hey I just finished playing legend of grimrock and really enjoyed it. I'd really like to get into some other party based CRPGs, not necessarily in that old school first person wizardry vein. What I liked most about grimrock was how accessible it was. a lot of other current day reiterations of old school genres, such as the avernum games, still feel really clunky and awkward. can anyone recommend a cheap party based or tactical CRPG that's quick and responsive and easy to get into?

Septerra Core. I'd say that fits your criteria; it's also 5.99 on GOG.

Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn are the definition of old school CRPG although they are not readily accessible. I recommend them wholeheartedly though.

Yah. These are good games but they can be pretty rough around the edges. Avenuem isn't the best place to start although it is a great game. People are going to find this strange. But I enjoyed dragon age 2 just as much as dragon age. I thought Da2 looked better and had more interesting charactures.

i played all the infinity engine games back in the day and really liked them, though in retrospect they probably arent all that accessible. Still they had a really good atmosphere somehow. I actually didnt like DA:O at all though, I thought the party members AI wasn't very good and it was frustrating to micromanage it, it just didn't feel as good as the infinity engine games. I never got that deep into a turn based game, like arcanum or fallout but ive been interested to give temple of elemental evil another shot, just wish there was a demo for it. I'll definitely look into Lands of Lore and Septerra Core, thanks for the recommendations.

I feel like you shot down the best recommendations. Lands of lore is an old adventure game mostly, and septerra core is just a standard RPG, although it'd probably be tough to play these days, it was awkward back then. Dragon Age: Origin was just like the older games in play style since to be the best you'd have to pause and issue commands, Fallout 1 and 2 were awesome games that still hold up well, tactics was good too but more mission based. Good luck, maybe try those games again if you don't want to play the infinity engine games.

If you're fresh from Grimrock and a bit of a masochist, maybe try Eye of the Beholder. If you're not into that hardcore of an experience, Betrayal at Krondor is a bit less mean to players, plus the story is pretty deep.
