Has anyone already purchased this re-release? Is it a standalone .exe, or is there a SquareEnix launcher, GFWL, etc?

Out of nowhere! Might be something I can afford today.
The PEGI (UK age rating guys) listed it as coming out today, so we actually did know about this.
Personally, I'm not so interested in playing through it again. I think it still holds up very well, but they really could have done something to the music, translation and graphics.
Here are the specs for FFVII for PC in case you were wondering:
The most talked about RPG (role-playing game) is coming out on the PC this summer.
What else can it be but the epic adventure FINAL FANTASY VII???

Demos to be released soon

Is it worth it? I hear so much about the damn game, but never found a way to give it a try. I don't want to play the polygonal mess, (looks fantastic in 1998) but would love to give it a try if it's somewhat up-scaled.
This whole thing just seems so weird.
According to the site linked in the OP, the only new features are achievements, cloud saves and a character booster (WTF?). Quote: "Find yourself stuck on a difficult section or lacking the funds to buy that vital Phoenix Down? With the Character Booster you can increase your HP, MP and Gil levels to their maximum, all with the simple click of a button, leaving you to enjoy your adventure."
They don't mention any improved graphics or new content. As a huge fan of FF7, I call shenanigans on this, I don't wanna pay for a character cheat. There already was a pc version, fuck this greedy square enix.
It's finally out?! Well, guess I must have had a review copy for over a decade!
All jokes aside; I hope it is a good port and I am happy that it has been released officially again on PC to make sure that everyone on current systems can play it again. Hopefully the worst that will come out of this is that it will be there so that those who want more games like it can buy it to show they support and that they would play traditional games like it again (or that they think the SE should continue to work with the people who helped make it - like what I intend to get across when I buy video game soundtracks; that there is the tiniest possibility that the sales will get noticed and they continue to make music with them).
@Xymox: Yep seems like it. There's probably plenty of people who want to experience the story.. Still, without the hard work of leveling your characters and materia, the story probably won't mean as much. I wouldn't personally recommend a RL friend to play through it with cheats, even if they were in it just for the story.
Also, lol at the quote & pic! D:
So I picked it up and right away just trying to download the installer when ESET NOD32 started flagging up that FINALFANTASYVII-dm.exe is a variant of Win32/Adware.Trymedia.A.
So Square's EU store is using an adware distributer for the installer. I keep my system clean, I am not going to start up this executable.
I also read varying reports about what type of SecuROM gets installed, and whether it includes a rootkit. Some people seem to indicate no problems, some have said that they have found SecuROM registry keys, that it stops AdAware from booting properly, that they cannot properly uninstall the game and that that they are getting hardware removal sounds appearing randomly for no reason.
I value the integrity of my PC higher than the opportunity to play this game legitimately, so it looks like I am not going to be replaying FFVII PC any time soon. I might contact Square about the potentially uwanted program in the installer, if I get time.

For sure. I used to be able to cheat my way through games just fine but these days I feel no sense of accomplishment at all from it, even to the point where I just become bored with it. Rather just play on easy when I want to get through something just to see what the fuss was about/get the story. As silly as it sounds, that removing challenge would somehow damage the delivery of the story, I would have to agree. But hey, the option's there now for those who want it, I guess.
The online features include great spyware software that will report your every click to George Bush.
I'd rather just play it on my PSP.
If they would have given this one a full graphical makeover, a number of anime-styled cutscenes for story segments, and a much better translation (and excluded the spyware), I would buy it. I like the old version, despite it looking like crap, but I don't want to buy a bare-bones rerelease.
You can do better, Square. You can do much better.
http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=13212.msg183581#msg183581 Mods for yo' FFVII ranging from Everything to Everything! :D Just note that these mods and the modding tool was released for the FIRST PC launch of the game so i have no idea if these mods will work.
No Steam, no sale. I don't like my PC digital releases to be loose across game or publisher specific services.
Achievements and cloud saves? Is this some Square Enix proprietary bullshit that will go offline in a year? No mention of Steam or GFWL.
@TheHBK: You must not have learned how to do a quick Google search in the past 26 years either.
I own the original copy that I can boot up and just play it so yeah..I want to pay for it again...download it..install it..configure it... FUCK NO!
The music is the original midi stuff, but saved as .ogg files. So, I'm replacing as many of those files with other versions as I can. A pretty monstrous task, since the .ogg files names are mostly cryptic, with no clue to what the song actually is. Plus the whole converting real songs to .ogg thing.
So these new achievements don't actually connect to any meaningful account, right? (Even how rubbish as they are, I wouldn't mind playing through FFVII again and "get" something in return). So I might as well just wait for the eventual steam release, considering that is where the leak of a new PC release came from I presume it will come out on there. If not, no massive loss I suppose.

Did they bother to put in a proper soundtrack or is it still the pathetic MIDI-Files?
You watch your tongue! None of the orchestrated versions hold a candle to the midi versions as far as mood goes. The sounds are all perfect, despite being very much a product of their time, but why would anyone want it any other way? It would just be a bigass anachronism stew if all the haters had their way. Let the original version remain as is and just keep hoping for a remake with modern art assets, sounds, etc in the mean time.
