Hey everyone,

For a class I'm teaching, I'm going to be having students record "Let's Play" videos (or, as we know them here, Quick Looks). In preparation for this, I want to screen for my students a Giant Bomb Quick Look, so everyone knows what these things look and sound like.

I was hoping I could count on the Giant Bomb community to nominate a handful of classic Quick Looks for me to choose from. I could go from my own memory, but why trust it when I can ask folks for their input?

Ideally, the Quick Look would be accessible, entertaining, and between 20 and 40 minutes. Accessibility is pretty important here: the game should be pretty easy to understand for someone completely unfamiliar with its genre, and I'd prefer that the commentary wasn't dripping with inside jokes and dirty language. Nothing against inside jokes or dirty language on their own: again, I'm just interested in accessibility.

Thanks!

Hey man, please keep in mind that a "Let's play" is totally different from a Quick Look. A "Let's Play" is usually a series played by a person with a lot of familiarity with the game, OR they are playing a brand new game through. A Quick Look is intended to be just that, a quick video of the game to give you an idea of what it is like with limited familiarity of the game. I'd say to make sure that your students know which of these you want. Depending on the age of the group I'd recommend the following Quick Looks:

http://www.giantbomb.com/videos/quick-look-simanimals/2300-192/ - Pretty simplistic game where Ryan talks about what he is doing
http://www.giantbomb.com/videos/quick-look-dj-hero-2/2300-3401/ - This is one that incorporates video of them actually playing the game to help you understand the controls
http://www.giantbomb.com/videos/quick-look-super-scribblenauts/2300-3375/ - It's scribblenauts, and open ended
http://www.giantbomb.com/videos/quick-look-okabu/2300-5086/ - Just a cute game where they play it
http://www.giantbomb.com/videos/quick-look-ex-wreckateer/2300-6321/ - A game where the developer is brought in

You probably still want to screen these since I didn't watch the whole thing.

I have a few of what I would call "classic" quick looks. What I mean by that is they are old (they're all from 2009 when they really hit their stride), they're one's anyone that wants to get into Giant Bomb in general should see, and they're probably the most entertaining.

Obviously there are other ones (they've been funny for years and much like Rifftrax they evolve their craft but always continue to entertain so everyone has a different favorite), but these are the most classic imo.

If you're doing a class you should keep in mind that the best "Let's Plays" aren't always funny. Giant Bomb's tends to be on that level, but there are great "Let's Plays" out there that are just informative or interesting and don't really even tackle it from the vantage point of being funny. So, really, it's just about having something interesting to say- whether it be funny or just informative it all works if you do it well and you actually have something to say about the game. I only mention this because being funny is not always something someone is good at and they don't have to be. It's actually where a lot of Let's Players fail; they think they have to be funny when they aren't (I know this is subjective, but fundamentally it's true). Patrick got pretty good at doing informative Quick Looks, for example, in my opinion.

That's just my viewpoint, though. Enjoy!

PS if the Leisure Suit Larry quick look is considered too "dirty" there's also this Harry Potter one from 2009 that's also a classic
