To this day, I don't understand why people hate FF 9. The setting, premise, characters, gameplay and even the music (Melodies of Life)  is what makes this game awesome. 
 
I understand why people like other FF games but I rarely hear someone saying this was their favourite.

I wish I could enjoy FFXII in peace without rabid fangirls squealing about how Fran and Balthier make such a great furry couple.
 
Sometimes liking a game thats hated makes it all the more special to you.

FFIX is in fact, my favorite game of all times. No hate here.

This was simply the VII effect where most Playstation era players were introduced to it with that iteration. When IX came around and brought the series to a similar style to the previous games I through VI there was a lot of hate. For those who had played more of I through VI it was liked a lot with the retro style done in the modern PSOne engine.

I don't think FF9 is hated.  I disliked it and never finished it, but I always seem to be the odd man out when it comes to people's opinion about the game.

FF IX is my favourite Final Fantasy game ever. It's a fantastic game. And I hardly ever see people hate on it. Sure, people generally favour VII to it, but that's just the nostalgia factor. VII introduced a tonne of people to the JRPG genre, so they're going to have fond memories of it. When you actually revisit them, IX is the far superior game.

Same. It's my favorite Final Fantasy, also my first. It's just always been more fun to play than the others I've tried.

Because Dagger is probably one of the dumbest default names in JRPG history.
 
That said, I loved the game.  Not as much as VI, but I still loved it.

There seem to be two camps of people: people who like VIII and people who like IX. They rarely crossover, because while VIII was a mature, darker story with human looking characters and a highly deep and sophisticated combat system. IX, however, seemed to be a kiddy game in comparison. Look at a character comparison. 

FFIX is the best final fantasy ever made. I like 10 ok, and I hated VIII, but the other Final Fantasy's have never interested me as IX did.

Favorite of the series.

9 was my first Final Fantasy.  It was the second/third game I got for my PS2(I didn't have a PS1).  As for my favorite final fantasy, that would be contested between 4,6,and 9.  I liked 1,2,5,7,8 and10.  I never played 3 and I believe 10 was the last good final fantasy game.

I think that the art style can throw people off. Plus, coming off of two -ish (6 could count) Final Fantasys that were a bit more cyberpunk (I'm sure I'll get grief for suggesting 8 was cyberpunk but it's in there somewhere) and going back to a more traditional knights/crystals/ fantasy steampunk thing, it probably threw people.
 
I've actually been waiting for it on PSN so I can finally play it through and beat it. I sunk 20 hours into it years ago before my memory card took a shit and I lost my saves.

It came out after 8 and didn't look like 8, but a less Popeye-ish version of 7.

I really need to finish a Final Fantasy game. I almost did with VIII, but I got bored with it.

What's the "best" is truly subjective and Final Fantasy I is far from my favorite. It's a good game but dated compared to the standards it set forth years after it's release, I'd take it over Final Fantasy VIII and XIII any day though. "

I adore FFIX. It was the first game I played on a PS1, and it comes in a very close second to VI as my favorite Final Fantasy.
