Alright, I haven't gotten HR yet, but after reading a few reviews and thoughts on the game, it lead me to this thought.

Is HR a better game than Deus Ex? I have the opportunity to get one of these two games and Deus Ex is considerably cheaper these days. Should I just get the original or is HR that much better?

I played them both. Both games are great, but I think Human Revolution is the better game overall. You don't NEED to play Deus Ex first, but I'd play it first(if playing old games doesn't bother you).

I still haven't played Deus Ex : Invisible War

Keep it that way. It's for the best.

I think Deus Ex is better, though whether it's a better game in this modern era is debatable.

If you have no nostalgia for the original, you may find it difficult to get into due to old mechanics and controls. You could jump straight into Human Revolution, whereas it would take some time to adapt to Deus Ex.

But again, maybe nostalgia is clouding my judgement. I did really enjoy Human Revolution.

Deus Ex.

HR is merely a great game, Deus Ex was so much more.

I couldn't get into Deus Ex when it came out. So I'll naturally say Human Revolution.

HR.

Like seriously, if they failed to make a better game than one that came out 11 years ago they're fucking useless.

Except they didn't because it came out 11 years ago and is nigh on unplayable.

If you think Deus Ex is unplayable then you're doing it wrong. I played it recently and it was competent enough, the gunplay is shitty but it always was.

Human Revolution is certainly the better game thanks to the improvements of modern design, but obviously the original still deserves credit for managing to actually make good on its ambitions for allowing the player multiple solutions to any given objective. The actual shooting is pretty clunky, and the story is kind of dumb, but it's very much going to be up there on my "Best games of 2011 that didn't come out in 2011" list come December.

And, as I am currently in the process of playing Invisible War for my blog: Yes. It's almost as bad as everyone says it is. It's not necessarily awful per se, but as a game meant to be the successor to Deus Ex? Man. Wow. I entirely understand almost all criticism of the game only a few hours in.

Deus Ex was amazing back in it's day, whereas Human Resources is 'just' pretty good. That said, Pac-Man was amazing but I would never choose it over CE:DX.

So, all things considered, it would be better to save money and buy/replay the original than to buy HR?

Works for me, I'll pick up HR when it drops in price.

Human Revolution was just an OK game. It had some interesting parts and the story was intriguing at first, but by the last two hours of the game my brain screaming "END ALREADY!" The only reason I finished it was determination to not waste my $60.

I've never played the original, though, so I can't comment on it. From the looks of it, though, it does not appear to be something I'd adore like so many others.

So, my suggestion is to blow your money on something else. But if you must get your cybernetic conspiracies on, then I'd pick up the cheap original and pick up something better that you missed a year ago or so.

I find Deus Ex to be nigh unplayable in this day and age. Believe me, I've tried. Several times. I tried once last week even. I did not play it when it was new.

I'm sure it was fairly impressive back in its day, but people claiming that it's "so much better" than a lot of what's out today, well, I'm pretty sure their nostalgia is strong.

That said, I haven't played HR so I can't compare yet. I plan to though! I hope it's modernized enough for me to get into it.

EDIT: Missing words.

DX is on the must-play list imo. Don't bother playing anything else until you've played it.

I don't get it. One hour later, Deus Ex is one of your favorite games of all time? Or had you played it before and you were considering buying it again? Instead of the sequel that you've never played before?

You're all kinds of strange.

Deus Ex is the best game ever, but I doubt I would think that if I played it today. It's the best experience I've ever had with a game, if you'd like to put it that way. HR is pretty damn great though, and with modern standards I would consider it better.

If they had done some better voice acting, and updated the AI so that it played like a 2011 game, and not a 2001 game, Human Revolution would be the perfect game. As it stands, it's still a fantastic game, but only slightly better than the original.

Check my favorites games list, Deus Ex has always been one of my favorite games.

I'm just cheap and if spending $5-$10 can get me a better game experience than a newly released HR, then I think the choice has been made.

This. I think HR is technically better. The first one hasn't aged particularly well in some aspects by today's standards. But in terms of story and overall feeling, I prefer Deus Ex. I absolutely love HR, though.

I'm playing through Deus Ex again right now, and it still does some pretty amazing things.  First and foremost, the level design is probably the best of any game I've ever played.  It seems much more open than HR's, even though that game is no slouch in that department, either.

Another thing it still does great is the feeling of character progression throughout the game.  Augments and Augment Upgrade Canisters are a much bigger deal in Deus Ex than in HR.  They are much harder to find, and stumbling across one feels really rewarding.  The augments themselves are big deals, too.  Each new one you install can change the way you play... drastically.

The seperate skill system is also great at making the player feel empowered throughout the course of the game.  I've been spending a lot of time in the skill menus, carefully monitoring my skill points every few minutes, totally anxious to jump on the next upgrade the moment it was available.  Immediately after I upgraded my pistol skill from "Advanced" to "Master", I felt like a badass, as I realized that I could actually move around and still maintain pitch-perfect accuracy with my chosen weapons.

Anyway, I think Deus Ex is clearly the better game to me, although HR is probably what I would expect that series to become with current gaming trends and the cost of making games these days.

As for the people in this thread saying that Deus Ex is "unplayable", I'd really like to know how far they got into the game before formulating that opinion.
