IN THIS BLOG:

Pretty rad to see that someone at G4 enjoyed the game enough that they were more than willing to air a review that gave it 4 out of 5.

This makes me realize two things:
  1. I wish I could get even $20 at this point freed up to finally buy a fucking copy of the game
  2. The internet is fucking retarded sometimes.

Okay, maybe I've known the latter for some time, but it's always amazing to me how there will be one subject that comes along every so often that causes beet-red faces to stare at computer screens and nerd-rage.  At the same time, there's also those people who like to poke and prod when they don't even need to do it.  They just feel the need to be jerk-offs about something.

I know that feeling.  I can be that jerk-off sometimes, as many of you know and realize.  When I first came to these forums, I was called a "troll" many times.  The mods got onto me plenty of times, but one of my own problems was that I didn't realize I was trolling or anything of the sort.  I was relatively unfamiliar to forums, and so I figured I was just having some hearty debates.  What little I knew...  After over 11,000 posts (and that's not including when I was 0 glitched...which reportedly sets me over 14,000 according to Snail), I've found my way of handling situations as well as just generally being me on the internet without getting yelled at too often for it.  I still jump into the occasional piss-storm of fuming anger and unnecessary bitching, but I've found a better way to construct what I say in order to fuel good and healthy debate, not simply say "fuck you and what you like".

Single-handedly the most hated and loved man of the year so far.
Single-handedly the most hated and loved man of the year so far.
This brings me back around to the topic at hand:  Deadly Premonition.  The game has been getting great reviews for the most part, but it has caused such a great divide between gamers.  On one side, you have the fuckers that feel the need to praise the game among high and shine it on everyone in the gaming world like it's Jesus Incarnate, all the while spouting "look past its flaws and see its greatness".  Looking at the other side, it's filled with fuckers that feel the need to piss all over the game (most of which having not actually played it at all, but merely claiming that watching the ER was enough for them to make this conclusion).  They spout off that bad game design makes it a bad game, and when someone tries to defend it, they get all uppity about it.

Frankly, folks - both of those sides...are acting like fucking idiots.  While this could go back to the tried-and-true ideal of "fanboy vs. troll", it's NOT.  It's about people who love a game despite its flaws vs. people who don't love the game.  So, I feel it's pertinent to the idea of healthy debate as well as general courtesy (something that the internet lacks, we know, but it's always worth some kind of proverbial "shot") that I point out very bluntly and obviously the issues here.

So...here ya go:

THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE DEFENDING DEADLY PREMONITION:  You seriously need to sit back for a second and stop acting like complete idiots.  Everyone knows that the gameplay mechanics, graphics, some of the tedious systems, the combat...there's a lot of poor design choices in this game.  This is a game that folks LIKE and ENJOY.  If any other game had the same kind of issues that this game has without an endearing story and crazy characters, etc etc...if it didn't have the charm it exhibits, then it would be getting low-end reviews and people would call it forgettable.  Just look at Lost Planet 2 at the moment.  Poor design is STILL poor design.  With that said, I am thoroughly anticipating the day that I'll actually be able to buy a copy of this thing so I can get in on the madness and insanity of it, as well as enjoy myself a little.  So, let the trolls be trolls, let them whine and bitch about how they don't agree with your opinion.  You aren't going to convert them into agreeing with your opinion of the game...especially when they are completely unwilling to even plug the game in themselves and play it...yet still sit at a distance and talk shit about it because they watch the Endurance Run.  =  /

THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE BASHING DEADLY PREMONITION OR THOSE DEFENDING IT:  Shut the fuck up!  We get it - you don't think the game is good, and you want to hate on anyone that enjoys it.  You've got the bigger dick, and you feel the need to wave it around in the mirror.  Very few people will deny that the game features archaic design choices for controls, graphics, gameplay, etc.  THAT IS NOT WHY THEY LIKE THE GAME!  They like the story, the characters, the atmosphere, and the general weirdness of the game.  THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT!  Some of you will say "these idiots need to understand that they are calling it a good game, but it's a bad game because it's designed poorly".  That's called subjective opinion.  When a review is made about a game, it means that a critic is looking at the package AS A WHOLE and giving it a review and a grade.  Apparently, MANY people have agreed that the relatively lacking design choices can easily be dealt with (meaning that the game is not unplayable by any means) and overlooked in some cases because, SURPRISE, there is something charming about everything in it.  MOREOVER, you guys need to realize that THIS IS A BUDGET TITLE, PRICED AT $20.  It means the company who developed it did not have a Gears of War-styled budget over $100 million dollars.  The fact that a budget title has gotten this kind of exposure and general fanfare is surprising and amazing to see, and while I also haven't played the game myself, I'm not going to be so goddamn narrow-minded as to act like an asshole to everyone about it because I feel I have a bone to pick on a fucking internet forum.

IN THE END, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
Those of you who enjoy the game, go forth and enjoy the game.  When someone feels the need to troll about it, shut the fuck up and continue to discuss how much you enjoy the game.  It's called "ignoring folks".  Practice it once in a while, and shut the fuck up with all the goddamn bickering.

Is this really the type of mentality you folks want to have about this shit?
Is this really the type of mentality you folks want to have about this shit?
Those of you who want to shit on those who like the game...as well as the game itself...a small lesson:  going into any thread or post about Deadly Premonition IS PURELY OPTIONAL!  You don't HAVE to say a fucking word, but you do anyways.  Here's an idea:  stop being an unnecessary fucking agitator.

I know, I know.  "Thanks for pointing out the obvious, Captain Obvious".  I'm not looking to save the goddamn internet, but I am willing to point out when people are acting fucking stupid and tell them "HEY, PIPE IT THE FUCK DOWN UP THERE" while I beat on the ceiling with the handle of my broom.

That's all I can do.  I'm not defending the game - the design choices do look incredibly flawed.  However, I'm also not going to act like a dick to everyone enjoying the game.  Instead, I'll try to put it to them as intelligently as possible and point out that while the game has its charms and this enjoyable air of weirdness to it, the game is flawed and is therefore not perfect.

Until next time...piece.

P.S. - I know that I've blogged about Deadly Premonition and the weird situation that surrounds it.  This originally started as a reply to the thread about the XPlay review, but it eventually grew into more than just a comment.  Funny how words take on a life of their own in the strangest of times...

P.S.S. - I will have a big revamping and updating to my blog format as of next week.  Hope you guys are looking forward to it, as I know I am.  I think people will enjoy the title of the blog.  = D

In this case, I have to side with the fanboys, because at least they played the game. You just don't render opinions on games you haven't played, OK?

As someone who has not played the game and therefore have no opinion on the matter. It seems to me its the Deadly Premonition haters that usually start the trouble.

I totally agree with what you're saying. Some of the bitching needs to stop, especially when most of us here haven't even played the game and are going by what they see on the Endurance Run... and vice versa.

I've always thought Deadly Premonition would be suited better as a TV show or movie. As a game it looks terrible, but the parts of the game where you're not actually playing certainly has its weird charm. The story is way out there, but it is certainly entertaining.

You know, I think you got that divide a bit wrong.  I'm enjoying it BECAUSE of all the terrible stuff along with the hilarious/interesting dialogue.  Either I'm laughing at this game or it is genuinly interesting.  I won't say it is good, but if it was a little bit better, I would wager I would like it less.

Yes. DP does what it does well, and I love it for it's strengths rather than hate it for it's weaknesses.

Unfortunately many feel entitled to damn things that they think or know they won't like. People just go to threads to mouth an opinion, whether or not it contributes anything  to the discussion. In their minds, their own experiences should be shared by everyone else. I think there needs to be a realisation that this is a games forum and people generally want to discuss games they enjoy or are interested in and if you aren't then you should focus on the games you yourself are interested in.
Of course, some people just enjoy trolling -_-

Anyone who doesn't have $20 needs to reevaluate their life and get a better job.

See, that's trolling. Saying 'I hate DP and you fuckers are going off the deep end praising it to the hilt' is not trolling.

I personally like that game, especially the ending sequence (eps 5+6). But it seems like you're way too harsh on those who genuinely don't like the game.

The way I see it, the people that like the game only look at the charm it has. The people that dislike the game look at gameplay mechanics and the archaic visuals.

I like it because it's FUN. I don't give a flying fuck about the controls and visuals (And.. the controls aren't fucking awful by the way, they're just not great), I just enjoy playing the game, because as a whole, it's a bunch of fun.

Awesome write up dude...

As for me, I started off hating the game...hated it like nothing else and assumed anyone who defended it to be morons and not worth my time.  However as it's got on...there's something about it.  So now, I'm in the middle ground...there's something about the game that makes it awesome but you have to look past a fair few flaws to see that...

So both ends of the spectrum are wrong but when is that not the case?

It seems like the game is PACKED with stuff, and then at the same time, reuses things so much.

But I am totally compelled by the footage. I watch them all. I can't stop.

I think that the issue with really hyping this game up, which technically is bad, is that there are plenty of games being released right now that are "good-good" and not just ironically "so bad its good, good".  There are great games that more deserve our time and money. The other thing that it bugs me is when people like things ironically. How long can you go around ironically liking things you think are dumb before you become unable to tell what you genuinely like anymore?

Mostly because the defenders only answer the haters. No one is making "ZOMG THIS GAME IS SO GOOD!!!!!!!" topics, yet people who hate Deadly Premonition are writing threads/posts where they either play Captain Obvious and educate the masses how the game has poor gameplay (no shit) or call others fuckwads for liking it, also blasting the GB staff for making an Endurance Run of it.

I've had little interest in the game and couldn't really commit to watching all the episodes of ER, but I was a bit annoyed at first when everyone started bandwagoning the game once the ER came out. It just felt like they were trying to kiss the staff's asses.

Yeah it's truly amazing how divisive this game is... Personally I loved my playthrough, but the clunky mechanics mean I am not inclined to play through it ever again (which sucks, because the difficulty achievements don't freaking stack).  I think there are definitely people who are defending this game because it is so popular right now, but I would say that the ERs really showed me how crazy this game is, so I was drawn in.

Also, OP, it's P.P.S. (Post postscript), not P.S.S.

@Supermarius: Thing is, many of the people who like it actually think it's a good game(like me) and aren't just liking it ironically.

@Everyones_A_Critic: Yeah, most of the people who like it on this site only like it because of the ER. I remember when Jeff first hinted at the ER, most of the people on this site were trashing the game. Then once the ER started, every started to like DP.

This is all of course true, and Deadly Premonition has proven to be one of the extreme points, even though any subject that could possibly be the subject of more than one opinion (that is to say; any subject at all), will always be susceptible to ever-burning flames of Internet rage. There should be (and knowing the Internet, there definitely is) a Rule 34-equivalent pertaining to this; that any subject, no matter how small, irrelevant or positive in its nature, can and will inspire someone to waste time attacking/defending it in the most rageful manner possible, through as many media that that someone has at their disposal...

...The pot of gold we healthy few strive towards is of course the mythical Healthy and Respectful Debate, and as much as I enjoy seeing people writing things like this and providing more, always necessary, proof of the existence of sound minds on the Internet, it won't do any good I'm afraid. The only viable options with chance of success is to either institute a testing process with exams that people must go through to qualify for Internet usage, or just to start a global lobotomisation process...

Gaah, I know I'm part of the problem, but then again, so are we all, and I guess that's the only way of reaching it...

Whenever a thread about DP gets off the ground, it always gets bogged down by people  saying: ''OMG this game is terrible.''.And the people trying to suck up to the staff, would share the same opinion as them(they don't really like the game).
