Do you prefer YOU DEFEATED or VICTORY ACHIEVED?

Never played Dark Souls, but judging from those two things out of context, Victory Achieved sounds like you accomplished something but You Defeated sounds like you just fucked someone or something up, so that one wins

There's something very Solaire about VICTORY ACHIEVED.

When Dark Souls originally released, it just said "YOU DEFEATED". It didn't say "YOU DEFEATED THE TAURUS DEMON", it just said "YOU DEFEATED" every time you won a boss fight. The PC release changed it to "VICTORY ACHIEVED".

Personally, I didn't even know about this until I had played some of the PC version and I'm a snob so I'm going with "VICTORY ACHIEVED". I just like it being correct and all.

They patched out You Defeated and replaced it with Victory Achieved. Then people complained and they changed in again if I recall correctly.

Anyone that says "Victory Achieved" is a terrible person, and should be struck down by the Darkmoon Blades.

In Demon's Souls it said "The Demon Was Destroyed"

The first time I beat the Taurus Demon, I was at very low health and we ended up hitting each other at the same time. I won, but I saw that "YOU DEFEATED" message for the first time and for a brief second I thought that it meant I died. After that, there was no going back...YD4L

From Software might have been embarrassed by it but I thought it gave it some unique flavour as serious as the game is. If you're on PC though you can always just mod it back in, like myself.

YOU DEFEATED is the obvious answer, although I always supplemented it with my own "Praise the Sun" pose upon defeating the boss.

VICTORY ACHIEVED actually makes sense in the English language so it obviously loses.

I could take either one, really. I'm not a big fan of YOU DEFEATED because I don't like broken English. VICTORY ACHIEVED isn't much better though.

That said, my favourite Dark Souls message is from a mod I saw that changed the on-screen messages in Dark Souls. The first time I saw "we handsome now" after reverse hollowing I lost my shit.

I would also take "YOU ARE VICTORIOUS" if it was an option. I feel like that's also in the spirit of the moment.

What they actually changed it back? That is amazing, someone confirm this is true.

I wish there was a voice over when the "You Defeated" victory text came up, other than that its is PERFECT.

I've been playing the PC version recently and not seeing "You Defeated" makes me sad.

I played the game first on 360, so when I saw "Victory Achieved" pop up in the PC version, it just felt wrong. "You Defeated" is just so much better.

I remember when they patched out "You Defeated" and put in "Victory Achieved". The vast majority of people were pretty upset by the change. It might have been done during the Fog Ring patch. I think they put it back in on the very next patch.

YOU DEFEATED will always be correct to me.

I've been playing the 360 version with the latest patches and it says You Defeated. Quick searching says it came back with the DLC patch.

For some reason, i feel that YOU DEFEATED has a better feeling of achievement. Also, its more awesome if you play the game with people and everyone cheered "YOU DEFEATED!!" instead of "Victory achieved!"

YOU DEFEATED is in the active voice, therefore it is correct.

You Defeated dont even make no sense.

@ilikepopcans: The Demon's Souls one was "The Demon Was Destroyed", with the subtext "You shall obtain the Demon Soul / And the power that is beyond human imagination". I really liked that subtext in all the Demon's Souls messages.

You defeated gives the game even more personality than it already had. Also the game telling me I defeated? You bet your ass I defeated. Does anyone know if the message was changed for Dark Souls 2? I really hope not.

@naru_joe93: See thats the spirit of Dark Souls. That game just constantly nags you. You fight your way to the boss over and over again. Then you enter the room and are slayed instantly. Nevermind, another try. Until you finally beat his bloody ass. Then what does this b**** of a game do? It applauds you with a message that doesn't even make sense. Thats Dark Souls.

I like YOU DEFEATED 'cause it's fundumb but if we're going for what sounds better then...well ok, none of it does. It took me a while to see this while trying to think of better replacements for the currently implemented Engrish sounding text, but announcing HUMANITY RESTORED, BONFIRE LIT, VICTORY ACHIEVED or YOU DIED is kinda goofy regardless of how you try to phrase it. Doh, better just embrace it.

They should just go full on Demon's Souls and have barely legible subtext that expands upon the line.

That's the sort of dumb bombast I want.

I'd prefer if when you died it said "A DEFEATED IS YOU" or something along those lines. "You Defeated" is such sublimely bad English that it kind of adds a special kind of flavor to Dark Souls, just like all the horrifically butchered scriptural English such as "Cometh soon" that makes my skin crawl.

YOU DEFEATED deserves to join the pantheon of the all-time great moments of broken English in video games. It's right up there with YOU'RE WINNER.
