I've been playing GTAIV and I have to say that, even though it's only three years old, it feels like something from the PS2 era. The gun play is unsatisfying and plodding to such a point that I'm pretty sure I've had more visceral water gun fights before. Also, the damn friend/cell phone system is one of the most obnoxious features in any game I've ever played and the lack of any sort of mission checkpointing (something that was actually better in San Andreas, with the "skip drive sequence" option) is really, really frustrating.

What other current generation games do you think have aged terribly?

I popped in Red Dead Redemption the other day (which is one of my favourite games of all time) after not having played it for well over a year, and damn, that game is UGLY. Of course if you're talking mechanics wise, and not just graphics, then pretty much all launch or first year games of this gen have aged pretty badly...

I've played RDR recently but I don't think it's quite as ugly as you make it out to be. The character models aren't great, but the landscapes, weather effects, and sky can be very pretty.

Generally speaking, I think RDR is pretty lo-fi in terms of graphics, but its art design is something special.

I've been spending tons of time on my PS2 lately, though, so...

I don't think that's because of aging... the cutscenes in that game were awful (looking) when it was new. That said though, I loved ODST.

It's not even running on the Unreal Engine 3, is it? Isn't on something like version 2.5?

@BaneFireLord: GTAIV had all those problems when it was released. It has nothing to do with aging.

I disagree on Oblivion, though after 11/11/11, it will be hard to defend it. I would say GTA IV and Heavenly Sword.

Red Dead is one of the best looking games of recent years to me artistically and technically but to be honest Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2 haven't aged very well.

I´ll have to say Halo 3 even tough I enjoy that game quite a bit it was looking kinda old when it was released also Prototype but I didn´t like the way that game looked so I won´t say more , GTA IV to me looks fine the character models may not the the strong of that game but the city landscape and car models do look great compared to older GTA games I said IV is the one that has aged the best.

GTA4- the targeting system, the save system EVERYTHING!  (compare to RDR)

Dead Rising - Dead Island have out-DeadRising Dead Rising

Uncharted 1 - Good banter aside, the gunplay feels .. underwhelming.

Resistance 1 -  Great setup, but poor level design and a archaic health system makes this game a hassle to play.

PDZ - I love Ms. Dark but PDZ literally a PS2-era FPS

I agree, its amazing how much improved the sequel was.

RDR was never a fantastic looking game honestly.

Assassins Creed 1 is another game that hasn't aged well.

Speaks simply to how much improvement we've seen this gen.

It didn't feel that way, it WAS that way.

Anyway, I think one game that hasn't aged that well graphically is the first Uncharted. To be more specific, the character models. There are points in that game where Drake looks straight up unfinished. I'm going to say that Dead Rising's gameplay has aged very poorly. Then again, that game was always sort of fucked, so it might just be that time has taught us how terrible it really was.

Am I missing something why some of you didn´t like GTA IV targeting system? I thought they handle the auto-target pretty well at least way better than GTA : San Andreas, it was fast and responsive from what I remember and the crosshair wasn´t a tiny dot that you could loss out of sight on the screen like in the Red Dead Redemption.

I just went back and played through GTA 4 LaD on PC and personally thought it helped up quite well, though it helped that you have much better shooting control on the mouse than the 360 controller (I played both ways and highly preferred the mouse+keyboard setup).

Completely agree with this. The only thing I enjoyed doing was the Dark Brotherhood quest line because it was fun to sneak around and shoot dudes in the spine with arrows.

I would have to say Uncharted hasn't aged well but thats only when in comparison to Uncharted2. I tried to replay it recently and was quickly reminded that the enemies are huge sponges and the god awful grenade aim using the Sixaxis. Its still great but its now in the shadow of U2.

Mass Effect- Its graphic was amazing when it came out. However, looking back in today's standards, it has weak lighting, texture pop-in, unstable frame rate......

The gameplay aged even worse than the graphic. Clumsy menu/inventory, underwhelming shooting, stupid planet exploration.

I don't know why, but while thinking about some of the problems of Mass Effect, I suddenly think of Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Although it is a new game. I think it isn't going to age well, either.

Grand Theft Auto IV definitely hasn't aged well. When it was first released I was amazed at how well it played compared to the PS2 games, it's really hard to return to now, though. The cellphone and checkpointing were always issues, though.

Tried to get back into Oblivion the other day after watching some Skyrim videos, all I did was ruin my great memories of the game, the animations, the UI, the lack of voice variety, the faces, oh God the faces, they're all ten times worse than I remember. It still felt awesome to go to the top of a hill, look out over miles of landscape and then head off into it so it has got me syked up for Skyrim at least.

Got to disagree about GTA4, I still play through that regularly and its as good as it ever was, maybe though its because I haven't had a long break from it to have that effect.

Put me in for GTAIV. I've been trying to finish it, but damn, that game is such a slog. I replayed MGS4 recently, and that is still just fantastic. It's kind of weird to think that those two were the ones duking it out for GB's GOTY when in retrospect one just seems so much better than the other.

But I am told that opinions, they are like assholes.

Yeah... /thread. Of course, that's also one of the few Greg Kasavin reviews I actively disagree with. The others are KotOR 2 and now Deus Ex Invisible War. Otherwise, the man was probably my favorite reviewer back in the "Good old days"

Basically any launch game for either the 360 or PS3 works. Even Oblivion, a game that blew my mind when I was 14, certainly doesn't look so hot anymore, regardless of whatever weird posthumous internet backlash it and every other bethesda game have received in the recent years.
