These things pop up in the oddest places. They're ostensibly for protection, although most often in non-football games it's just for aesthetic reasons.

    Short summary describing this thing.

A football helmet is an article of protective equipment worn by football players during a game. It consists of a rigid skull cap and face mask, held on the head with a buckled chin strap. The skull cap has an outer shell that covers an array of shock-absorbing structures that protect the wearer's head from harmful impacts. The face shield is a broad wire grid that protects the wearer's jaw and teeth, but is still wide enough to allow the player to eat and drink without removing the helmet. Football helmets are usually decorated with the colors and logos of the team to which the player belongs.
