For example, if someone was going to name all characters in a Street Fighter game would they have to think of their names and moves on the top of their head or would it be okay to do some online research?
Thanks.
What counts as copying in the Giant Bomb Wiki?
You are allowed to paraphrase and use info from other sites, but you can't copy and paste because that's plagiarism.
Copying those names would be fine, the reason is that those are dot-point facts. If you come up with a list of street fighter characters your list would end up identical to anyone else's list of street fighter characters. The issue arises when you start using someone else's unique phrasing. But, it is a bit of a grey area when your own words inadvertently end up almost identical to someone else's. For example, there's only so many ways you could ever explain that Blanka has green skin and orange hair.

Hope that helps. :)" Copying those names would be fine, the reason is that those are dot-point facts. @NekuSakuraba: The issue isn't really about using the copy/paste tool, it's about not being "guilty" of plagiarism. Don't take someone else's words and pretend that they are your words. Whether you are writing in a wiki or a school paper, it comes down to: Can you paraphrase? If Yes, do so. Facts and statistics can't normally be paraphrased, but they – along with quotes – can be cited, which is not something the GB wiki requires or especially encourages. The Fresh Prince page plagiarizes the song almost completely... but it's entirely appropriate in the context. It would be good to cite/mention that it's from a song, for the small number of people that have never heard it. But to an extent Giant Bomb is a community based on in-jokes. Turning the lyrics of that song (yes lyrics are copyrighted) into a deadpan history section is hilarious, and rare. Don't do that all the time. I wrote most of the Panties page, and killed myself laughing whilst doing it. I'm not saying it's good, but damned if it ain't original. ;)

"If you're copying a specific presentation of that information, that's not okay. If you're describing facts or ideas that already exist, those are uncopyrightable and there's nothing to worry about.

Was it a straight-up list of things that would be impossible to put in your own words?
" Using other sites for research is fine. Copy/pasting from other sites isn't. "My main issue is when does paraphrasing become too much? I've seen articles that looked exactly like the wikipedia article with just different wording which is still plagiarism but yet you guys still allow that.
That one seems to be more of a case of actual plagiarizing. Not sure why the mods defended it.
" @NekuSakuraba: ...you know that PM you sent me earlier today that was really long? You can't do copypasta like that. :| "I wrote that! xD
" @MattyFTM: What about images? I've been wondering about that for some time now. Aren't most of the uploaded images infringing copyrights in some way? "I guarantee you that a lot of the images on this site are infringing copyright...however, will the owners of said images file a cease and desist, ask for the image to be removed, or in more extreme case try to file a lawsuit? In almost all cases probably not so it really isn't a big issue which is why the staff hasn't brought it up....if there is a problem it should be taken care of on a case to case basis.
