Hey all. Figured it might be a good time to write up a little FAQ on how the site's search works and some of the challenges / awesomeness involved in it.
Searching the site, aliases and you!
"So are aliases basically like tags, or do they only work for the user who registered them? They are not tags, which are descriptive bookmarks. These should only be used as an alias for game names. An alias is an acronym or commonly referenced name for a game. KOTOR for example is an alias of knights of the old republic.

KOTOR for example is an alias of knights of the old republic.Right, but once one person adds an alias, will it bind to the game for all users? It may sound like a stupid question, but I couldn't figure it out based on the original post.

Hey Dave (snide for those who don't know yet), please, please, please make an official wishlist thread, and sticky it. Like this thread and the bug list thread, just a thread where we can all post our suggestions for the site and features. If you dont have the time to keep the thread updated I would be more than happy to make a thread and keep it up to date, I want this site to become the best it can be, and I have a lot of ideas that I think would rock for this site.
Thanks bro.
"How does the autosearch work?
We auto suggest a bunch of pages we think you might be trying to get to. For the most part it works out pretty well. When it fails it's normally because the game you are looking for has words that are very common in other page names. In some cases you may be typing in a term and know the page exists but it's not showing in the top 10 results. That's because search is based off of popularity. So pages that have been hit often are more likely to show up on that term. Since we're a BRAND NEW site, not enough pages have become popular, so you'll have to do one of two things:Go to the main search page by hitting the magnifying glass
Hitting the magnifying glass will take you to a full search results page with more then 10 results.Browse for a game
You can browse for any game by going to the games section, then clicking the alphabetical filter at the top of the page. From there you can use the A-Z filters to check to see if the page you want is there.Doing either of these actions and finding the correct page will now help other uses find that page quicker.
That's fine, but when editing a page you can only use the autocomplete to select something, leading to inaccuracies like the wrong first game for the Grand Theft Auto franchise since the correct one isn't in the list. Is the only way to take care of this going to be making the correct page more popular?
Can I search for all games of a particular genre? Say if I wanted to find all Horror FPS games, how would I go about doing that. I tried just putting the genres into the search bar but it comes up with no results.

Go to Silent Hill's game page and click on the "horror" link in the general information sidebar.

I do think it would be nice to have some functionality to allow you to search by genre from the main page though rather than having to first find a game of that genre.
I can no longer add Aliases to any games... why? I don't get it... it's probobly not my browser... I'm using the latest version of Firefox.
There was a lot of confusion with aliases. Such as "DKC" and "D.K.C." for Donkey Kong Country.
Also, the first post of this topic might need to have a few words changed around a bit now with the new site redesign ;)
"D.K.C." is considered the same as "D K C", so such an alias in not necessary, nor would it likely work.
From what I can tell, the only thing in the first post that would need to be changed is the "magnifying glass" thing.
Yep, that's what I was referring to mainly lol. I didn't check the rest of the post, I just saw that and thought I'd post it.
It's more an issue with the search in general. Only mods and staff can add aliases anyway, so they wouldn't add aliases that don't actually do anything.
abit off topic here but is there a way to search forum threads? Because i usually try to see if theres already a similar post before asking a question.
No, we plan on allowing you to "search next 10 results" in the auto completer. We're aware of the problem. "Any idea when? It's been over 1.5 years now and the search is still limited to 10 (or maybe 12) results, which is VERY annoying...
Also, this quote feature needs to include the date too...
