It comes down to Who you think makes the better RPGs and why...
Bioware vs Square Enix
Square. In fact, here's a present for BioWare:
Bioware, easy choice. Square isn't even top of the JRPG mountain anymore for me, last Final Fantasy I really enjoyed was VII. Bioware on the other hand still releases awesome classic feeling games [Dragon Age] as well as more modern stuff [Mass Effect 2].
Going by back catalouge is a little more difficult, as both companies have fantastic ones that contain many of my favourite games; I'd still pick Bioware but it's alot closer.
Hmm. Hard choice for me but I voted Square. I'm not voting for recent games though, cause I find that both Square and Bioware have come out with horribly dull games with dull characters to boot. This is all just opinion though so don't kill me, please. I couldn't get into Mass Effect cause I really didn't care for the boring characters in the game, same for Star Ocean. Last Bioware game I played was Jade Empire and when I think back on it, the characters were really dull. I don't know if anyone else is like me but I really look at character design when I buy a game, if I don't like the characters then I could care less what their goals are or what the game is about. Obviously gameplay will always come first to anything but at least a likable character will always draw me in that much quicker.
SquareEnix was better when they were just "Square". Bioware wins, in my opinion, as far are games made in the last half-decade or so.
Well I just voted for Bioware because of KotOR but after thinking about it wtf am I doing definitely Square.
Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Final Fantasy X had AMAZING stories I think just topping KotOR. The reason I put them above Bioware is because the other games (Mass Effect-trash story, Dragon Age-pretty good) don't come near the quality that was in those games. Now that FFXIII is coming out... the glory days are over.
I'm gonna say both, I have enough money not to have to choose one above the other and I can enjoy both equally, just in different ways.
Also on my list, Atlus.

Even if they had copied the system from FF12, the difference is that DA did it well, where as in FFXII it was a confusing, frustrating, unbalanced mess. Having to unlock the A.I. pramaters was just ridiculous. It didn't work, and it wasn't fun. Which is a shame, as I otherwise very much enjoyed the more political storyline that XII had, over the usual preteen melodrama we saw in the previous games.

The main problem with them for me is what you mentioned, the pre-teen melodrama stories that are generally in JRPGs. I can enjoy a JRPG if the story is not something where some unlikely pre-teen is randomly extremely powerful and saves the world." @VIGGO123 said:Dragon Age's battle system was more akin to Baldur's Gate, which was the whole point of DA.. BioWare, better stories, better characters, plus I prefer the BioWare style of gameplay to Square's more turn-based stuff

The same, both Dragon Age and FFXIII don't appeal to me all that much." I'm not voting for recent games though, cause I find that both Square and Bioware have come out with horribly dull games with dull characters to boot. This is all just opinion though so don't kill me, please."
Each of the two companies have their forte and neither one's games are perfect, so it is a tie. The same applying to Bethesda, as their games are great, but do get old rather quickly.
For me the best rpg houses are Runic Games, CD Projekt Red, Atlus, Mistwalker and Nippon Ichi. Followed closely by Vanillaware. Bioware and Square Enix are behemoths that live more from their credits with older games that with the recent ones.
No it doesn't. Have you played Baldur's Gate or is this just the talking point you take at face value? FF12's gambits are the foundation of Dragon Age's battle system, Baldur's Gate is about as primitive as Secret of Mana when it comes to action management and doesn't come even close to what DA is doing. Baldur's Gate is what they cited as one of many thematic inspirations, as well as George R R Martin(they came up really short in this regard). I don't like this petty disregard for a game that Dragon Age devs freely admit to being inspired by. I'd take their word on it over yours, thanks. I'll also take my fucking eyeballs over your assumption." @ryanwho said:

I'm gonna say Square Enix for just one reason. The World Ends With You. I don't really like jrpgs, but this, whoah.
I've played one Square RPG I liked, and that was Chrono Trigger. The idea of Final Fantasy is boring to me. Bioware has yet to create a game that I didn't enjoy. Jade Empire, while somewhat lacking in the combat department, had a great story. I think that was the first game I played through more than once. Mass Effect still stands as my favorite game ever (until Tuesday). I'm about 15 hours into Dragon Age: Origins and I love it.
" Square. In fact, here's a present for BioWare:I drudged through that whole game thinking it was going along so slow and everything was just so boring... until that fight. Then the game ended. So basically, if that fight wasn't in the game I would have hated it :P
Granted, I haven't played a single BioWare game, but THAT'S EXACTLY WHY I'M VOTING FOR SQUARE! "
