To this day, I don't understand why people hate FF 9. The setting, premise, characters, gameplay and even the music (Melodies of Life) is what makes this game awesome.
I understand why people like other FF games but I rarely hear someone saying this was their favourite.

Why all the hate?
" @The_Dude said:You mean since ever." I don't think theres really been a GREAT FF game since 6. "you mean since 1 "
This was simply the VII effect where most Playstation era players were introduced to it with that iteration. When IX came around and brought the series to a similar style to the previous games I through VI there was a lot of hate. For those who had played more of I through VI it was liked a lot with the retro style done in the modern PSOne engine.
I don't think FF9 is hated. I disliked it and never finished it, but I always seem to be the odd man out when it comes to people's opinion about the game.
FF IX is my favourite Final Fantasy game ever. It's a fantastic game. And I hardly ever see people hate on it. Sure, people generally favour VII to it, but that's just the nostalgia factor. VII introduced a tonne of people to the JRPG genre, so they're going to have fond memories of it. When you actually revisit them, IX is the far superior game.

"I think FF IX didn't get more attention because of being released near the launch of PS2 and people dismissing it. What I like about this game is that the storyline and characters are connected to each other and taking back to the original FF storyline. Also the characters feel more lovable than the previous two and I was more detached to them in their journey than the other two games.
There seem to be two camps of people: people who like VIII and people who like IX. They rarely crossover, because while VIII was a mature, darker story with human looking characters and a highly deep and sophisticated combat system. IX, however, seemed to be a kiddy game in comparison. Look at a character comparison.
Couple that with the fact that IX has a much more simplified battle system and whatnot and people could easily see it as a step backwards and hate it. Those who decided to stick with it love it quite a bit, though.
FFIX is the best final fantasy ever made. I like 10 ok, and I hated VIII, but the other Final Fantasy's have never interested me as IX did.
I think that the art style can throw people off. Plus, coming off of two -ish (6 could count) Final Fantasys that were a bit more cyberpunk (I'm sure I'll get grief for suggesting 8 was cyberpunk but it's in there somewhere) and going back to a more traditional knights/crystals/ fantasy steampunk thing, it probably threw people.
I've actually been waiting for it on PSN so I can finally play it through and beat it. I sunk 20 hours into it years ago before my memory card took a shit and I lost my saves.
maybe in japanese dagger doesn't sound so harsh and blunt but to me it has the ring of word such as 'table', there is no poetic nuance that alludes to some comment on a female character with the name of a deadly weapon. Just the name 'table'...... or 'dagger' as the case may be.
I really liked FF9 though probably my favourite in the series. Was filled with a world to explore and side quests to get distracted by with plenty for you to see off the trodden trail all the things i appreciate in an RPG.
On Topic:
Final Fantasy IX receives hate because it isn't as emo or as angsty as VII and VIII were, it was a throw back to the old-school Final Fantasy games and I loved it. It's my favorite Final Fantasy for the Playstation, I liked VII and all, but IX was much better in my opinion. My favorite in the series still remains Final Fantasy VI however.

It was also the first FF I ever played. A friend had it as well as 8 and 7 at the time, but 9 was the one I stuck with. After playing through half the game and quitting it, I still came back a few years later and restarted it, this time playing all the way through.
I've finished the FF3 & 4 DS remakes, played half of 8 and some of 7. To the near-ending of 10 and many hours of 12, haven't unwrapped 13 yet.
9 is to this day the one mayor, non-remake final fantasy game that I've ever finished.
Now that I think about it Zidane is probably my favorite FF protagonist as well.
