What do you think games will be like in 10 years. How influential do you believe they will be in the entertainment industry as a whole (movies, music, television)? How do you see them evolving and what would be the most exciting advancement to see in hardware and software?
A Vision of the Future
Seeing as games make more money than movies and music right now, I see gaming reaching new levels of economic gain. I think your guess is as good as mine regarding what games will look like though. There's so much we don't know yet about technology, so a whole lot can change in 1 year, let alone 10.
I'm not so keen on the idea of strapping on some goofy helmet and being in "virtual reality". I want that immersion factor, but not many requirements. I'd rather see more innovation with what we have rather than a competition on which company can make the best "fake-real-life."
I would hope that games become more interactive and not just prettier. I would love to play a GTA game where I CAN go anywhere. Where I could go into any building, any store etc...A game like Battlefield: Bad Company. I would like to really be able to fully destruct an environment and have it feel 100% natural. Of course AI needs a lot of improvement as well. I really hope that games focus more on these aspects rather than trying to get games looking like a Pixar movie.
Graphics now have less draw than they did, "back in the day" which is to say that now "pretty" graphics are a given. I think we'll see more attention to detail under the hood. Smarter AI, better physical modeling, be it proper IK rag doll stuff, or even just decent lighting, not to mention proper cloth animation and crowds, etc. I expect there will be a movement towards emergent gameplay depending on how Little Big Planet works out. You can already see steps towards this with "The Force Unleashed"
If there is a headset, I imagine it will be nothing more bulky than a pair of glasses and some ear buds, nobody is going to wear a helmet for hours. Though I do expect that Wii technology will give rise to a new form of data glove.
I feel no matter what happens in the video game industry, as long as there is competition among the videogame creators and the console makers, the industry as a whole will only get better. If one can predict what will happen ten years from now I think the interative approach will be a big factor not just with the AI but with other people around the world.
