" Ninja Theory did a good job with Enslaved, so my expectations for this game have gone up. As long as the game is fun to play, I will just get over Dante's new look.Gameplay > Every other aspect in a game. "
yeah i totally agree that gameplay is the most importent aspect.
Shame that Ninja theory are so shit at that particular part
" @SuperfluousMoniker: Let's be honest here, the last real DMC was DMC3. DMC4 was made by new guys who did a kinda queer job, it wasn't bad...but it was kinda queer, and I don't want them doing it again. Ninja Theory has yet to make a good game in their history. However, when they do fuck up...maybe Capcom will give it back to the guys at Platinum for a proper sequel. "
You ARE aware that Capcom was the one who wanted the big change right? They asked for it. And yeah, that second link has series creator Keiji Inafune asking Ninja Theory to change Dante's look more radically. I guess if you're going to be mad at someone, it really should be Capcom.
@Jethuty: Care to elaborate? Both of those men have ridiculous haircuts, long coats and no shirt on underneath those coats. I've liked some of your contributions to discussions before, so I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt and say that maybe you just feel really emotional about this, but would you care to tell me what exactly makes the design on the left better than the one on the right (besides "the one on the left came first")?

Like white hair or not, thats the established character. obviously you havent played the games and therefore you dont really care. That would be like redesigning mario, making him wear a dark and white outfit, with a beret, not jumping on goombas but shooting them. Its that radical of a change. also its a serious case of a redesign.
the fact that you think kenji inafune had anything at all to do with the series, just shows me that you pretty much have no knowledge on this subject. Kenji inafune was also extremely fed up with his job at that moment and were making some stupid ass decisions.
New Dante looks like the head of Ninja Theory. Literally, like he used EA's gameface to replace Dante's head. That's why I don't like it- the design itself is okay, but the fact that someone in charge is arrogant enough to do something like that is a bad sign for the development of the game as a whole.
Also, because I haven't seen any games from Ninja Theory that were very good. I don't know, maybe it'll be excellent, but the weapon they gave him in the trailer- some kind of extending sword/whip thing- screams of generic hack and slash combat. Weapons like that might as well be a giant advertisement for "Our combat sucks, so here's a weapon you don't need good controls to use". It worries me.

Devil May Cry 3 had a pretty great story. The whole thing with Lady v. Arkham, at the very least, was fantastic.

Are you really saying changing Dante's hair color shatters the basis of the Devil may cry universe?
@Jethuty: Yes, but the whole point is that Ninja Theory wants to make a completely new DMC game with a completely new design of Dante. Nothing dictates that they have to strictly make Dante exactly how he has been for the past 10+ years or so. It's kind of a bummer that he's going through a radical change if you have attachment to that character (I have no feelings on the matter, since I never played the DMC games), but what the studio wants to do is ultimately their decision.
You can whine about it all you want, but that's the character that Ninja Theory wants to create, and for the time being, that's not going to change.
@kingzetta: its not just the hair color. Its the face, the outfit, the hair, the voice, EVERYTHING that made him the character who were. They even gave him habits that he outright said he hated and couldnt understand why people would do that to their body(smoking).
@VinceNotVance
Its not that a new company is making a new DmC, its that NT is making a new DmC. Obviously they dont know their source material, they havent been able to get a steady framerate in any of their titles, their games have been riddled with QTE, and their overall approach to combat and gameplay have been slugish and unimpressive.
and its not like the character design of Dante has been the same for 10+ years. Every iteration in the series had a new design of Dante, all impessive and clearly thought through. Most people just remember his DMC3 Design because that is the game that got the most attention.
The fact that they are also royally screwing over the fan base is just icing on the horrible cake that is going to be DmC :I
@Jethuty: Yyyyyeah, I played every single Devil May Cry game from #1. And that includes the garbage #2 that so many people seem to forget about/gloss over. Sooooo, YEAH! I may have been wrong about Inafune, but directing your rage toward Ninja Theory, when it's pretty clearly Capcom that you SHOULD be pissed at, is just silly. Frankly the fact that you equate Dante, a character with around a decade and four games to his credit (three of them even remotely good) with Mario, a character who's been around for over thirty years with double-digit games under his belt, lets me know that you're not at all interested in having a real discussion about this. You're pissed that they changed a character that you love, I can understand that. All I'm asking is that you define WHAT is pissing you off beyond a change in hair color. I mean were you pissed off when the "new" character in DMC4 was just a palette-swap of Dante? Cause that's probably what made them want a new look more than anything.
@kingzetta: Seems to be the argument from where I'm sitting.
" @kingzetta: its not just the hair color. Its the face, the outfit, the hair, the voice, EVERYTHING that made him the character who were. They even gave him habits that he outright said he hated and couldnt understand why people would do that to their body(smoking). "
Well it's a reboot, anything else ever name devil may cry never happened. Dude might not even be half-demon in this game.

When has it been said that this was a reboot? If anything, I thought it might be some sort of prequel.

I really dont believe you have played all of the Devil may cry games, whatever.
and the fact that you didnt get my mario comparison, blows me away.
I never said i wasnt frustrated with the fact that capcom is outsourcing the DMC franchise, and i have no problem with them doing so. Its the fact that they choose ninja theory.
Also the fact that said that most people forgot/gloss over(?) kinda shows your ignorance on this topic. People werent and arent hating on DMC2 because it was garbage, it actually was a alright game. Which is why people dont like it/wont talk about it, because it wasnt a worthy succesor to DMC1.
" @kingzetta: its not just the hair color. Its the face, the outfit, the hair, the voice, EVERYTHING that made him the character who were. They even gave him habits that he outright said he hated and couldnt understand why people would do that to their body(smoking). "

If they are making a reboot, why the fuck not just make it a new and uniqe ip? obviously they cant get the fans from DMC to like the new DmC and they changed the character so much they might as well just make a new ip. Its a terrible buisness decision just because you want a reconizable brand to work with, when you are creating such a fuss from it.
I mean, it hasn't been THAT long. @Undeadpool said:
" Remember everyone: hair color and coat color matter far more than anything else, evidently Apparently a total badass Apparently "emo" "
That is not the only difference, his face is ugly as fuck, he's skinny as a Tim Burton's character, and his outfit is just retarded. Seriously. And that hair cut isn't just emo, it's also derp.
Oh and it's just the director for the project or something so, yeah, that sucks.
Dante was never a crazy cool visual design. But he never looked completely STUPID.
@Jethuty: Here's the thing; I think you're giving Dante's legacy a bit more credit than it deserves. Even if you might think so, Dante is nowhere near an iconic character on the level of friggin' Mario. I doubt he's even on the level of Leon Kennedy.
Not to mention, on the whole it seems like you're mostly stating an opinion with your argument instead of backing things up with facts. Just because you don't find Ninja Theory games all that enjoyable doesn't mean everyone else agrees with you. A ton of people loved Enslaved (including writers on this website), but no one said that DMC is going to be Enslaved part 2. We can't really comment on the game itself until we actually get our hands on it, so until then, just chill out & wait until the game ships before you harp on it "royally screwing over the fan base".
@Jethuty: Fortunately your belief doesn't change the fact that I've bought all four of these games within a week of them coming out. You seem to be in this fanbase that believes only in extremes. If I'm ok with the new Dante, I must have hated the previous games. If I liked the previous games, I can't be ok with the new Dante. You can believe it or not, but I love the gameplay of the Devil May Cry franchise. Maybe I just love it enough to know that you can still have that great gameplay even though the character changes his appearance.
It's not that I didn't "understand" your Mario comparison, I just disagreed with it on several different levels. I don't hold Mario as "classic" as Dante, so I'm okay with changes because he doesn't have has much of a track record. Really, it would be more like changing Kratos from having the blades on chains welded to his gauntlets/skin to having him with an assault rifle, giving him a full head of hair, and changing the voice actor. Would it be different? Yes. But it could still be really, really good. You're selling this character and franchise that you love short. We haven't seen any actual gameplay from the new game, and if it sucks, I'll be the first to come forward and say "holy crap! This looks TERRIBLE." But if it doesn't, you'll have a tough choice to make.

Same reason Bioshock infinite, has the Bioshock name on it. It has nothing to do with Bioshock, but suits want the brand on it. It may seem bad business to you, but games with brands sell a lot more than ones that don't. It's like how movie tie-in games use to be. Those games use to sell really well regardless of quality, just because it said "Batman" on it.

so, im not entiteled to an oppinon, even through im backing it up with facts and all you are doing "HEY GUYS ITS MARIO YOU CANT COMPARE THEM LOL LEGACY", when thats not what the comparison is about, and its totally spot on?, and the fact that i got plenty of facts and all you are countering with is indifference to a franchise and "LOL WAIT FOR THE GAME DUMBASS"

The fact that mario is a classic video game character and dante apparently isnt doesnt change it one bit. Its changing the character to his polar opposite, for the only goal of changing to appeal to the lowest denominator and totally stripping away anything that made that character?
I would say 4 games with 3 cameos (with one being recent and playable) a pretty good track record most video game characters have a tough job to follow.
And im looking objectively from NT track record so i would say my predicting is pretty solid, and if NT somehow manages to master something they couldnt even mimic i would be impressed.

yeah i am pretty sure, i think even kevin levine himself confirmed it, but i cant be arsed to find a video clip of it right now.
its not that enslaved is a bad game at all, i really, really enjoyed that game.
I just dont like NT coming anywhere near the DMC franchise.

In short, LOL WAIT FOR THE GAME DUMBASS.

I wouldn't say they're trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator at all. I'd say making him a scrawny, runaway-esque, punk is fairly against the grain of the usual "HOOAH FUCKIN' MACHINEGUNS buffer-than-humanly-possible"- types that seem to sell multiple millions of copies.
Listen, man, I haven't been a big fan of Ninja Theory's other properties. I didn't bother with Heavenly Sword, and I really loved the story of Enslaved if not the gameplay, but I really think that a new, thoughtful story and character is something that could really revitalize Devil May Cry. Because as much as I really, really like the games, Dante isn't that interesting in them. He's entirely one-dimensional, two at best, within the confines of his own series. DMC4 was kind of my last hurrah. I didn't care about Nero, and Dante seemed like he was included because people would've flipped out if he wasn't. If Ninja Theory can actually make Dante a fully realized character like they did with Enslaved (again, not the best gameplay, but three AMAZING characters), then maybe that's enough, ya know? Vince is right, Bayonetta is a better game, and she's a better character. So let that franchise have it. Devil May Cry could use some fresh air before it becomes like Resident Evil and requires a full-on redesign from the ground up.
" Well people bitching like you got Sucker Punch to change Cole's new look back, So I guess keep it up. "

Vince is right, Bayonetta is a better game, and she's a better character. So let that franchise have it. Devil May Cry could use some fresh air before it becomes like Resident Evil and requires a full-on redesign from the ground up.
"
thats not the point, the dmc games were based around a one dimensional character (which i dont think is true at all, if anyone cared to check up on any material related to DMC, ie the novels and stuff, they would properly agree with me) who complimented the gameplay. And that is exactly what Dante did so well and that is why people love him so much. I dont agree that Dante isnt a fully realized character, but does every video game character have to be fully realized? not to beat a dead horse, but marios only agenda is saving princess peach and people seem to eat that shit up.
And isnt this a full redesign from the ground up?
also if platinium got the DMC franchise back, i would die a happy man.
" Hey guys, I just won the internet battle! I'm proud of myself! I officially have a big E-penis & even @Jethuty: resorted to calling me a dumbass (as well as making up the new word, "dumbass-ness") because of it! Be proud of me & give me the attention I so desperately deserve! "
thats the lamest cop-out i have seen you pull off, but alright ill take that.
@Jethuty: No, you wouldn't. Because Platinum would change the character just as much. Because Capcom would demand that they change it.
And don't direct me to novels or anime or any of the apocrypha. If a character can't become interesting and three-dimensional in four entire games, then I'm not going to read a book or watch an anime based on that character. And again, that's been Mario's agenda for thirty years, he began before games really COULD tell any kind of story and he's endured due to a mixture of fond nostalgia and an unheard of track record for quality within this business.
I'm not saying every character needs to be William Munny, but if someone's going to go to bat for that character never changing, then I want to hear WHY. I DO love Dante as a free-wheeling, demonically murderous party-animal (I used to call my manager on the in-store phone where I worked years ago and say "This party's gettin' CRAZY!!" when I needed his help at the front), but his shallow nature means that I'm not going to be terribly attached to the character, so I'm not going to care over much when they change him.

No, they wouldnt?
thats all i basicly have to say.
You do know that Shinji mikami made dante right?
The whole "Capcom wanted to change Dante, WE DIDNT" is just a lame way to save face from Ninja theory.

No. They wouldn't keep Dante the exact same. If they were asked to "remake" Devil May Cry, I imagine they'd change it up.
I am aware of the great Shinji Mikami having created Dante. And where is he now? Doing his own thing without the crushing oversight of Capcom? Creating absolutely original and hilariously incredible IPs along with the madman Suda51? It really seems like Capcom would try to distance themselves from this if they were somehow "ashamed" of where Ninja Theory had taken this. Particularly since it's their response to the backlash.

i thought DMC1, RE4, Godhand and Viewtiful joe were original ideas. But again im just one duder.
and considering the track record of shinji mikami, and the fact that he made the very character, i would say Dante would be in alot safer hands with platinium. Even if they did a ridicules redesign or change.
On a sidenote mate, why are your reply's and responses forwarded to me twice?

DMC1 was great, but they did nothing with it. They had made a bad ass who was an extremely shallow character, which COULD have worked, and they absolutely SHIT on it in the second iteration. Something I loved about the first was Dante's shit-talking in the face of a vastly more menacing foe. It's something I feel they haven't captured properly since the first game since they were too busy trying to make him way more serious. The third was great, it was a cool origin. The fourth? I actually liked Nero, but he was still just a palette swap.
RE4? Amazing! Leon Kennedy goes to the School for Badasses and emerges a new man. But it was also a completely new take on Resident Evil that was derided as betraying the originals. And RE5...oy.
Viewtiful Joe was INCREDIBLE, but what have they done with the character? Stuck him in some cameos and MvC3?
I respect your opinion. You are just one duder, but hey, so am I. I concede that I might be wrong and Ninja Theory MIGHT screw this up, but frankly it's as much of a risk as Capcom screwing it up again.

i really dont know where you are coming from with the whole dante being shallow thing, but most people here apparently perceive him that way, perhaps im just a simple man, liking simple thing.
Believe me, i would like nothing else more than Ninja theory making a kickass game and one kickass DMC game in particular, but looking from the track record of NT and what they have done so far, i believe that the future of DMC looks really grim.
also Capcom have been wasting pretty much all of Clover studios ips, which might as well be, as they didnt sell well and would have to be changed so drastically, to the point that wewouldnt be able recognize the franchises.
i will be blaming Capcom and NT EQUALLY if DmC becomes a trainwreck.

This is where we differ. You've once AGAIN insulted me (calling me "simple") where I haven't once done that to you. Again and again I've said and demonstrated that all I want is to have a rational discussion and that I'm open to your way of thinking. Yet you call me a dumbass, you make wild, baseless claims, and you say that I don't "get" a two-dimensional character. And I said earlier that Dante is an extremely shallow character within the confines of four whole games. I know there've been novels, I know there've been anime, but if you can't tell a deeper story across four whole games, then the apocrypha isn't worth reading/viewing in my mind. It's the same argument I get with Chris Redfield, quite frankly. Sure, he's a completely blank everyman with absurd musculature and no defining characteristics (beyond "loyalty," which is the easiest thing in videogames to fake), but if I only read the novels/watched the anime, I'd see what a deep and resonant character he is. There have been plenty of games that have made me care more about a vast list of characters in one single game than I have cared about Dante across multiple games. Do I think he's a cool bad ass? Absolutely. Do I think that several hour and a half long movies accomplish the same thing? Yep.
