I'm just reminiscing...
Rare to have a movie game be any good...

Dead Space is fairly similar in many ways, but I loved how in The Thing you had to test your teammate's blood to find out whether they were actually aliens, and you had to keep the other members from freaking out...

Anyone remember playing that game?  Any other's like it you could recommend?

It was an incredible game but to be fair it had been so long since the movie it really shouldn't have been thrown in with all those rushed for release day movie games.

If I remember right, first I got stuck and had no idea where to go, gave up, came back to it months later, worked it out, got killed by the first 'thing' guy, got sent back about an hour, and then gave up again. Never touched it since. Shame because I did like the idea behind it.

Only spent a pound on it though so I wasn't overly bothered.

I played it about 2 years ago on PC for a podcast game club. Holds up surprisingly well! I kind of liked how reloading would actually dump the rest of your ammo, so you had to be more skillful and not reload every time you could. But it was just an alright game, imo. Nice Kurt Russell cameo, but the story didn't really go anywhere too interesting.

It was fun on the Xbox, but at some point I put the game
down & never bothered to finish it.  I don't really put it in the
same category of other movie-based games seeing as how
the developers worked on it years after the release & had
more time to work on the details.  As opposed to having
the movie & game be released at around the same time.
Those kind of movie-based games are horrid.

The Thing is one of those games that should receive a
retro/HD remake & improve the controls while they're
at it & fix the story to make it better/different.

I never played it but I read up on it because I had heard that John Carpenter liked how they continued the story and I wanted to find out about the fate of the characters from the movie.

I had it on the xbox.  Played a few hours but had to give up on it because you couldn't invert the controls.  All the control setups were pish if you needed to invert.  I used to look at all the video reviews on the net and whine because I couldn't play it.  If somebody has done a runthrough on Youtube I'd watch all of it.

I remember seeing pictures of it as a kid and being pretty blown away. Never actually played it, though.

I have it on Xbox. I have been meaning to play it again for some time now but whenever I start it I never get really far until I loose interest.

The game had good ideas but failed to deliver on most of them. I still had a good time though.

I don't really know any games like it but if you listen to podcasts Rebel FM did a Game Club on The Thing. Its worth a listen.

Pretty brilliant. It was disappointing with how scripted your squad mates turning into Things was, and went against a lot of the marketed paranoia into figuring out who's actually a giant pink plant monster in disguise. Otherwise it was a really great third person shooter with some great effects and production values.

I played it a little bit on Xbox1, but stopped rather early on, as one big issue I had with the game was the flamethrower, that thing simply didn't have any range at all and would essentially just set my feed on fire. Not sure if there was any control thing I overlooked (analog buttons?), but it felt completely wrong. Also remember having some issues aiming vertically, auto-lockon would do that properly or something a long the line, has been a while.

Edit: Just put the game into my Xbox1 to confirm my issues. Trouble with the game is that you can't aim vertically in third person view, only in the first person view, but in that mode you can't walk, thus aiming at low enemies is tricky. The game is also weird with its weapon modes, the flamethrower for example, while standing up, just sets the floor on fire and thus your shoes, but when you crouch it shots forward and only in first person you can aim up and down. Another weird thing: When switching to first person the game allows you to lean to a side, but when you rotate the view in first person the lean direction does not rotate, thus you can lean into the direction you are looking into, really weird. Overall the controls just feel awkard.

I played the game at San Diego Comic Con, but never had a chance to pick it up. I still have the Outpost #31 patch they were giving away.

The Thing was an an excellent game and would actually make my top 10 list of "most overlooked games of all time" if one existed. Any fan of survival Horror would love it. Hopefully after the new movie comes out they will make another game to tie in with it; as long as its the same developers it would probably rock.

I got about halfway through before getting stuck and aimlessly walking through the snow. But what I played of it I liked.

I loved that game so much - though i listened to the rebel FM gameclub play through of it a couple of years back and it definitely seemed to fall short on a lot of its premise, that being said i still really enjoyed it back then

You can invert the controls on Xbox1. Options->Advanced Controls-> View Type = Invert (or something like that, have only the German language PAL version here)

Other than some gameplay gaffes (the blood tests), I really liked it. I was caught off guard with how good it turned out.

Played it on the PC and loved it, even though the story is absolutely incoherent. Very atmospheric, cool watching dudes puke for no reason. It was well worth my time, i thought.

You had to fix, like, 27,000 fuse boxes in that game. It got annoying real quick.

I played the PC version after listening to the Rebel.FM game club and seeing various other video game related entertainers rag on it (Spoony). It was ambitious and had potential, but the actual shipped product was pretty bad. Not bad enough that I didn't finish it, though, so there is that... one of the worst video game end bosses though, but hell, fucking Gears of War 2 pretty much stole this end boss in every way, including the whole "hold down the trigger until it's dead" portion, which is what makes it so crappy in the first place.
