Poll Forza Horizon 5 or Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown - Which coming up open-world arcade racer that you're more interested in? (68 votes)

Forza Horizon 5 68%
Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown 10%
Why not both? 16%
Neither 6%

Dear open-world driving game fans!

Here are the two games that I'm anticipated to see how will they go in terms of development, I'm expecting that Playground Games and Kylotonn both will heavily improve over their respective predecessor in terms of gameplay, events, A.I opponents and various features, so I want to see you guys show your early thoughts and opinions.

  • Platforms: Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC
  • In-game country setting: Mexico
  • Release date: November 9th, 2021
  • Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch
  • In-game country setting: Hong Kong, China
  • Release date: September 22nd, 2022

P.S I'm unsure what other in-game countries will Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown include, just like in Test Drive Unlimited 2 had Ibiza and Hawaii.

In the near future, I don't think that I will make a thread of comparison between Gran Turismo 7 and Forza Motorsport Reboot because I'm worried about the arguments that will happen on this website plus I've seen a lot of toxic rivalry fan arguments between Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport franchise across the internet which they all act like 12-year-olds, as they made it way too notorious.

If I want to create a new thread of Gran Turismo 7 and Forza Motorsport Reboot on the general discussion board, I'd rather do appreciation threads for both in the near future.

Not to mention that I've seen a lot of users comparing Forza Horizon 5 to Gran Turismo 7 which doesn't seem to make any sense because one is an open-world arcade racer and the other one is a simcade circuit racer (Both feature totally different gameplay).

I want apples to apples, not apples to oranges these days.

Need the good examples of comparisons on the racing/driving game IPs that make sense? why not compare:

  • Gran Turismo to Forza Motorsport or Enthusia Professional Racing
  • Assetto Corsa Competizione to iRacing or rFactor 2 or Automobilista 2
  • WRC to DiRT Rally
  • Forza Horizon to Test Drive Unlimited or The Crew
  • F-Zero to Fast RMX
  • WipEout to Quantum Redshift or Pacer
  • Mario Kart to Crash Team Racing or Sonic Racing or Chocobo Racing

Because of having the same sub-genre from each dot point.

Edit: If you're curious about racing games' handling model leaning towards either simulator or arcade in terms of ratio, you should check out Viperconcept's Racing Games chart series on YouTube.

Forza for sure. Solar Crown could be cool, but it's been a long time since the last game happened and mostly new people are working on the next. Could be they bring something fresh to the table, or they could just be left in the dust by a dev with more experience and a bigger budget.

Hopefully both turn out well.

I don't want to be mean, but there's really no contest here. I hope both games are good, but there's only one of them we can safely assume will be.

FH5 is in a franchise with a proven recent track record from a reliable developer. On the flip side, it's been ten years since the last TDU and the developer has spent the past decade cranking out games that mostly fall in the range of mediocre to bad.

@chaser324: @judaspete: This game is being developing the team behind the recent, excellent, WRC games. I’m not going to tell you they are on the same level as Playground or Codemasters, but they are very highly regarded in the Rally world and have been making racing games for nearly 10 years, none of which were bad. So not sure where this talk is coming from.

@raven10: The most recent efforts on WRC 8 and 9 have been a pretty significant improvement, but I can't really agree that they've never made a bad game.

Hopefully the more recent track record is what they carry into the new TDU, but it's certainly less of a sure thing than FH5.

I was just curious about players on which one they will prefer more so I decided to make this poll, the last Test Drive installment was Ferrari Racing Legends, released back on July 3rd, 2012 for consoles and December 12, 2012, for PC.

How Test Drive Ferrari Racing Legends got heavily criticized? because the community was expecting it to be a sim racer then it turned out to be an arcade racer as the developer rushed it by reusing Need For Speed Shift 2: Unleashed's driving model in order to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Ferrari 125 S (The first car that Ferrari has ever made).

Yep, it appears that Playground Games is a bigger company than Kylotonn.

I’m sure FH5 will be awesome, but I’m kind of looking forward to seeing what TD will be like. I played a lot of TDU and loved it. I’m just happy to see two big games coming out in the genre.

Test Drive Unlimited 1 was such a great experience and Forza Horizon obviously took a lot from that formula. However TDU2 left a bad taste in my mouth when it reset my progress twice, and then the casino dlc that was implemented also glitched out my money. I'm ready to be impressed but I know what I'm going to get with FH5 whereas TDU3 has a huge hill to climb.

Plus it helps that FH5 is Game Pass day one so I don't need to buy it and take that chance.

Test Drive Unlimited 2's handling feels stiffer than the first game, probably they had different members in the physics development team in Eden Studios.

For myself, I personally choose to buy Forza Horizon 5 instead of going for Game Pass, because I'm more used to buying games in general though.

Forza Horizon and Test Drive Unlimited are both my favorite open-world arcade racing game IPs.

While I'm waiting for both to be released, this is something I would like to listen to.

This soundtrack was used in the TDU2 Mercedes trailer.

I think the horizon games are boring and sterile, though the driving is great. TDU was similarly sterile but I'd be excited for what they do with it in 2021

Okay, fair enough, because you're not really into open-world arcade racers or arcade racers in general?

Test Drive Unlimited for sure. Loved the first one, then TDU2 felt off somehow both in the driving and the presentation. But I've only played the first Forza Horizon, because it didn't really hook me and I haven't tried any of the later ones. TDU has been dormant for so long that I'm curious to see what a different team and newer hardware will result in.

@gtxforza: I love The Crew 2, burnout paradise, used to be way into midnight club, it's the lack of purpose in the Forza games that bum me out. TDU was never really praised so my stance does not make me anti racing game.

@sahalarious: All good, I was just curious.

For me, I'm still neutral in between Forza Horizon and Test Drive Unlimited series but I definitely prefer these 2 over Need For Speed and Midnight Club series.

However, I'm more interested in BTCC 2022 game, Gran Turismo 7 and Forza Motorsport Reboot.
