Right, I have a question when it comes to adding a character specific move list to that character's page. For example:

Ryu - Has the inputs for his special moves listed towards the end of the page.
Ken - However does not.

Now this may be a bad example as they're both shoto characters. But is it good practice to add the inputs for a character's special moves to their page? Or is this information better suited to a guide? Or both?

The guide system is somewhat unreliable right now so most folks have simply included the information on the character page itself rather than try to tackle the buggy guide system.

So for now it's totally cool to include inputs for special moves and so forth on character pages. Just be sure to format them correctly, make it easily readable and attractive to the page layout.

@Hamz: Ok thanks! One more question. How universal is the concept of using numbers as inputs? I notice you're actually the main contributor to both those pages! You've listed the inputs as "quarter circle forwards" etc. would it be equally acceptable to display a quarter circle forward as 236?

Does a concept for this exist? As it would be easier to just link that as oppose to showing how each number represents a direction on a stick on the character page. Or are the type of people visiting these pages already likely to know what these numbers mean?

@mwng: I'm only the top editor on those pages because they were vandalised and needed restoring. I did not actually contribute to the content on them so I haven't got much knowledge on fighting games or terms used to explain things relating to them.

I've given lordofultima a nudge to check out this topic. He's our resident fighting game guru and likely the best person on the mod team equipped to handle your question. Hopefully he will get back to you on this ASAP.

@mwng: The Street Fighter franchise usually uses arrows instead of numbers.

@Lone_f: I just find it easier to type it out in number form than insert arrows. But if you've got an easy way of inserting arrows that doesn't break the page then I'd love to hear it!

@mwng: You might wanna try Unicode, such as in this Wikipedia page. Don't know if it'll work for everybody, though.

  • Thoughts
I'm all for putting fighting game characters move lists on their wiki page, seeing as guides are borked at the moment. You just have to pay extra close attention to how their move lists change throughout the games, as several inputs have changed and moves have been added later in the series and then removed -- etc. I'd say listing every available move they had over every iteration of the fighting game franchise, then explaining in which games the move existed, what it did, and the various inputs they took to perform.

  • Examples
  1. A good example is the Spinning Pile Driver for Zangief, which is denoted as a 360 motion + punch / kick in most Street Fighter games. In actuality, it only requires six out of eight directions to be activated in most games, and in HD Remix they actually changed it to a half circle motion, so only five inputs.
  2. Another example is Ryu's mule kick, which only appeared in the Street Fighter III series as far as I know, but seems to be making a return in Street Fighter X Tekken with some added properties, that being the wall bounce which sets up a juggle combo. I'd like extensive history on command lists because it gives a good idea on how the character has evolved over the games they appeared in, and thus is great wiki content.

  • Move Notation
As for arrows, that requires unicode that not everyone can display or tiny images that are a hassle to line up properly, but I also don't like the numerical system for Street Fighter. I'm more for just designating the motions like QCF, HCB, 360 -- or if you have to, Mortal Kombat style. F, D/F, D, D/B, B + punch or whatever. For games where numerical systems are accepted I suppose it's fine, but the average browser of Giant Bomb may not understand what the numbers mean.

You could just spell them out completely, or note what the abbreviation means in parenthesis.
  1. Akuma's Hadouken: QCF (quarter circle forward) + Any Punch
  2. Sub Zero's Deep Freeze: Forward, Forward, Down + High Kick
