EVO 2015 Preview

We say goodbye in an official capacity to BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and The King of Fighters XIII. BlazBlue and KOFXIII in particular are saddening to see go. KOFXIII has had a storied 3 year run at EVO, particularly the South Korea vs. Mexico rivalry during the EVO 2012 KOFXIII top 8. BlazBlue had the most exciting grand final last year and left both the grand finalists and some developers who had made the trip to see their game on the big stage in tears.

$50,000 = A lot of new phones

Thanks to a late $30,000 addition courtesy of Namco the total prize money is now over $300,000 for EVO 2015. This all started back when Capcom announced its partnership with Sony for the 2015 Capcom Pro Tour and the other developers have followed suit, whether its straight up donations from Aksys Games (10k for both XRD & P4UA) and Namco, or money from DLC sales from Ed Boon and the Lang Zone (which won't be the first thing he's dropped money on this month now that he needs a new phone).

Nintendo have yet to join the party unfortunately for the Smash community and Capcom can't officially acknowledge UMvC3 anymore because they don't have the Marvel license. Nintendo of America’s Bill Trinen will be in attendance and competing this year, maybe seeing EVO first hand will convince him to support the scene more.

Kudos to Justin for taking matters into his own hands! I don't know whether people were kidding or actually questioning Justin's integrity on this but he posted another tweet:

You can check out the brackets here and search for specific players here (if a searched player has entered multiple games it'll show them all).

In a move that has surprised many, the final 3 games are unchanged from last year. Marvel has retained not only a spot on Sunday, but its 2nd to last spot from the past few years. XRD takes the annual early morning anime spot while MKX, which closed out Combo Breaker 2 months ago and was 2nd to last at CEO last month, has to settle for 2nd out (replacing Killer Instinct). One of the men in charge of EVO, Joey Cuellar, said:

Mad Catz|Daigo Umehara is still the only player to win 2 SFIV tournaments at EVO, winning in 2009 & 2010
Mad Catz|Daigo Umehara is still the only player to win 2 SFIV tournaments at EVO, winning in 2009 & 2010

Which in this fighting game fan's opinion is a strange mindset to have considering Marvel's waning popularity in fighting game tournament streams for the past 12 months. That said EVO 2014 UMvC3 still holds the record for highest concurrent stream viewer-ship and its top 8 very exciting to watch!

One important fact that may get lost in the shuffle with all the talk about which games should get their finals where, is that this will likely be the final official USFIV tournament at EVO, with Street Fighter V launching in March 2016. If it is then I salute you Street Fighter IV, it's been a good 7 years at the top.

For an insight into the MKX scene at the moment and perceived "overpatching," hit the news section below.

CEO 2015 highlights

Last month was Community Effort Orlando, and once again CEO surpassed its previous event, check out some highlights including the Stone Cold Kenneth Bradley entrance which was covered by ESPN, Buzzfeed, SB Nation, Vice and a whole lot more!

Incoming Comic-Con 2015 announcements

An event that needs no introduction, SDCC is a place where Capcom and Namco love to cater to the casual audiences of Street Fighter and Tekken, including the reveal of Street Fighter X Tekken in 2010, which at the time seemed like the greatest fighting game ever, and indeed might have been had there not been critical errors in the final product.

SDCC runs from July 9-12, expect SFV and Tekken 7 related announcements. And expect this news item to be updated.

Predator available for MKX tomorrow (Tuesday July 7th)

Kombat pack owners can use Predator starting tomorrow and can be bought next Tuesday. ITs variations are Hunter, Warrior and Hish-Qu-Ten. The first two make sense, a trap variation and a close quarters, possibly rush down variation. Hish-Qu-Ten is apparently a name related to the Predator species in general.

Seeing the Predator take on Jason will likely get the casual MKX player on board once again.

Yatagarasu available tomorrow (Tuesday July 7th)

Yatagarasu Attack on Cataclysm is an indiegogo funded fighting game by former SNK / King of Fighters developers, the campaign ended on August 11, 2013 after receiving $118,243 with an initial asking amount of $68,000. It goes on sale tomorrow!

Fighting Game Community members are not pleased with the constant MKX patches

Before the internet there was no such thing as patches, and a common problem was you'd be stuck with overpowered characters for a game's lifetime (see UMvC3 now that Capcom can't touch it), but now a new problem is emerging. NetherRealm Studio's released a patch that changed characters, making some combos no longer possible, days before CEO 2015 and another one last week nerfing the seemingly overpowered Tanya.

According to members of the FGC, this frequent patching from NRS is not only taking away a tradition of fighting games, adaptation, but it's also hampering players at the most crucial point of the fighting game tournament calendar. In this post by EVO 2011 MvC3 world champion, Jay Snyder AKA Viscant, Viscant gives a detailed breakdown of why NRS need to take a step back and let the players play the game as is for a while.

Games that get patched don't always send you back to square one but some of NRS's patches have shown a curious knack for doing just that. At CEO I watched a bunch of dropped combos with Scorpion. His best 1 bar combo was changed, a lot of people--some who got relatively deep into the tournament--were doing the wrong combos fairly often. I saw a metric crapton of Hellfire Scorpion's running face first into armor. I can't fault the players, they had about 48 hours warning, some of them may have already got on the plane before realizing their character was gimped. This is not nearly enough time to make fundamental strategic changes or to get enough casuals to override your muscle memory.

Later into the post...

And what if it wasn't even necessary? What if we would have eventually solved Tanya Kombat X? It seems like Tempest Kung Lao beats her and Grandmaster Sub seems to do somewhat decently. What if there are 5-6 others who fight her well? She wouldn't even need to be nerfed. The competitive balance would advance, players would learn. But it's all hypothetical now. It seems that actually exploring these matchups and conquering roadblocks just isn't a part of the MKX meta.

It should make for interesting viewing at EVO to see who, if any, character stand out as stronger than others, and if the constant changes lead to any critical dropped combos next weekend.

Thank you for reading and happy watching!

This is the most packed EVO yet, certainly the highest paying EVO yet, hope you'll give it a watch! And if you're tuning in for the first time and are wondering what to expect, it might go something like this:

Probably good to clarify that this is probably the final USFIV tournament at EVO, not overall. The wording is a bit confusing!

Also, I suppose we're getting another GB FGC Illuminati chat going on? Can't wait!

My predictions so far for games I actually know about:

Mortal Kombat X: SonicFox wins

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Justin Wong wins

Ultra Street Fighter IV: Tokido wins

I am excited about Killer Insinct (especially seeing non-American entrants play!), Tekken 7, Persona but I'm just not that familiar with the top players of those scenes.

I haven't asked yet but I assume so!

I'm looking forward to seeing what competitive Tekken 7 looks like! I think Daigo's got this one, it would be pretty fitting to win the 1st and last SFIV tournaments.

I hope the final pools will be released soon. Gotta start predicting those juicy matchups.

Any word on @unastrike and/or @jeff (finally) attending this year? We know for sure Dave Lang is going at least.

MKX Odds: DJT (55%) Sonic Fox (44%) The Field of Yomis (1%)

Marvel: Jwong (30%), ChrisG (30%), FChamp (30%), Cloud (9%), Others (1%)

Ultra: Daigo and Mago are the most likely to win at roughly 10% each, Infil, Nemo, Kazunoko, Tokido, and Momochi are probably next. Strider has a 2% chance to win or thereabouts (which isn't too bad for Ultra) and returning champion Luffy has a 5% chance.

Xrd: Ogawa, Dogura, Kazunoko, others

A Korean (named JDCR) probably wins Tekken, though it's primarily a beta for the Atlanta crowd so I doubt it's a fair matchup; could be wrong.

KI: If CDjr sucks no one knows! Rico Suave maybe?

Good or bad at EVO, MKX will be just fine. The question is more if it will reach that wider audience. Especially in the competitive scene. And that's where the patching seems to have hurt it quite a bit.
Then again there is still plenty of time. It doesn't look like Capcom is going to be updating USFIV at all before SFV comes out and SFIV is really getting up there in age.
Marvel is definitely on the way out as well and I don't think Guilty Gear (or any anime fighter for that matter) is ever going to get the adoption rate of other fighting games in the West.
This leaves Smash (which will continue to do just fine but has very little overlap with other fighting games), Tekken 7 (no Western release date yet), KI (which will need a huge boost from the PC release to remain a contender) and MKX.

@fredchuckdave: If the real Guilty Gear Gods show up Kazunoko probably doesn't have much chance to win it, hell even Dogura probably doesn't.

And I don't even know how many or which real Tekken killers are showing up. Especially with Tekken Crash coming back to South Korea. But with the game only actually being released in Japan they are obviously the ones to beat.

@flstyle: Speaking of Tekken, there is supposed to be a big announcement tomorrow (7/7/2015).

As for my personal predictions and picks:

GGXrd: Ogawa has proven that he can perform well abroad but he did recently only get third place at GODSGARDEN 10. That being said I don't even think anyone who beat him there is coming to EVO so he's still the favourite.

KI: This one is pretty much impossible to predict. Microsoft money has brought a lot of hungry players out of the woodwork and CDjr underperforming means there is blood in the water.

MKX: There is Sonicfox, there is YOMI and then there is everyone else. The safe bets are Sonicfox, DJT, MIT and REO.

P4AU: With Bananaken dealing an unexpected blow to one of Japan's best players they might be hankering for some revenge. Plenty more Japanese players are showing up for EVO so I don't think Bananaken's odds are great if they did their homework on him.

Melee: Leffen is on a hot streak right now. He's definitely the man to beat.

Smash 4: It is downright impossible for ZeRo not to be the hands-on favourite.

Tekken 7: Depends heavily on who is coming. I know for sure Nobi is competing so I guess I'll give it to him.

UMVC3: The game that has gotten surprisingly competitive in later days. ChrisG really should win it this time but I wouldn't be surprised if none of the 3 Marvel gods get the prize.

USFIV: I feel like post 2010 the winner of USFIV has never been hands-on favourite. What I mean by that is that the one everyone expects to win never wins.

There is no denying that Kazunoko is on the hot streak right now so this one should be his but competition is just too fierce right now to point out a true favourite. My personal/emotional choice to win it is Tokido just because he's the most deserving of a big win. Nobody has had results in SFIV on his level without actually winning for a really long time now.

Infiltration has been underperforming as of late so unless this has all been a massive sandbagging manoeuvre (and I wouldn't put it past him to actually do this) I don't really see him winning EVO again. It's a similar story with Xian and Momochi although we all know Momochi is very hungry to win EVO so he might pull a few rabbits out of his hat.

Daigo of course always has the biggest target on his back at all times so winning EVO again in any Street Fighter game will be insanely hard. That being said, if Daigo is in form and he gets to top 8 his chances increase dramatically. Meanwhile Mago can always make clever use of the fact that most of the attention will be on Daigo and Tokido to sneak through the brackets.

Then you have the likes of Xiao hai (who has really stepped up his game since the Topanga World League), Nemo (always a massive threat and many people cannot deal with a Rolento of that level), Bonchan (always solid), Poongko, Fuudo, Pepeday, RB, Gamerbee, etc. I give them lower chances of winning but I would also not be surprised if any of them won.

The biggest non-East Asian threats are Luffy, PR_Balrog, Dieminion, Nuckledu, Smug, 801 Strider, Snake_Eyez, Justin Wong, Ryan Hart and Valmaster.

@flstyle: The "MKX community" having a problem with patches is a bit of a misnomer; it is primarily people from other games that were only briefly part of the community. The non NRS crowd as it were. If you want a counterpoint for the OP here's one: http://testyourmight.com/threads/patches-overwhelmingly-help-nrs-games-not-hurt-them.51268/

The most compelling MKX story point for me is what happens if there's 7 Tanyas and DJT in the top 8? Will the world explode?

If you'd like a counterpoint to THAT counterpoint, Viscant replied with a lengthy but worthwhile post on page 24 of the comments.

@hassun: I think the tournament is big enough + Kazunoko is good enough innately to have a chance. I've been watching some 2012-13 SFIV matches lately and the game seems almost the same; it's just storylines that are different primarily; a few characters here or there (and red focus). Momochi vs Jwong at 2013 CEO was a really close match (after JWong won over him in Grand Finals the previous year) and it's hard to imagine JWong doing that well now. He's better at marvel now though!

@viciousbearmauling: Cool beans, I'll have to check it out at some point. Edit: NRS' own Pimpimjim's response immediately after Viscant's is rather amusing.

@starvinggamer: So if someone other than the 3 bounty lords wins Marvel who do you think gets "god" status? Or will they be relegated to Flocker status exclusively? I mean I guess Viscant could maybe but aside from impossible victors. I think it might just be Nemo and people with really non orthodox teams; e.g. if Flux won somehow not only would it be hilarious but there's also just no chance of people recognizing his godliness. PR Balrog's innate skill at the game makes him a weird outlier in this discussion.

If Noel Brown coaches both players simultaneously during Grand Finals does he achieve coach god tier?

Edit: Now that I think about it Flocker winning might be the funniest result.

@fredchuckdave: Yeah, Flocker winning would probably be the un-hypest way for UMvC3 to go out and catch MrWizard a ton of shit for his Sunday ordering. That said, there aren't really any Marvel players that would graduate to god status for winning. No one has that kind of results. Winning Evo would only be the start of a long road. It's more like Leffen status (demigod status?). I feel like Clockw0rk is probably closest. KBR is the people's champ but like Jan, it's hard to see him up there based on team comp alone. Flux has to work doubly hard if he wants to come back I feel, since he went from looking so strong to completely dropping off until recently. He's fallen into more of a Paradigm/Angelic level in my eyes.

Not but seriously we all know PR Rog is the secret fourth god of Marvel o_O.

KBrad to win Evo.

@fredchuckdave: Lol Jeremiah's post is less a "counterpoint" and more a bunch of garbage nonsense. Viscant-sempai's posts are like beacons of light through a blanketing darkness of willful stupidity. Plus Ultradavid's snark makes me chuckle.

@millaj: You can still watch the srkevo1-3 2014 archives today if you want to. I imagine all of that will be rewatchable on Twitch and on YouTube once Twitch takes them down. This probably applies to any side stream as well. Capcomfighters is a different story. Twitch archives of that account are locked away to subscribers so you will have to wait for them to upload it to YouTube. Sadly they don't seem to be doing full uploads anymore. Lately I've only been seeing a select few late tournament matches.

@starvinggamer: Note I'm not necessarily on the other side of the fence I just think there's some amount of room for debate. Though the Yomi factor is definitely underrated, like not only do I have to climb this constantly resetting tower but there's already people far above my skill level just waiting to beat me back down again. Can you do Gross' 38% combo? Working on it by ear but too lazy to go figure out what it is exactly.

@l1ghtn1n: Friday finals hype? I guess the games relegated to saturday status can now brag about not being on friday.

Assuming USFIV is exclusive to Capcom Fighters on Friday, the rest of the games over the weekend are spread out across srkevo1, srkevo2 and srkevo3.

Rick and Jebailey of Combo Breaker and CEO are rather disappointed with Smash Wii U's placing for the weekend.

@flstyle: Hell I would be too. I mentioned earlier that if they are not going to put Smash 4 on the final day they should at least give it a premier spot on Saturday. And it didn't even get that. I'm sure there are some reasons behind that like putting it on when even little children are still awake but still. We're talking about the game with the second most entrants of the entire tournament here!

P.S. Looks like the GB image system fucked up that picture of the schedule.

@thunderslash: Nah I kept getting jobs and by the time I had decided to go the three day passes were all sold out and it seems kind of pointless to go if you're not there for the finals. I'm still halfway decent though, I suspect a lot of those pools are going to be pretty free. Also they keep buffing my character. Would not surprise me if there was a pool consisting of entirely Sub Zeros, Scorpions, and MiIeenas.

So enough talk about who's going to win, who's going to get murdered in the Bloodbath on friday night? How many ShinAkuma666's will there be? Will Freemerica prevail and get more than 2 people into top 8? Will Hassun ever sleep? Will Seth Killian sob uncontrollably? Okay, that one's pretty much guaranteed.

So I take it Twitch only keeps the most recent stream archived, meaning the 2015 streams will replace the 2014 archives? Are the entire srkevo streams uploaded to a particular YouTube channel?

Thanks for the assistance, by the way. I haven't kept up with this stuff in a while.

@millaj: These days Twitch.tv only keeps archives for 2 weeks (regular users) and 60 days (Turbo/Partners). Highlights can be stored indefinitely but are limited to 2 hours per highlight.

I'm not really sure why the EVO2K14 archives are still up there. Maybe because they were added before this rule came into effect? As for YouTube. There is no real EVO YT channel afaik. Not sure where the videos are going to end up.

I don't expect as much of a bloodbath as last time since there hasn't been a recent new version of the game. But of course some top players are going to run into each other and be sent to losers early. And those early losers will then tear apart all the lower level players who also got sent to losers. Bloodbath pools to watch (in the current version of the brackets): A10, E6, D18, C14, B17

Guessing how many US players make it to top 8 will be tough but I believe 4 will be the upper limit.

I actually have some important stuff to do that weekend... So no I will probably not sleep.

Even though I'm not going anymore because of moving, still kind of fun seeing my name in the bracket (as Rec Roulette). Bummed that I'm missing out on playing Tekken 7 and getting that Lili shirt. But it will be fun hanging out with you all for the festivities. I already have the whole weekend off, ready for some amazing action.

PSA wise, if you are planning to get Killer Instinct for Windows 10 whenever it comes out, you might want to pick up the complete collection off Xbox Live for $32 (normally $80). All of that stuff is crossbuy between Windows 10 and Xbox One.

@fredchuckdave: Not sure which one that is. He's the Hollywood Cassie player right? I know this meterless corner one.

OpenerxxFlip, Run, f21xxFlip, Run, 21u4, 21u4, 123xxFlip

Alternatively you can omit the second 21u4 and end with 123xxEX Nut Punch for the same amount of damage and the setup afterwards. Opening with b212d1+2xxFlip nets you 40%, opening with overhead f3 nets you 37%, and opening with low df1 nets you 36%

What I discovered from CES was that Killer Instinct is fun to watch. I'll be tuning in for that.

@starvinggamer: Thank you sir, I believe he does 3 21u4s which presumably just makes the window narrower.

I can confirm that Killer Instinct this year starts and ends on Saturday, we'll see how much of it is on-stream when the stream schedule goes online this week.

Sadly i'll miss a bunch of it. Going to be in various stages of air travel on friday, and various levels of "I can't afford these roaming charges" for the rest of it. Might be able to see some grand finals on saturday and sunday since they're on super late in the east.

Marvel, KI and a smattering of anime games are my favourite to watch. Can't get into smash, and SFIV interests me depending on who is fighting.

@thunderslash: If I'm good at SFV I'll probably go next year, if I suck then maybe not but I'm sort of tempted to go and be a punching bag.

Looks like the SFV beta won't have support for PS3 sticks. Hope you got your TE2s everyone.

Since SFV doesn't come out until late March next year I think we'll still see SF4 for one more Evo next year. They have two smashes so I can't imagine them not having two Street Fighters for one year.

Also one important note on P4AU: BananaKen said that the guy he beat in GF did study up on the Slabs matchup to get ready for him and STILL lost, so research only gets you so far when you are as crazy as he is. We'll see though, any tournament as big as these skill alone only gets you so far, you need a little luck (unless you are Daigo in SF4 who's only missed top 8 once in all these years).

Time to analyse the brackets and see if anything major changed.

Oh boy there are some changes indeed!
Pool A10 seems to be unchanged and is still a bloodbath.
Xiao Hai is no longer in the E6 pool and is now in D1. This is a major change as it now puts him directly in the path of Bonchan, Dogura, Gachikun and Misse and eventually even Daigo if they both make it to the semifinals!

Both 801 Strider and Chris T are now no longer in the B17 pool. Strider is now in A7 and I can't even find Chris Tatarian anymore. These changes have made the F1 quarterfinals pool pretty brutal. Try this list on for size: Mago, Jebailey, Shinba, Gootecks, alucard, Micronuke, KSK, 801 Strider, Humanbomb, Papatiwawa, Dbkoopa, Eita, xsk_Samurai and AfroCole.

Don't forget the handy unofficial tool: http://evo2015.j.layershift.co.uk/

P.S. @flstyle: Looks like Steve Austin saw K-Brad's entrance at CEO: http://podcastone.com/pg/jsp/program/episode.jsp?programID=542&pid=521556 (at 01:00:18)

@starvinggamer: Yoooo! KBrad ensuring himself another 10 years of bleeding blue.

Unrelated, but man I wish that I can choose different stages for training mode in USF4. At least let me change the stage music, cus that training stage song weaving in and out of the "low health" mode is starting to grate.
