ok guys, our queues got backed up, so I cleared them out. Also found a bug which we'll be fixing tomorrow, but unfortunately we lost 24 hours of notifications. I apologize for this issue and we'll continue to monitor to see what's going on.
@mrpibb: When you say your queues got backed up but they're cleared now, do you mean this issue has been addressed? Or is it something you're hoping to monitor and see what might be the root problem?
@truthtellah: we had one bad set of notifications block all other notifications for about 24 hours. We know what the root cause is, and unfortunately the current fix for it is to remove all the pending notifications. We'll be working on a fix tomorrow to make sure we don't block in the future as well as have better monitoring in place.

It's perhaps a small thing, but having exactly this kind of hiccup message in the site header, or as an official twitter feed announcement would sure go a long way to helping the thousands of users that don't hunt in the Bug forums. :) If there's one thing GB users appreciate, it's transparency.
The Visit the Store link area seems to serve a flexible purpose. Having a Known Service Issues link in the header (or footer) would go a long way to keeping users in the loop. Especially those of us that rely on site features like notifications. Fortunately I was able to catch several mentions in my friend feed over the last couple days, but I don't know what I missed. Nothing important certainly, but again, transparency. :)
I recall making the same suggestion years ago about having an alert box in the chat interface. Rather than needing a moderator to repeat continuously to three thousand people logging in to "adjust the volume slider to restore sound", wouldn't it be super handy if there was just a public announcement box? Little things mean a lot of efficiency.

@brackynews: Pretty sure we do have an announcement box that's been added to chat in the last couple of weeks.
That's not a bad idea re: the site header, though. We do try to use the official Twitter account to update people regarding site issues, but obviously that's imperfect.

The only "perfect" scenario for site alerts on twitter is of course, the site being down. I expect there's a small and infrequent category of things that are worth alerting the whole userbase about in the header.
I couldn't help but think what normally happens in an office environment when an email server eats a day's worth of incoming or outgoing mail. Knowing to take preemptive steps can be quite valuable, and an IT department has to presume everyone has communication of importance.
Anyway I think the notifications are a great new system. As much as I treasure my collection of wall post PMs, just having a svelt timeline of alerts that properly link to a forum message is a beautiful thing!
Same for me, no notifications at all. Help! I need to be able to respond to people I'm accidentally offending because I'm terrible at sarcasm on the internet.
It seems to stop working yet again. The notification system is corrupted, and pure evil. Its got a mind of its own man. People send me messages and I got no idea that they sent me, unless I just so happen to look at the thread.
I know it must be tough keeping the system up and in running, hopefully it gets fixed soon.

sorry guys, the issue has to deal w/ too many followers on some blogs backing up our system. We're putting a temporary fix in right now to get some additional processes working on the followers and putting a more permanent fix over the next 48 hours of more machines.
