Despite being a computer guy, I've got no idea what the best method to get an avi or mp4 file onto a dvd-player usable dvd is. What is the easiest free method available?

Insert an empty disk, right click the file, press burn?

Personally, I use IMGBurn. It's free and it works very well for me. Most, but not all DVD players to my knowledge will only use DVD-RW discs. For some reason, they will not read DVD-R. IMGBurn is extremely easy to use. Just install it, and then write files to disc. Find the files, add them to the disc, and burn. It should work for you. I've been able to burn audio CDs with this program and play them on my CD Player (using CD-RW, as CD-R doesn't seem to work for me either).

I tried DVDflick and it told me that my mp4 file didn't have any usable video feed, which it does, so that one is unfortunately out.

I'm also trying to use imgburn, but it needs the file in a DVD readable and burnable format first, which it unfortunately doesn't do.

Lol you like giving obvious answers, don't you Sherlock? And I would also like to know which free DVD burner programs are good.

Bingo. I'll give it a read at work and see if I can come up with a working solution. Thanks Claude! "
Don't thank me, thank Whiskey Media. But you're welcome, hope it works. "
I just read the article. Unfortunately it was about ripping rather than burning, which is mostly what I'm concerned with. Still looking for suggestions!

Handbrake prepares them, then you can just stick 'em on with Toast.

Maybe doom9.org has what you need. I used google in the past to
find some tool to convert some format of divx or xvid into an avi
in order to watch a movie on my iPod last year.

I use ConvertXtoDVD
Works like a charm, compatible with ALL formats I have used (MP4 included)
The trial is free, But it does cost money for the full version
....Of course if your so inclined you can easily find a cracked version (Cracked versions are illegal btw...)

Convertxtodvd was the way to go. Strangely though my mp4 was converted and burned without the audio track. Not sure why.
