I love the age of empires games and played through the 3rd one, but wasn't really interested in going to the age with guns and cannon. Basically i'm looking for a graphics update of AOE 2, any suggestions?

I can't think of anything that exactly fits what you're looking for.  RTSs lost their way a bit during the '00s.

Age of Mythology is brilliant, but obviously it has magic n shit in it.  I think Medieval II: Total War is probably the best thing for scratching the AoE2 itch, but again, it isn't that similar.

Edit:  Stronghold is pretty good.  Maybe check out the latest Anno game - they're more focused on the city building & economy than AoE, but they have a somewhat similar feel imo.

Other than the ones already suggested, only Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds comes to mind.  It was made using the same engine.  It wasn't as good as AOE2 but it played pretty well, and the novelty of playing a star wars version of the game was pretty cool.  No one plays it online anymore though.  Still, your best bet is just to head over to www.voobly.com and play AOE2 online--the community is still quite active

Empire Earth might have horribly outdated graphics by now, but they're 3D (that makes them both better and worse at the same time. I personally think older 3D games have aged far worse than later 2D games). It takes you through from the Stone Age to mech warfare, future ages, but you can set Age cutoff points in any match, and go as far or as little as you want.

Try Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds.

It uses the AOE 2 engine, and is pretty much the exact same game, except it's way better, and it's star wars.

Example of an opinion being wrong.

So you're saying that the same game, but with more stuff is an inferior product? That's like saying Halo 1 is better than Halo 3. That's like saying Mortal kombat 1 is better than mortal kombat 3. I think you might have a learning disability.

@keyhunter:  The very fact that it's a Star Wars game makes it less appealing to me than the historical setting of AOE2. I'm guessing that's what Chuggsy was implying.

Hey thanks for all the suggestions guys...yeah I own age of mythology rise of nations so those aren't new options. I guess my hubris and fervor for the genre will never be sated. I dunno why I chose to write like that but deal with it.

Oh and I love star wars but I like the historical stuff better for rts...I need Battlefront 3 for Star Wars

Oh yeah and I have all the crusader games but didn't really like them as much as AOE but still great...even the fantasy one...actually that one was kinda gay

saying clone would be an insult to this amazing game, but there you go -- Seven Kingdoms II: The Frhytan Wars.

It's probably my favourite real-time strategy game ever. Too bad it didn't get much attention because aoe2 was released 2 months after. I guarantee you'd love this game ;D
