Persona 3: FES (make sure its the FES version) for a unique experience, Dragon Quest also a great JRPG, beautifully done. If you can, both. If you have to choose one, DQ if you played Persona 4 or Persona 3 if you never played one at all.
Honestly, both are pretty hard to get through, but P3:FES will last much longer. If you're into fantasy and all that stuff, get DQVIII, but if you're looking for a JRPG out of the norm, get P3:FES.
I've never played any of the Persona series, but DQVIII was good. But it's main flaw is definitely it's length. The game is too simple for a game that long. Even if it was more complex, it would suffer from its length. It feels like the plot is being stretched out at many points. At least, to me.
Dragon Quest VIII, no question. It's probably one of the best games I've ever played. I picked it up recently and I've loved every second of it. Of course, I used to play Dragon Warrior on the NES all the time as a kid, so I'm already really into the Dragon Quest series.
I'd say Dragon Quest VIII is in my top ten games, so I highly recommend it.
If there is any possible way, try and get both. I have both and love them completely. Okay, neither is perfect but the joy I've had while playing them far out weighs any short comings. I'm 154 hours of in-game game play of part "A" of P3 FES and loving it. DQ VIII is fantastic as well and one of the principle reasons I prefer that series over the more popular FF titles.
If you can only swing 1 right now, I suggest FES but get VIII as soon as possible afterwards. Also, look for the P3 soundtrack edition, if you are buying it new. It costs the same in alot of places as the plain edition. If you are getting it used, the OST can be acquired online, too.
