This is what I'm talkin about. This game looks like it's pushing the genre's limits. Screw all these lame RPGs that have released lately. Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery, and Lost Odyssey look like SNES games compared to this. Yes. Fucking YES. Can't wait.

Ogle The Final Fantasy XIII Trailer, Repeatedly
NOBODY LIKES COMBAT BARS, Honestly, the reason why there are soo many 1st person shooters and platformers is because most people don't want to juggle 5 characters at once, taking turns. Otherwise, if the game was 1st or 3rd person, I can see why people would dig it, but until then, pass.
Looks like there's sort of a mix between the Gambit system from FFXII and some twitch-based actions in combat. Maybe you'll plan out a series of attacks based on action points (or something), then basically follow QTEs to do complete or extra your combos.
Oddly, from some of the way the characters were moving, it looks like combat is once again based on "good guys stand on the left, baddies on the right," as opposed to being seamless like FFXII. Sure, sure, simply speculation based on 10 seconds of footage, but I quickly saw the way that the characters dash around, and how that the enemies were grouped, or in one case lined up like a battle line....could be totally different.
Like my mom's way of saying no..."we'll see."
"Looks like there's sort of a mix between the Gambit system from FFXII aThat gambit system, where did you see that? I personally love the gambit system, even if it's simply a ripped off renamed version of Baldur's Gate II custom AI scripts. It's far better than what JRPGs usually let you do.
FF12 IMO had brilliant gameplay and awesome graphics, but the game got real boring due to horrible characters like Vaan dragging the story down w/ his gay jpop antics.
Here are my speculations on it.
-The Xbox360 version is going to be inferior graphically because Square Enix are addicted to Sony.
-The game always looks good but playing it is a different matter (The latter has gone down the tubes because Square Soft and Enix merged).
-It will gain critical acclaim however fans are going to look at and say "Yeah, it is not as good as I thought it would be".
-The combat will lack depth compared to its predecessors.
-We finally realize First Person shooters are becoming generic.
Wow no idea what the hell the characters are on about and I still refuse to tuch this game it's got fan boy witting all over it.
I may as well get a CGI hollywood film play it then stop it get a chess bored out and move a piece then play film etc.
I'm drinking Barq's root beer--Mmmm, yum--and I'm thinking that this could actually be a pretty good game. Might even get me into the whole J-RPG genre again, seeing as I haven't played one since FFX.
Why does everybody think this looks awesome, this makes me miss the hold FF games, this looks like over the top 3D anime bullshit : (
"Bucketdeth said:It's not 3D that has ruined FF, nor the anime (anime is a very generic term, Ghost in a shell is nothing like DBZ or Elfen LIed) it's this gay jpop nonsense and JPN devs designing all their chars to look like anorexic girly men cosplayers"Why does everybody think this looks awesome, this makes me miss the hold FF games, this looks like over the top 3D anime bullshit : ("Quotes for emphasis."
"Meowayne said:At least they just went with a female protagonist this time. The male characters revealed so far do not appear particularly girly nor anorexic. And Final Fantasy games have tried over the top action since as long as I can remember. It's just much easier to show now. It's cool to look at in a trailer, but it's just eye candy until put into context when actually playing the game. The important issues are whether these characters are actually interesting once you get to know them and if the story is compelling."Bucketdeth said:It's not 3D that has ruined FF, nor the anime (anime is a very generic term, Ghost in a shell is nothing like DBZ or Elfen LIed) it's this gay jpop nonsense and JPN devs designing all their chars to look like anorexic girly men cosplayers""Why does everybody think this looks awesome, this makes me miss the hold FF games, this looks like over the top 3D anime bullshit : ("Quotes for emphasis."
Honestly I wouldn't have minded having only Japanese voices in the game. It's mainly just me nitpicking here but I always had an issue where the voices don't sync very well with the mouth movements when dubbed in English, and more often than not the voices are terrible in comparison. Sure I can agree with the some of you that generally Japanese acting can sound like high pitch anime-based squeals from time to time but one thing is clear - they are clearly more passionate about portraying their characters in the right way more than english voice dubbers. There are exceptions to this at times but unfortunately they are in the minority.
Anyways happy to see the gameplay looking more involving and nice to know how far they evolve the genre from seeing both sides standing there until their time bars are full to something that makes the action more fluid.
I'm not super excited about FFXIII really, but that won't keep me from keeping my eye on it. One thing that I did notice was that horizontal line stretching all the way across the screen about 3/4 of the way down. It bothered me a little bit to see it always there in the combat screens, but I'm sure it serves some purpose? I guess if it separated the parts of the combat from the selections available it'd make more sense to me, but the combat clearly goes below the line. I guess I'm nitpicking at it.
Crazy fast action for sure though. And I agree - not knowing any of the backdrop information, names, parts to the story etc..I can't get into the dialogue. It's not meaningful to me right now.
Yeah, I think I'm pretty much done with Final Fantasy games. They are really awesome games, but I finally realized that these huge ass rpg's just aren't for me. Took me years to figure out as I own FF 8, 9, X, and 12, and never finished any of them. I just seriously hate level grinding, and the only Japanese rpg I ever managed to finish was Legend of the Dragoon. Which strangly is still one of my favorite games from when I was younger. Though it's more-than-one-button-press-combat system certainly helped with that. So yeah, I think I'll pass.
"Further proof that FF 'artists" don't actually design characters, they simply copy pop culture REAL LIFE people into their game, why is no one suing? If I were meg ryan or Wrath of Khan I would have suedI don't think they look alike at all.
"
Really? Lol well I highly doubt Square Enix is using famous people for their games. Her style is a very common one anyway. Glossy lips, pig tails, hair color thats not black or brown, ear rings, very common in japan.
She was just modeling as the typical asian woman then the artists might have done some searching for fashion then tie it in to the games settings. Happens all the time, so no one's copying anyone, its just mere coincidence.

*shudders* A ginger Dakota Fanning.....
The graphics are pretty, the potential of some of the ideas are interesting...
And all the pretty little characters slaughter all the supposedly evil guys in their uniforms, everything moves faster than the eye can track, more goofy names for things that seem unpronounceable, visions of fighting for an extra hour so you can steal that one stupid item from that monster in order to complete your collection of baubles which you suspect may unlock a side quest which, if done in real time, would mean that the end of the world would have happened way before you returned to the main quest, and the monsters are likely the same mishmash of FF standbys like some sort of endless fan service no one asked for, with some new take on a combat system which ruins whatever verisimilitude swordz and gunz combat could possibly have.
At least, what was it, XII? That looked like it was taking things in an interesting direction. I'm sure this will sell well, and I'm sure it'll have some sort of weird plot that will make me realize that this property is a step above your standard RPG, but I don't think I can feel the excitement many people seem to have, not anymore.
Looking forward to the review whenever it comes :)
I've had more than a few, and I think this footage is mind-blowing. I cannot wait to play this. I've been waiting since 7 for them to return to scifi completely. I cannot wait. I hope the story's good, and I can already tell they've spruced up the old battle system, and made it more active again.
Can't wait!!!
I will repeat. This game looks Fing amazing.
LOL @ people talking about the combat system and controls....these same people will buy the game anyways....uggghhhh I wish gamers knew how business works.
The trailer was mostly the usual stuff. Fast action, random gunfights, more chases etc. But the in-game battle system footage was definitely the highlight of the trailer. It looks quite different than it did way back in E3 06. There is no mini-map at the bottom and it now resembles more to Crisis Core (battle-system-wise) which isn't a bad thing at all.
