No one thought abstract art was art when that first came out. Look at it today. This guy in a way is doing something a little more similar to what amelia earhart did, I'd call that art.
ok so i'll concede this is art. just like any art (movies, music, paintings, etc.), it also has the right to be judged as either good art or bad art. this is bad art.
I thought this was silly when I saw it on RPS a week or two ago, and I still think it's silly. Sure it might be art (as much as a discarded Cornetto wrapper in the glove compartment of your car is art), but it's silly art in my opinion.
Yeah I saw it popped up on Massively as well. Did not think GB would pick it up too, straight silly. I hope his performance goes okay and all is well when he reaches Portland.
@TheDudeOfGaming: Oh and if you think this is ridiculous look up Martin Creed. I went to the MOMA a few years ago (NYC) and one of his pieces was a blank ripped up piece of paper. It had about two or three paragraphs describing the piece, crazy!
"Performance" art is the most bullshittiest bullshit ever. I went to art school. For four years I had to write papers about garbage like this. All I wanted to do was learn how to draw well enough to make a living off it. I did that, but I also had to deal with... this. :(

This is honestly the dumbest thing I have heard in a while. I really question why the hell this is an article on Giantbomb. Why would anyone waste there time writing that whole thing about something so incredibly pointless. Art should inspire. Art should reflect the grand human emotions of despair, love, triumph, grandeur, anger and happiness. Art should inspire emotions in people. When I see a man sitting in a box playing video games, I feel nothing. For me, his art fails, because it inspires no emotion within me.
@Korolev: Isn't it meant to inspire you to rethink about how you spend so much time in YOUR box? He says that it's some people's coping mechanism and I presume he's against it too. Personally I'm not judging anyone, that's just what I understood from reading the article. You sound a bit aggravated about it and perhaps that's part of his intent? A lot of it is very pretentious and a lot of it is shite. Howwever, I want one of ye geniuses it explain to me what has caused so much fucking moral outrage amongst ye. My favourite ones so far have been Art is supposed to inspire and this makes me feel nothing! Well it had to make you feel something if you took the time to write about how stupid it was. maybe disgust or pity or maybe it tapped into the unquenchable pit of rage that seems to be at the heart of every mother fucker with computer these days? And my other favourite is what does it mean? Well maybe its a social commentary about dopey gamers who spend all their time eating cheetos and drinking gatorade, locked in their bedrooms isolated from the world. Or maybe the dude just loves boxes and videopgames and figured that this was a good way to get money so that he could combine his two loves with an epic road trip in such a way that his missus won't nag him for playing Lord of the Goddam Rings all the time. maybe he's just a crazy masochist. See there are a million possible reasons why this guy is doing what he's doing. Its not a great mystery. maybe if ye sat down and thought for a minute before reaching for the hate key on your keybaord you wouldn't feel the need to spout such venomous garbage all day long.

this people read 'art', see its not a painting and immediately dismiss it before theyve even thought about it. and yet if it wasnt flagged as art people might actually give it a different response, which is a shame. good on this guy for doing something that half of you critics wouldnt have the balls to do
Okay, a lot of you here seem to be claiming this isn't art without even giving a definition of "art", but if you think this man is claiming that the artistry of his work comes purely from the fact that he's sitting in a crate playing LotRO then you obviously haven't read the article. The article clearly explains that this piece is about the trauma he will endure when he is in the crate and how having a video game there will change that experience. Even if you don't think this meets your definition of art, at least acknowledge that this is about self-exploration and experimentation, I'm sorry but claiming it's just a guy in a box for the sake of it makes you look ignorant. Oh, and whether you believe this is "stupid" or not, none of you have the right to say that he shouldn't do this or that other people shouldn't consider this art. He's entitled to do what he wants in the name of art, people are entitled to observe it and while you're entitled to your opinion, no one is making you watch this. I would have to agree that a huge amount of female toons are created by men. I asked a friend once why he made a female toon, he said that since he'll be looking at the backside of the toon for countless hours, it might as well be shapely.

I actually found out about this a week before this article was published. One of my closest friends is an associate editor for an art blog, and he got the press release for this emailed to him, saying that they were trying to reach out to the art community first and foremost before taking coverage from the gaming blogs (I'm paraphrasing, but this is more or less the wording they used, making it pretty clear that they valued art blog coverage far more than gaming blog coverage). We laughed at the press release and deleted the email. Honestly, I feel like that says everything about this stupidity.
I think this is pretty cool, exploring your own psyche like that is pretty intense. I suffer from acute claustrophobia and I would probably have a heart attack mid-way through. Bravo, to this guy. Performance art is pretty cool. Also to all the a-holes really come on? Just because your life sucks does not mean, you have the right to shit on this guy.
