Dark Souls 3 Character Creation: Hot or Not?

Following in the footsteps of Dark Souls 2 Character Creation: Hot or Not? and Bloodborne Character Creation: Hot or Not? we now get the third installment in the series as we struggle to make an attractive character. It was a lot more difficult to make an attractive female character, but after 2 or so hours I was finally able to get her looking DS3 decent.

Finally building my Guts build for a Souls game! Not entirely happy with the face, it's fine but it doesn't look as cool as Guts. I'll probably just play the game for now and wait until someone else to perfect the Guts face and just copy theirs later but I feel pretty good about this one. It's a shame they didn't add a blind eye feature (like what Dragon's Dogma did) but at least I can change individual pupil colours. Also no scars but thankfully there's a "slash wound" tattoo so it still works! Also that Merc armour is totally ripped from Guts' mercenary years (down to the left hand gauntlet and flowing red cape!). I'm never taking this armour off! Unless they actually have the Berserker armour..... One can only hope.

I used a combination of random slider moving and "Similar" spamming, with final touch-ups for the hair and eyes. I named him "Chin Love"

I've fiddled around with the editor for over an hour and this is the best I could do.

I really hate the beard (there's no real full beard? what the hell?) and hair options once again. Overall the editor seems okay, though.

@probablytuna: any chance you could post the formula for your face? I'd like to make my dude look like a badass as well, but I'm gunna age him

@basm321: I was planning to make him a bit older as well, but I've found that changing from Young to Mature just meant adding wrinkles so I just kept him young. Anyway, hope this helps!

The making of my character was all recorded so you can start with the first part in the video and click the other parts as I make it.

I think I remade it with additional tweaks like 3 times so the final numbers might be in the 8th video of the Part 1 playlist.

Well, I'd post mine but shes uh... well lets just say not looking that great these days without spoiling anything.

She turned out decent. I got really excited when I realised I could fit a tattoo up there but it took me ages to find the right one.

Just as with Jeff/Jason and the fighting game sciences, it's simply impossible to know how good a character creator is until we get the researchback from Justin and Griffin over at Polygon. Thankfully, we won't have to wait long for all that hard data.

My attempts at making a character. Wish some of the sliders were a bit more clear. The most obscure thing about dark souls is what some of these face settings actually do. Got as close to what I wanted as I could though.

The Dark Souls character creator allows for some amazing caricatures. This is my main, ain't he handsome:

I've never spent a lot of time on my Souls character creations, but I figured I would try a little with this one. I wanted to invoke the idea of Lara Croft from Rise of the Tomb Raider. I don't think I was that successful, but I'm happy Duder turned out okay overall.

@probablytuna: Here my version of Casca from Berserk. I might go back and tweek some settings. I also saved the sliders for it if you wanna try and improve it.

@probablytuna: One of the things I love about the souls games is when it references Berserk. Also nice build :)

@mordukai: Looks good! Yeah I went back and tweaked mine a few times as well, that's why the hair is changed between my two posts haha. Also I was not very happy with the physique since his body looks too fat when he has the armour on. But now when I put any other chest piece his neck sticks out way too long. I can't be bothered restarting though, too far in. If you want to try another Guts build, I saw a pretty good one here. The face in my opinion is much more accurate than mine, but I would suggest tweaking the body/arms/legs sliders because he also makes him look rather fat (like I did before).

@a_turtle: Thanks! Same here, I didn't really think much of it when I first saw the onion knight in Dark Souls and it only hit me when I saw the image of Artorias and then someone compiled of all the numerous references. It made me appreciate the series a whole lot more knowing that a relatively obscure but beloved manga series is so influential.

@probablytuna: @a_turtle: I first got into Berserk after playing Demon's Souls and consuming pretty much every available information on it. I don't remember where, most likely Reddit, that someone mentioned Berserk as a source of influence. So I read the manga I could find at the time and watched the Anime.

The first direct reference to Berserk I noticed was in Dark Souls during the Taurus Demon boss fight. Reminded me a lot of Nosferatu Zodd.

I try to make pretty ladies in the dark souls game but it's hard sometimes.

I feel okay about how my dude turned out, the skin tone is a bit to shiny but I have some cool helmets anyway so who cares.

@mordukai: Whoa that is a super cool casca. I'm a huge fan of berserk and I've been looking for some faces. You said you have your sliders, right? Would you mind sharing them at all? I wouldn't ask if I didn't think it looked so good!

Been playing with her since last week. Sweetfx is amazing at fixing the lighting so that your character's skin doesn't look so blurry or dull.

I made a kinda okay looking Joker, so I'm satisfied.

@sinphoniq: can you upload the slides from your character? just so beaty girl

I tried my best. She still looks like she could be a very pretty boy. But I like tomboys so I guess it all makes sense?

I had two problems with the character creator, face looks entirely different ingame because of the washed out colors and lighting so you have to adjust accordingly, and it just seems hard to make a feminine face without exaggerated eyes and lips.

Can't wait to try making a scruffy badass dude though, for a playthrough with heavy weapons like Mourne's Great Hammer.

I dunno, you tell me:

This character creator is total garbage. It's even harder than in the previous games to make a decent looking woman. It pisses me off that this is my introduction to Dark Souls III. I'm seeing right now if I can find some good presets to download, as playing with these sliders is a waste of time. Why even bother doing character creation if you're gonna do such a lousy job? Just give me a good preset like you gave the female characters in the series.

I gave these my best shot. The Dark Souls character creator always seems pretty sub-par on the surface, but if you really dig in (and fight against what it WANTS to do) you can get some pretty good stuff!
