I guess them giving her the award says a lot about what they are thinking of. As far as a plot perspective I think John is far better and more complex and Bayonetta... they say there is more behind her than there appears but I don't really see what they are saying. She is powerful but it's not like I appreciated her character after I got to the end of the game and really empathized with her motivations." Bayonetta's character development is about as small as her hips are wide. "
I hadn't listened to the podcast til right now and it sounds like Jeff's implications that he is generic is what dragged them down. It's funny Vinny says Marston doesn't break molds and says Bayonetta does.... wtf? Am I missing something with Bayonetta? She is in a few ways the typical Japanese presented female character and the molds she breaks are in that she is absolutely crazy but to the point where it's just your watching this craziness on screen, not really feeling that she is a compelling character. I don't understand. Must just be a very different approach to the award than I would take. Not saying she isn't a fun character because she certainly is.
And Ryan, Vinny, and Jeff really miss the point of John, they think the game isn't about him from what they say. Like they say John doesn't have an arc to his character so he won't get the award for that... but Bayonetta does have an arc? WTF? John does have an arc: He is seeking redemption, he gets safety with his family, and then finally we see that he can never run from his past and that is the tragedy of the game.
And they say Francis York Morgan isn't a nonsensical character? And Bayonetta isn't? Ugh. RDR is completely about John and how the others affect him and his journey for redemption and the safety of his family. Listening to the assumptions on the podcast and their and takes on RDR really confused me but oh well. I still think John is by far the best character of this year and I think many feel the same way. So I'm just happy the RDR guys will get recognized for their work, which was unbelievable.
