Hell, all the banners here are brilliant. Aurahack's VHS ones are killing me: love that the Playstation one is just Tekken and Tony Hawk.

These are too good. They cant win it makes too much sense.

The giant bomb E3 banner thread is pretty much the only time I use photoshop each year. I really enjoy doing it and I always learn something new. This year .gifs! I've never made one before but that didn't stop me. Just spent a couple hours fiddling around with the banners I made the other day and figured out how to animate stuff in photoshop. Yay for learning new stuff!

The animated reveal here took this from being a slickly designed, yet altogether too-simple design and made it nearly perfect. It would be really cool to reverse the reveal direction, and have it actually trigger from the bomb in the center!

@aurahack: These are seriously awesome, what's your secret to that sweet VHS tracking distortion effect there?

@toots: About an hour's worth of looking up tutorials/help pages, realising they're all kinda bad, and messing around in After Effects for a while until I got something I liked. Channel blurs, noise, frame displacements, etc.

There are some absolutely terrific ones on here. I wanted to see if I could make something simple so I made these:

No way they are gonna win, but it's good design practice. Great work everyone!

@lava: I like the simplicity of them, though they bear a striking conceptual resemblance to face15's banners. ;A;

Hot tip: try fixing the composition, (text on left, logo on right, for example) or knocking out the logos some more to make the text stand out some. Even with the drop shadow, they blend in together a lot and the text is hard to read as a result.

@bushpusherr: It actually was my plan originally to reveal from the middle out but I'm too stupid and I couldn't figure out how to to that. Going in from the outside turned out to be a lot easier so I just went with that.

@fattony12000: I didn't really plan ahead with how I made my photoshop file in a way that makes it easy to just replicate the same thing so it will take a while to do the other companies. I'll likely be pretty bored on Saturday morning so I might try and do it then or I might try come up with something totally different.

What freeware can I use to make GIFs or even do photoshop type things besides the Gimp, always hated that confusing piece...

Don't worry about all this anti-gif talk either. Most of the mods aren't that persnickety. Well, as far as banners are concerned at least.
