What do you think are some of the best games that pandered almost exclusively to fans?

Mine:

  • Resident Evil 6
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
  • Dissidia: Final Fantasy (duodecim)
  • Mass Effect 3 (Citadel DLC)
  • Super Smash Bros.
  • Hyrule Warriors
  • Persona Q Shadow of the Labyrinth

Namco X Capcom.

Frank West references The Prisoner/the Iron Maiden song The Prisoner (doesn't matter which one specifically, I'm a huge fan of both)

It's like the game was made specifically for me.

I don't understand how South Park: The Stick Of Truth

It's pretty much Fan Service: The Stick Of Fan Service

Also Sonic Generations... I guess, but some people are insane and pretend it isn't the best Sonic Game

Metal Gear Solid 4 is pretty much fan service made game form, to the point were I found it actively distasteful. Remember that thing from that game you liked, not only are we gonna put it in the new game, we'll have the the games characters talk at length about it. Combined with a plethora of smaller references and flashbacks. I cant see anyone other than fans blinded by their fandom, enjoying that part of the game.

Kingdom Hearts is basically Dsiney/Final Fantasy fanfic incarnate, even if they have gone away from that a bit of late (and in turn went up their own ass, but that is another discussion all together).

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy (and it's sequel, Curtain Call). If you like Final Fantasy Music and rhythm games, it's basically a must buy.

EDIT: I'll also second Dissidia: Final Fantasy. I have 200+ hours into that game and another 200+ into its sequel. I would fucking love an HD remaster on console.

Project X Zone seems to have been a bad game that relied entirely on fan-service.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are steeping in fan service, especially New Vegas. In a good way I think.
Although by this point of the next Fallout is just more "Heeey, look! Brotherhood! Enclave! Dogmeat! Remember all of this stuuuuuuuuuufff? It may turn into a bad way for me.

Are we talking about games with the best "fanservice", or the best games that happen to have "fanservice" (side note, calling this "fanservice" is a little risky as this term means something different than what OP means in the context of anime / manga)?

For the former, I'd go with either Smash Bros or Project X Zone.

For the latter, MGS 4 might be the right answer.

It's not a video game, but the Time Spiral expansion for Magic the Gathering was amazing. It was all about the game itself, and the way it played around with what the game fundamentally is, was really interesting. It's basically the MGS2 of card games, even down to some problems with overcomplexity.

Persona 4 Arena is probably my favorite. I got it for the story (I don't play fighting games) and was actually surprised by how much I liked it. Ordered Ultimax a few days ago.

ME3 Citadel dlc is pretty cool as well.

Kingdom Hearts is still firmly in the Disney camp. But it's now just "What if Disney was a Square Enix game?" in terms of narrative. Or, better "What if Square Enix just made Star Wars, but with Disney?"

The Citadel DLC for ME3 was the best use of fan service to me. It completely highlights the content you remember the most about the game - the characters - and weaves it into a story that emphasizes how Shepard's relationships with his crew was his ultimate power.

  • South Park: The Stick of Truth is practically the definition of fanservice
  • Metal Gear Solid 4. That entire game is fanservice to anyone who has played Metal Gear Solid 1-3
  • The post-Interplay Fallout have a decent amount of fanservice in them, specifically the background story that you pick up from logs and NPC dialog options
  • Skyrim has a fair amount of fanservice from all the books and some NPC dialog
  • Saints Row 4 did a great job of referencing past events from Saints Row 1 and 2. Fanservice galore right there.
  • The post-GTA 2 GTA games are fanservice to anyone who's watched any 80's or early 90's action/crime movie or TV show.

Gonna agree with whomever mentioned Theatrhythm. Also (U)MvC3 is packed FULL of fanservice for Marvel fans and Capcom fans and even seasoned tournament players that know the etymology of every colloquialism in that one Yipes video.

I agree with MGS4, except I don't think it's entirely meant to appease the fans. If it was, Snake wouldn't have been old.
