I am going to buy another console. I will either buy a PlayStation 1 or PlayStation 2. Are there any good games for these consoles that I must own?

Are you excluding things that have been released elsewhere, like on Vita, PS3, and PC? Because if not then there is a whole lot of suggestions coming your way.

Well just get a Ps2 and have the ability to play games from both systems. Unless I'm misremembering, you can play almost any Ps1 game on a Ps2.

PS2 is backwards compatible. Almost any PS1 game is playable on a PS2. I"m not aware of any that aren't. PS2 has the better selection of games anyway.

The Tekken games for PS1 and PS2 are fantastic. Way better than more modern ones. Also the Ratchet and Clank series and Jak and Daxter series on PS2 are excellent.

Just a note that while PS1 games do run on a PS2 you will still need to buy separate PS1 and PS2 memory cards.

Now for the PS2 suggestions:

  • Final Fantasy XII
  • Persona 4
  • Bully
  • Medal of Honor Frontline
  • GTA Vice City (Other GTA games too but if I'm picking one this is the one)
  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (Other Tony Hawk/Matt Hoffman games too but again, if I'm picking one it's this one)

And some PS1 suggestions:

  • Need For Speed High Stakes
  • Castlevania Symphony of the Night
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Resident Evil Director's Cut

Gran Turismo is a bit more sterile and doesn't give you any real options or rewards for changing difficulty. However, you get a bunch of cars and events. And rain. Gran Turismo 4 is the peak of the series but you could also consider Tourist Trophy which was their foray into motorbikes.

@billmcneal: Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance 1 and 2 are still great games on PS2 and we aren't likely to see HD remakes

Soul Reaver on PS1 was great as well, not sure if that is on PSN these days though

They are the games that come to mind but the standard MGS, Cool Boarders, Fear Effect, Soul Blade and Tekken are all great PS1 games, and if you were born in the UK, WORMS!!

For PS2, Final Fantasy X, God Hand, GTA3, Vice City, San Andreas, Mercenaries, MGS 2, Red Faction 1 + 2, SSX 3, Time Splitters

It all depends what you're into, there are great JRPGs on both, FPSs are better on PS2

Probably get a PS2 if you've got a choice because it plays PS1 games and its easy to pick up memory cards for cheaps these days

PARAPPA THE RAPPER

This and Um Jammer Lammy require CRT televisions due to the levels of input lag on modern displays and tight timing required in the controls.

I agree with a lot of the games already listed, like Metal Gear Solid 2, Shadow of the Colossus, etc. I would recommend NBA Street 2. It is in my opinion the best over-the-top sports game to be released since NFL Blitz.

I'll suggest Devil May Cry 3 - it's the best character-action game I've ever played, and no-one in this thread has mentioned it yet. But as you can tell from the responses, there are an awful lot of really good games for the PS1 and PS2. I think you'll be spoilt for choice...

Silent Bomber, Spyro: Year of the Dragon, and Tomba! 2 are my all time favorite PS1 games.

Most of my favorite PS2 games have been covered already, FFXII, the Jak and Ratchet games, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Okami, Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner, We Heart Katamari, and God Hand are amazing games as well.

Man its been so long and most have probably already been mentioned but these are defiantly on the must list

PSX

Resident Evil 1,2,3

Parasite Eve 2

MGS

GTA2

PS2

Some of the best PS2 games have been HD'd so id just play those versions

Gran Turismo 4

God Of War 1,2

Final Fantasy X

MGS 2,3

RE4

Tony Hawk 3 (PSX version is junk compared to this, pretty sure it still has an online community because you can just host on your machine there are no servers to go via i should try this out someday)

there are so many more gems

Nobody has mentioned it yet, so I will. One of my all time favourite PS1 games: Kula World. Such a great puzzle game.

EDIT: And now that I was reminded of its existence, I think I'll go ahead and buy it for my Vita on PSN.

@billmcneal: You'll need separate memory cards for both PS1 and PS2 games on a PS2. They're cheap as dirt, though.

There's so many good PS2 games that I don't even know where to begin. This topic could go on for 500 pages and you'd still not hit them all. I actually have this huge list of PS2 games I need to play that were rated 6 and higher. I do intend to one day play through them all. I recommend you pick up the best quality cables for PS2.(Component) They make the lack of aliasing "jaggies" stand out like crazy, but the color and clarity is well worth it.

I'll recommend the Maximo series now since I think it's way overlooked these days. Hell, Capcom was on top of their game that generation and could make up a whole post.

SOCOM, Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six 3. If you've never played a tactical shooter, these are great and a great look at the franchises before they jumped the shark to generic action games. (Obviously the PC would be a much, MUCH better platform for the latter two, though the PC version of R63 may be overwhelming with planning out missions)

Since nobody has said them, I'd say the Summoner games. I think I liked Summoner 1 more, but 2 was a much bigger game, probably better overall really. The first city in Summoner 1 sucked... You know what, just get Summoner 2, it's really good if you like RPGs.

Disappointed in the lack of Katamari Damacy... Which by the way turns 10 this year. Jesus I'll never understand the way time works. Also get the sequel, We Love Katamari.

PS2 is still the king of consoles.

@billmcneal:

Sure is. Back then the technology was simpler and the PSX was more similar to the PS2. That and it was kind of just expected for there to be backwards compatibility.

PS2:

NFL 2K5

Soul Caliber 2

Final Fantasy X

Metal Gear Solid 2

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3

PS1

Suikoden 1 and 2

Final Fantasy Tactics

Castlevania Symphony of the Night

Resident Evil 1 and 2

Metal Gear Solid

And all the Wipeout games. Missing out on the last console wipeout is probably my biggest regret about never owning a PS3.

Shadow of the Colossus

One of the best games of all time for sure, but the frame rate takes a major, MAJOR dive in some parts of the game on PS2. It was easily in the single digits for me on the final colossus. Much better to play the HD PS3 version.
