www.gamershake.com redirecting to Giant Bomb website content

Hey, folks! I hope this is the right subforum, please advise.

Was searching DuckDuckGo on #skate4 and came across something that I think you'd find interesting. There was a search result from a "www.gamershake.com" which, when navigated to, was basically a mirror of Giant Bomb, only with a different logo and all references to Giant Bomb altered, including the copyright disclaimer on the page footer. Is this some sort of sanctioned mirror site or Easter egg? Is this legal? I've got no idea, just wanted to make the staff aware of it. Pictures included below.

Man, these Gamershake guys are totally just copying Gamebomb.ru.

I mean, as much as I identify with the Gamer Shake brand, it just seemed too convenient. First time I actually noticed this sort of thing appear on a search (I think it was even in the top ten results -- but still, DuckDuckGo), so even if it's not the only fraud mirror I figure it was worth posting.

I'm pretty sure this is why edgework has had to clamp down on use of the API, because too many shady websites were using the API to constantly scrape the ENTIRE website, then basically repost all of it as their own website without giving credit.

What if giantbomb is a redirect from an entirely different website we don't know about. How deep does this go? Follow the money.

@bisonhero They're probably not hitting the API at all actually. This looks more like they put a proxy up doing a GiantBomb > Gamershake text replacement as the HTML comes through. In a way it's much much shadier than an API dump.

I know this kinda stuff is shady and dodgy but that's the funniest fucking thing I've seen in a while.

Oh man I hope Gamebomb.ru takes legal action, this is so wrong.

Not really clones but seems a bit weird and to similar.

Both website are about iphone apps about games that seem to use giantbombs api, the sites are veeery similar and both have two devs with their favorite games listed under their picture. The apps seem identical...

Stumbled over this old thread and figured I should try to find any new copies of the site. I used copyscape for this, you can try if you want, try to enter an article or a wiki page.

I've sent a copyright complaint to CloudFlare about this one (they have rehosted wiki pages I have written, so AFAICT I can legally complain about those). I'm a little surprised GB haven't noticed this one themselves - all the images appear to be hotlinked from static.giantbomb.com (hopefully this means gamebase haven't been getting much traffic)

@forcen: Received a reply from the dev. He's basically claiming that this is a valid use of the GB API (something I doubt as it is basically an uncredited rehost of most of the wiki/reviews content, and the terms of use are don't build a competing product/give credit where it is due). He even sent a image showing his API usage data (key blacked out).

I'll refrain from getting involved further (using the API probably means it's an issue between that site and GB, regardless of what rights I retain on the original wiki postings per the CBSi Ts and Cs), but @rorie (possibly @rick on the API side of things?) may want to give it a look. I can forward the response I received if it helps.

@rorie: I just got reminded of this thanks to all the plagiarism news and found out that the weird copy site origins-app DOT info is still up. Looks like they are using the API to get all the videos and stuff.

This isn't surprising but still its wild to see a site be so bold as to change just one thing and present the rest of it as their own. Wonder if they are also getting all that late night Korean spam.
