Now begins the stress test for the Kickstarter concept, as it relates to fans of supposedly dead genres.

Double Fine Productions has now earned over $3 million for its brand-new adventure game, and inXile Entertainment is looking for $900,000 to produce a long-awaited sequel to Wasteland.

Double Fine hopes to avoid crashing Kickstarter as its funding moves towards its 5:00 p.m. PST deadline by hosting a live stream of the final hours. As of this writing, Double Fine’s at $3.1 million.

And though Wasteland 2’s Kickstarter ambitions began much grander than Double Fine’s with a $900,000 asking price, it’s already looking clear players will respond by matching that with more. Right now, Wasteland 2 already has $160,000 in the Kickstarter bank.

“All of you are making my day,” said Wasteland designer Brian Fargo on Twitter. “We might really get Wasteland 2 made. It bring tears to my eyes.”

If you aren’t familiar with Wasteland, know this: Fargo founded Interplay, and helped produce, finance or design classics like Bard’s Tale, Descent, Baldur’s Gate and Fallout. A true pioneer.

Fargo even managed to convince original Wasteland designers Alan Pavlish and Mike Stackpole to come back for Wasteland 2.

Unlike some other Kickstarter projects, including Double Fine's, Wasteland 2 has scoped out what could happen with more money. Tthe project is budgeted at $900,000 but will require $1 million to make happen. If they only make it to $900,000, Fargo has pledged to pitch in the last $100,000. If the project moves beyond $1 million, there are plans for more maps, more music, more choices, and the porting the game beyond PC is possible.

"Like you, we’ve long dreamed of being able to bring Wasteland back,” reads the Kickstarter pitch. “If you share that dream, if you’ve always wanted to watch and influence the game design process from start to finish, this is your chance. If you’ve wanted to change the world and get the games you really deserve, then do it by funding this Kickstarter. The road to Wasteland 2 is there.”

Thank you, Patrick, for not making the whole article about Fallout (because that's all you kids know about, at least by proxy of Fallout 3) or pretending you know anything about Wasteland (like RPS's awful article), and just saying "here's the facts."

As I said in the other thread, this is the kind of thing that I would like to be funded out of a kickstarter project. I'm just cynical that these guys can make an RPG that will reach the lofty expectations they put upon themselves. Wasteland came out a long time ago, and it seems like the guys who were the lead designers didn't do a lot else after the mid 90s. Brian Fargo is a name with a pedigree, but as far as I can tell he was just a producer for a lot of the RPGs that I personally hold dear (Fallout 1, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, etc.), and you have to remember that InXile's last big game was... Hunted: The Demon's Forge. Yep. That game.

Still totally going to put money down at some point by the way. Regardless of my qualms, I feel like I should support this thing out of principle.

Ultimately I know I'm going to regret both the Double Fine project and this one. Shelling out money in advance before even seeing anything just makes me inherently nervous.

Yes. As I understand it, Interplay wanted to do a sequel to Wasteland, but EA held the rights to the name and there were issues between the two companies, so they made Fallout instead. At some point along the line Brian Fargo bought the rights to Wasteland from EA, and now we're here with him trying to raise money to make a proper sequel.

Its going up 10k nearly every time I refresh. I have no connection to Wasteland other than enjoying the Fallout series, but I'm excited that there's a market for super hardcore PC games like this. Once I have a better flow of cash, I'm definitely chipping in.

Played it on the C64 back in the days around 88/89 and it was a nice incentive to learn English. Basically I just learned English to be able to play video games before the age of localization in Germany...

Wasteland is more of an old-school dungeon crawler than what Fallout is. Think the old Gold Box D&D games, not isometric turn-based CRPG.

This is the first kickstarter I've backed. Doublefine was a shoe-in for reaching their goal, so I didn't really see the need when I could just buy the game once it came out. But Wasteland is a little more iffy. Since Bethesda changed what the Fallout name means, $15 sounds like a very reasonable investment to potentially resurrect the spirit that series had.

I do like Fallout 1, and am decidedly mixed on Troika's 3 games (Arcanum is a bit of an ambitious mess, Temple of Elemental Evil is amazing, I should really play more Vampire the Masquerade). I dunno, InXile's track record hasn't been the greatest recently. Hunted was mediocre, and I played that remake of The Bard's Tale and aside from being really funny it just wasn't very good.

I might be in, does anyone know what happens if it doesn't reach it goal? (i.e. will backers get their money back if they don't go ahead with the project? I know if they do start and then fail, then the money is spent, but if they don't start, then what?)

Well it's already got nearly a quarter of it's funding in the first few hours with 34 days left so you're probably wrong about that. 
  
Finally put in a last minute pledge for the Double Fine Kickstarter. Went for the 100$ pledge, it's like a super collector's edition, but better!

If this is the case, I might consider buying this IF this kickstart is successful. Unfortunately, in the mean time, I can't commit to forwarding money on an unmade project. Now I know how a producer feels. Or, at least, how I think they must feel :P

Like many here I never played the original Wasteland, but Fallout 1 still is my favorite RPG of all time and if this manages to capture even a third of that game's magic (Something Fallout 3 failed to do) I'll consider it money well spent.

Everybody gets their money back. Kickstarter only charges you if a project is successful.

I pledged. I played the original and in its time there was nothing like it. Gaming definitely wouldn't be the same without it. It's in that field of early titles like Ultima (not Ultima Online but...Ultima).

I will say that if younger gamers don't feel any connection to this title I'm not surprised or bothered in the least. I will say with all of the passion I see foisted on indie games and their often retro trappings Wasteland is at least something worth reading about.

However, if you developed the muscle memory to type:

LOAD"*",8,1

without thinking about it there's a good chance this might mean something to you.

I'm interested in how quickly fatigue will set in with Kickstarter. People get excited about things when they first hear of it, but complacent after a while. I'll be surprised if games are able to get much out of the service after a year or so.

@Zor: I was also hesitant about backing before I read that you will not be charged unless they reach their goal. So that made me chip in on the Crowdsourced Hardcore Tactical Shooter in the style of old Rainbow Six. I certainly hope both are able to take my money because these sound like great games.

Wasteland was basically a Wizardy/Bard's Tale type of thing only with guns instead of swords and spells. It was set in post apocalyptic Vegas with weird sci-fi suff like tripods and such in it. I had a friend who had it for Apple 2. It never came to Amigo so I didn't play much of it and what I played was on a green monochrome monitor.

I'm sure Wasteland fans will fund this, but I don't think it has nearly as broad a fan base as adventure games. For the DoubleFine project, you didn't have to be a fan of a specific adventure game even. It's more general, and therefore has more general appeal. Also Tim Schafer + 2 Player Productions is much more compelling. From reading the other comments on here. Clearly I'm not the only one thinking this. For all the Wasteland fans, I still hope it works out for you.

Yep, they got my $250 almost as soon as it launched, this morning. And while I was at it, I increased my pledge to Double Fine as well as increasing my FTL (space rogue) pledge. Even the boxed version is $10 than most PC games sell for these days and the digital is as cheap as an XBLA game. Hard to lose, here. Even if things don't turn out right half the time, I'm a big fan of throwing money at real developers going the crowd-funded way. At $15 or so a pop, you can throw money at every one of them and if even half of them turn out, you're way ahead of the game (think of all the $60-$80 games you've bought that weren't even worth $15).

This isn't the path for every game or every developer, but it's a path for some developers to resurrect games otherwise lost to time and business as well as to connect developers back to gamers -- instead of gamers being this sort of ethereal cloud of people off in the distance.

You have to read the history on Interplay to see what went on, there. They've basically been stuck treading water and making whatever they're paid to make. I'll pitch in a $100 or more sometime this week, probably more.

If i didn't, i'd be putting a foot up my own ass and would be the greatest hypocrite ever, living with eternal shame.

Gosh, imagine if everyone said "as soon as everyone else donates, I will". We'd never get anywhere. For $15, you could just play it in a VM on your mac, if it only reaches $900k (well, $1m, if you count the $100k Fargo will chip in, himself). And if it reaches $1.5 (in part thanks to your $15+), then you can play it natively.

It's funny how Tim Schafer wants to make a point and click adventure, a dead genre that all in all is just not that fun to play and everyone is scrambling to donate and sell their children to support him.

Yet the creator and team of some of the best RPG's ever made that won numerous awards and always can be found in top 100 best games ever lists, and people don't want to donate for some reason.
