Video player broke on mobile/tablets?

Recently got an iPad and am having issues with the video player? Specifically there are no controls. After starting the video I can only pause/unpause it. There are no options for full screen or quality. Is this just how the player works on mobile?

So when using chrome and hitting "request desktop site", it gives me the video player options.
