Does anyone just straight up prefer the look of hand drawn 2d fighters? Maybe it's just because lots of us remember the old, but Marvel vs. Capcom 2 looks rather cool even today:
(believe this is ps2)
Anyway, but that doesn't matter, the thing is, this generation especially, with HD sprites, 2d games look flipping amazing. Don't believe me? Look at Blazblue. And you know, it's not even so much just the clean look, but the fact that with these games, there's just a ton that usually goes on in the screen and they orient things to make it, at times, the background look like a crazy work of art and the attacks all look just straight up nice.
Nothing against 3d fighters (tekken is awesome!), but for 2d fighters, can't we just have it hand-drawn again?
- On a side note, what exactly has triggered the ressurrection of the fighting genre? This year alone there's Street Fighter 4, KoF, Blazblue, and Tekken 6. Soul Caliber and Virtua FIghter have came out as well, not this year though.
The only thing that sucks about the whole genre is that, well, to me personally, fighters aren't worth $60, they don't last that long. Do want to pick them all up eventually though.
Edit: Okay, I have to post a video. Can a 2.5d fighter do this?
Anyone prefer the look of 2d fighters?
There's room in my system for both to coexist :)
Seriously though, I'd love to see a 2D fighter using assets such as though found in Oboromurmasa or Odin Sphere; Vanillaware stuff just looks awesome! It seems like a certain level of detail goes missing when a fighter is 3D, not to mention 2D fighters seems more over-the-top in their movesets.
According to one of Aksys's Podcasts, BlazBlue's Online Modes are also supposed to rape Street Fighter IV's... but we'll just have to wait and see on that.
I'm waiting for BlazBlue with bated breath and may end up dropping SFIV for it, as it's not a proper extension to SFIII (the best Street Fighter in the series).
"I think they are two seperate beasts, and I certainly appreciate a number of 3D fighting games, but if I had my way the 2D as a whole would never die, so yes, 2D fighters look great!"
I'm honestly just talking about graphics here.
If we go into gameplay, I'd say tekken and outrageous 2d fighters are where it's at.
love 2d fighters...prefer them (both gameplay wise and visually) to 3d fighters...one particular 2d game that was gorgeous (though not a fighter at all) was odin sphere on ps2...that looked amazing and i would love to see those guys work with capcom to produce a fighting game using that type of visual style. and thanks to the thread creator for making me aware of BlazBlue, that looks absolutely beautiful, will definately be getting that (along with KOF XII) :)
Hand-drawn 2D spirtes tend to age better then 3D.
Also, the character models from SFIV look kinda like shit.
2D is subject to graininess. 3D will eventually look old and ugly. However, 2D is less subject to graininess than 3D is to oldness and graininess so on a 2D plane 2D is slightly above 3D, but not so much that a 2D fighter with 3D graphics is unforgivable. The most important part is good art, which isn't necessarily technically demanding.

"SF4 looks fantastic and plays great still. 3D > 2D"SFIII looks better. SFIII > SFIV
"Kou_Leifoh said:I bring it up because it's a fact =)"DOUBLESHOCK said:Man, whenever anyone brings up either of those games you kind of go cccccrazy dont you?""SF4 looks fantastic and plays great still. 3D > 2D"SFIII looks better. SFIII > SFIV"
I much prefer hand drawn sprites in fighters, which is why I'm really looking forward to the future, in KoF12.
EDIT:
SF3 DI > SF3 for art. The background art is better in DI
"I much prefer hand drawn sprites in fighters, which is why I'm really looking forward to the future, in KoF12.EDIT:SF3 DI > SF3 for art. Yeah, I hope they do that when they do, it would make the versions the most definitive.
Artistic choices are not a matter of better or worse, although I will agree that 2D ages better than 3D (as many other posters have pointed out).
That being said, I like to play 2D fighters to mix things up, but after a while I just have to go back to 3D. To me, 2D fighters are like candy. They are great at first, but if you don't take a break, it feels boring and nasty.
I prefer 3D in most cases.
Zooming and scaling is better in 3D. The animations of something like SF4 make 2D fighters look so choppy. These days 3D allows for much more detail. 10 years ago when 3D was primitive I might have given an edge to 2D. Now 3D can do everything 2D can do visually, but better.
i do prefer 2d more now. street fighter 4 and all the super smash bros (well its pretty much 2d) changed it for me and also with soul caliber sucking now..
"No because 2D fighters mean 2D hitboxes."
What do you mean? They can make the hitboxes very exact if they want. Not really something dependent on the graphic type
"No because 2D fighters mean 2D hitboxes."You do realize that Capcom did a huge experiment with this on Street Fighter IV.
They originally started-out with 3D Polygon Collision Detection and found it to not work-out so well.
They then ditched it and went with old skool 2D Hitboxes... and the rest is history! :p
