For a while now I've been wondering how exactly gaming news sites get the greenbacks to fund the site and all the costs that come with the job. Gaming is undoubtedly one expensive hobby, so how do you guys pay for all this great stuff? I can see how other sites are ad-based, but I rarely see an advertisement for anything on this site, so wheres the money come from?
But how do you buy the bombs?
"They midnight as train robbers."Really? Because I heard they're paid by big video game companies to assassinate world leaders :P.
Occasionally advertising, and the Giant Bomb Store.
Never thougjt of it. They have some expensive equipment In their office. And I guess the traveling, the servers, the gnomes who work upstairs and all that stuff isn't cheap. Good question indeed.
"They're a startup. They invest money at first, profits come later. Except to see more ads as the traffic for the site grows. The first step with any website is to build a loyal userbase, that takes time and money."This.
Any website that spams ads from day one without proving its content or supporting its users is doomed to fail. By not displaying ads for the short term they are actually making more money in the long term. Besides, it's common practice for venture capital agencies to allow at least 1-2 years of free development before requesting payments. I wouldn't be surprised if GB was still ad free a year from now.
"Meptron said:With the iPhone app they should start pulling some fresh cash, right? I wonder how long that could keep them ad-free..."They're a startup. Biff actually explained all this a long time ago in the millions of other similar threads:
"jakob187 said:Dood, with that manly 'stache and his ability to make the word "fuck" sound incredibly fun and awesome...you KNOW it's gotta be true."Biff actually explained all this a long time ago in the millions of other similar threads:Enough! You sold me."Ryan does porn..."
"They're a startup. They invest money at first, profits come later. Except to see more ads as the traffic for the site grows. The first step with any website is to build a loyal userbase, that takes time and money."Yeah, this is pretty much the case. Take a look at any major internet startup, like Twitter for instance, and you'll see them doing the same thing. They get a little funding from a VC or some other place to get started out, and then spend a while making a quality product, growing a user base, and building brand equity. Only after that do they decide how to monetize and make money.
They run coke across the border under the guise of a traveling taxidermy business. I mean, whose going to want to do a cavity search on a dead squirrel?!
"They midnight as train robbers."Isn't the phrase 'moonlight' or is this a yankee expression?
"Wow, there's a new post every month asking this question..."
There's a pet store in my town that no one goes in or out of, and by no one I mean the store gets no customers whatsoever. Yet, somehow, that pet store has managed to stay in business for years; all the while popular sports stores in my town, a town that is like a coke fiend for athletic competition, have shuttered their doors. Now someone explain that to me. Smells fishy...
*Eh-em* No pun intended.
"It is "moonlight." Though Midnight Train Robbers could be a pretty cool game."
That sounds like a porno.
I can definetly see the Quick Looks being some form of advertisement but the thing is they still say the truth about their opinion on what they are "looking at quickly". They were negative about RE5's multiplayer and Dragon Ball Evolution so that wouldn't be too great for advertising...
