The only JRPGs I played on SNES as a kid were Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG, and both of those games have individual songs for each town and dungeon. I'm curious, what's the first game that started that trend?

First one off the top of my head was Ultima 4. Then I looked it up and apparently Ultima 3 had separate tracks for Dungeon and Town. I know it's not a JRPG, but it no doubt influenced the genre.

I'm sure someone else can think of a pre-1983 game with distinct songs for dungeon and overworld though.

My gut tells me that it was most likely one of the Dragon Quest titles but I honestly can't think of that many really old-school JRPG that have individual tracks for every single town and dungeon. A lot of times there is just one "town theme" and "dungeon theme".
