Hi! So after a while of playing MOBAs and some FPSs, I've recently decided to go back to MMORPGs to see if the genre is really as dead as people are saying. So for starters I would like to get some opinions on your favourite FREE MMORPG(s) to make things easier for me to pick. Thanks for the help! ^^

Final Fantasy XIV has a free trial that lets you level up to 30, there's a subscription if you decide you want to stick with it but I felt like I had to recommend it because it's among my favorite MMOs ever.

As for totally free games I enjoyed Star Wars: The Old Republic and Tera the most. There's a console port in the works for Tera as well if that's up your alley.

I've always tried getting into MMOs but always get bored because of the repetiviness and bad story compared to single player games but besides the games already mentioned I did like Guild Wars 2 for awhile. It used to be buy it once and then play forever with no subscription. I believe they even made it completely free after awhile.

You can play WoW for free up to level 20, I personally have never found a better mmo. I cant recommend The Old Republic. Its true you can play the whole game for free but unless you bought the game in the past, youre still gonna have to fork over some cash to get extremely basic things like multiple hot bars. Neverwinter Nights was designed as a free to play mmo and its pretty decent for what it is. I would choose either Neverwinter Nights or WoW up to level 20.

@tilenm: Best thing I found is download a few & limit to a few hours (max 3) on each, see what grabs you & go from there. GLHB!

@blannir: I am currently playing Tera and I have to say I am not enjoying it as I thought I would. I might give FF XIV a try though. Thanks for the tip!

@dagas: hmm. I can't say I completely disahre. That's why I am searching for something different. Ashes of Creation and Albion Online might be the stuff the MMORPG world needs right now.

@tilenm: As it hasn't been mentioned, I'll point out that The Secret World is getting relaunched as F2P at the end of the month (26th, I think?). As far as MMO stories/writing go, it easily tops everything else on the market. It's a really cool and unique (for MMOs at least) world that focuses more on the real world with some supernatural elements.

Not sure how much 3 hours of an MMO can really tell you. You can get a general feel for a game in 3 hours (at least for some games), but that's not a great indicator for many MMOs that have a somewhat sluggish beginning and/or are more focused on endgame content.
