so i don't need to carry the ammo i don't use.

I think I will give it a try, normally playing games where the difficulty is ramped up bores me becuase it takes away the realism from the gameplay. If the only way to get past a certain point is to find a glitch in the A.I or attack something in a way which would just be ridicuous in reality its not for me. However my whole attraction to Fallout  is the idea of trying to survive in a post-apolcalyptic world and the harcore mode sounds as if it might be trying to replicate this sort of experience more realistically, rather than making all the enemies take hundreds of bullets before they die. It always annoys me in these games when you can fit half a lorry load of gear into your pack and when you never really have to eat or sleep.
I would like it if the longer you went with-out sleeping the more difficult it became to control your character and they became worse and shooting etc, tbh I would really like someone to make a Videogame of Cormac McCarthy's  book "The Road." I know it wouldn't be for everybody, but I like the idea of struggling to survive, kind of like you were in F3 after you came out of the vault - that was the most exciting time of the game for me.

As long as things don't lose their durability faster I will. I hated how a gun would break after 20 minutes of use. I want realistic, not annoying/frustrating/contrived hardness.

Hell no, I play Fallout 3 on easy just because it doesn't feel right on other modes, not because of it actual being difficult but because I can't stand to see a guy take 3 shotgun shells to the face and not die.

A human should take human like damage and go from scale from there with other creatures, imo.

I'd play NV on Hardcore because I like the realistic experiences of ammo weight, having to drink, and all that shinaz you have to worry about. I played FO3 on easy because unloading a magazine of bullets into a guys face for a full 12 seconds and them not dying is super annoying. I can deal with Super Mutants being resistance because, well, they aren't human. If Hardcore mode means unrealistically strong enemies, I'll play normal on easy mode. If it doesn't have anything to do with game difficulty, I'll play hardcore.

No. One of the things I liked about Fallout 3 was how easy it was to exploit the game. With the finding-more-ammo perk (I forget it's name), and the fact that ammo had no weight, I was able to build up a fortune of caps by looting and selling all sorts of ammo for weapons that I never used. For example, I almost never used mini-nukes, and you can get 200-something caps for one of those! And they had no weight!

That, and I play games to have fun. I don't think that dying because of having no water is fun. Unless it can be turned on or off at will (like difficulties in Fallout 3), I won't be doing this.

Sounds a bit too tough for me, besides I'm not sure I want to deal with all that scavenging for water, extra inventory management and waiting for my health to heal.

    Definitely.

Besides, according to Gameinformer, Hardcore mode is NOT a difficulty level, it's a modifier.  So you can play on Easy, which has experience, enemy/player health etc where they would be with an easy mode, but Hardcore adds those extra effects.  So it's not going to be affecting the "meters" too much, it just won't hold your hand.

I wonder, if the aim of hardcore mode is to make the game more realistic, does this do away with the whole "dice rolling" system of shooting? It would be really interesting to have your gun's accuracy be solely dependent on its condition, not how many points you put into a skill. Also, it'd be really neat to have guns backfire when the reach 0% condition, rather than just becoming unusable.

I'll definitely play hardcore for my first time through. I recently started playing Fallout 3 again and I installed a mod called FWE which makes you have to monitor your hunger, thirst and tiredness, makes combat more difficult, etc. It almost turns it into a survival horror game what with the distinct lack of ammo/Stimpacks and having to run a lot. I realize that may sound like the opposite of fun, but it really adds to the atmosphere for me. I thought FO3 was sort of so-so when it was released, but with this mod on it makes it a lot more fun. I'm hoping with New Vegas playing in hardcore mode off the bat will make me appreciate the setting a lot more.

If it takes half your ammo to kill anything while a couple shots are fatal to the player, then hell no. Realism I can appreciate but mind-numbingly impossible grind fests ain't my bag.

I think the Hardcore setting will probably make the game more balanced. In Fallout 3 ammunition essentially became a second currency that was much more easy to come by than bottlecaps.

Depends on how tacked on it feels.  While the idea of some of the things in hardcore is good to me, just taking the exact formula and feel of Fallout 3 and adding those things would probably just make it feel awkward.  Making a (relatively) shallow game deeper isn't as simple as just adding in elements that typically constitute or accompany depth.  The whole game has to be built around those elements (or rather, built to accomodate them), or they just feel tacked on.

Of course, hard core is essentially marketed to be FO3 with the fwe mods, which turned it into a much, much better game.
I'm actually looking forward to this mode, and hope that the trend in realism continues!

Depends on how many bullets it will take to kill something, dying easily I can deal with and enjoy the challenge, always loved RPGs that require food+ water managment... but if you're dying because an enemy takes 20 shots to the head, that's not fun and I might wait for a second playthrough.
