I got to thinking recently, what are my favorite games of each generation?

I looked at how generations were defined on Wikipedia, and kinda shot from the hip to come up with a list. I’m curious what others have to say, so please share.

Generation 1 - Pong

Generation 2 - Warlords

Generation 3 - River City Ransom

Generation 4 - Shadowrun (Genesis)

Generation 5 - Virtual Pro Wrestling 2

Generation 6 - Halo: Combat Evolved

Generation 7 - The Last of Us

Generation 8 - Witcher 3

Gen5: Mario 64
Gen6: Final Fantasy X
Gen7: Valkyria Chronicles
Gen8: I'm not sure yet. We'll say Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

I don't know where to put Pokemon Red/Green/Blue/Yellow and StarCraft + Brood War.

I picked the games that were my favourites from each gen that I had, or at the very least played a lot of at the time of the generation.

Gen 1 - Breakout (Pong with no friends)

Gen 2 - Pitfall! (Or the "Indiana Jones Game" as it was known in our house)

Gen 3 - Prince of Persia

Gen 4 - Super Metroid

Gen 5 - Wipeout

Gen 6 - Genuinely can't separate between Wind Waker and Halo: CE, despite how different they are, as a favourite from this gen.

Gen 7 - ahhhhh, even tougher. Fallout New Vegas if a gun was pointed at me...

Gen 8 - I only have a Switch from this gen, so probably BotW, with the caveat that there are Xbox and PlayStation games from this gen that I might have liked more if I'd had a chance to play them.

One of those lists where the choices for each consecutive category got gradually more difficult until the last generation where age meant I know of the games but have a distinct lack of hands on experience with them.

I've been primarily PC so this is a little weird but...
Gen 1: Yellow River Kingdom (i think) - BBC Micro
Gen 2: Nothing really fits
Gen 3: New Zealand Story - Master System
Gen 4: Streets of Rage 2 - Mega Drive
Gen 5: Metal Gear Solid - PS1 (Big shoutouts to Tekken 2, Gran Turismo, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Operation Winback)
Gen 6: Max Payne - PC (Massive shout outs to MGS2, Half life, Counter Strike and Shenmue, best generation)
Half Life 2 would be here as it came out during this generation, but PC hardware was so far ahead at this point it's not fair
Gen 7: Oblivion - PC (There are an absurd number of games worth putting here i don't even feel comfortable with what i did pick)
Gen 8: Metal Gear Solid 5 - PC (This one was kind of easy)

Yeah, the generation thing gets really weird when it comes to home computers, which have basically been around the whole time but computer games were basically an entirely different thing than "tv games" up until the 90s. There was a thread last year with "favorite games by decade", which was a bit easier, I think, since you could actually pick arcade and mainframe games from the 70s for that, but I'll try to stick to console games or at least games that were also available on console.

  1. Combat (Coleco Telstar Combat)
  2. Missile Command
  3. Elite
  4. Wing Commander
  5. Command & Conquer
  6. Deus Ex
  7. Crysis
  8. Civilization VI (or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but Civ VI is on Switch now at least)

There would be some slight differences if it was more open to computer games, but I already have that listed in that other thread I linked to.

  6. Halo: Combat Evolved
  7. Dust: An Elysian Tale
  8. This generation isn't done yet, so I'll just leave Hollow Knight as a placeholder.

@liquiddragon: I just kinda looked at what Wikipedia had for generations. I’m not so dogmatic, myself, so....wherever you want?

There’s always the handheld and PC conundrum. ;)

EDIT: And, goddamn, good call with Street Fighter. I love the living hell out of Shadowrun on the Genesis, but Street Fighter 2 is really on another level.

Ok, I'll play. My list is largely based on what I'd still want to play (or am currently playing) today, not necessarily what I thought was the best game at the time. Also, for the lazy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_home_video_game_consoles

Generation 1 - N/A

Generation 2 - Combat

Generation 3 - Contra

Generation 4 - Final Fantasy 6

Generation 5 - Symphony of the Night

Generation 6 - This is a tough one... Burnout 3

Generation 7 - Borderlands 2. Honorable mention, since it will likely never be made again, NCAA Football '14

Generation 8 - DOOM

Man Generation 7 has to be the best of the lot. Sure games are better and better all the time, but to look back at the number of epic franchises that got started and evolved during that time... pretty special.

1st Gen - N/A. I wasn't alive at the time and these games mostly weren't playable when I was old enough.

2nd Gen - Space Invaders. I had a hard time picking between this and Galaga.

3rd Gen - Super Mario 3. Peak NES, and peak Mario. Enough said.

4th Gen - Super Mario Kart. Ghost Valley forever.

5th Gen - Goldeneye. This is a goddamn classic and I won't hear otherwise.

6th Gen - Halo: CE. Quite possibly the greattest game ever made. It still 100% holds up.

7th Gen - Red Faction: Guerrilla. It was either this or Burnout: Revenge, but I've played RF: G more and it has aged better.

8th Gen - HITMAN. This is a virtually perfect video game. It's probably my favorite of all.
