What games were you genuinely excited for, but stopped careing about eventually beacuse development took too long?
The Last Guardian, Firefall and Interstellar Marines are a few games that comes to my mind.

I'm not as excited for Star Wars: Battlefront 3 as I once was, but perhaps when we see some footage that excitement will be revitalized.
None that come to mind. I've basically stopped watching preview coverage or trailers for everything. I have no hype for anything so I haven't lost interest in anything. I wait for the buzz around launch.
The Wii U, right off the bat I was excited for it but as I saw more footage, had more time to think about it I decided not to get one. That shit was at 2 E3's, new consoles should be at 1 E3 then released.
EDIT: For an actual game, MGR. Was so excited when that was announced but nothing was said for 2 years, then it came back up and I wasn't interested anymore. Even Jeff talking about the game doesn't get me excited. Maybe I'm jaded.
@hermes: I'm totally with you on FF Verses/FF15 or whatever the hell Square is calling it this week. What, 5 years in development by now?
@jordanpaul: Well it was announced in May 2006. So about EIGHT YEARS.
If we forget about that one obvious choice...nothing anymore, really. I recall being quite interested in Prey 2 and even Brothers in Arms Furious 4, but those never released enough information beyond them trailers to get truly hyped about.
Half-Life 3\episode 3. Nothing else comes to mind.
I'll echo someone else who said Prey 2 but it's not that I'm not interested anymore. More worried about what happened and curious as to where that game went.
This isn't really exactly what you're talking about, but my hype has gone way down on Starcraft because of the way Blizzard has trickled it out. Wings of Liberty swallowed up all the hype I had for the product and nothing they did really moved the needle for me in Heart of the Swarm. The typical Blizzard dev time really doesn't work well for expansions, I feel like.
Half Life 2: Episode 3
Final Fantasy Versus
Oh, I had totally forgotten about Final Fantasy Versus, I was super excited about that game, but now, meeeh..

To be fair, I think what they showed of FF15 looks interesting enough, just not enough to make me consider any hardware purchase or even actively expect the game. When its out, I might be interested again, but not before.
I learned that the hard way when my choice between PS3 and 360 was swayed by SE longtime relationship of exclusivity with Sony in anticipation to FF13. That... didn't turn out well.
@themanwithnoplan: That is another good one.
Except for Dark Souls and unlikely sequels to superb games I don't really pay attention to the game development period and instead just wait until a game turns out when it is released. I was still excited for Starcraft 2 when it came out; though it did more or less kill the US/EU Brood War community so I wish it was still in development.

I'm pretty sure Prey 2 got canceled :(
@phantomgardener Peeked at it's Wikipedia page just now and I...think it might not be cancelled. Maybe. Probably. Uuh...yeah.
In May 2013 Kotaku reported rumors that development has moved to Arkane Studios and that the development has been rebooted scrapping all of Human Head Studios work and with a targeted release of 2016. It has also been reported that Obsidian Entertainment worked on the game at one point for at least a few months.[16] In August 2013 Bethesda Softworks' Pete Hines denied rumors that Arkane Studios was working on the game.[17] However, on August 15, 2013, it was reported that leaked emails confirmed the game was in fact in development.
Go figure. If it's still coming but has been completely rebooted, I guess any interest from my part has vanished for good and I'll just hopefully be positively surprised when/if it pops back up on my radar. I sure would love to, the world needs more singleplayer sci-fi shooters with interesting setting. Last good one I played was probably Oddworld - Stranger's Wrath.
@glottery: Rebooted? Well thats just great. I bet 2016 is just a best case scenario then..
Firefall is kinda on my list though my lack of excitement for that game now stems from all the shit that went on behind the scenes and their inability to recover more so than how long it's been in development specifically. Then again, I guess they're kinda one in the same...
PSO 2 is another big one for me. I know you can download it and an english patch right now if you wanted to, but I was always holding out hope for a localized release and I think I waited too long because now I can't bring myself to care anymore.
Blade & Soul. Damn...it feels like yesterday that I was head over heels for that game, but now I don't even click on articles about it. I'm pretty sure that game was announced a good 4-5 years and has been in development even longer.
I don't think I've ever lost interest in a game just because the development was too long
Duke Nukem Forever?

I was never interested in that game, honestly.
Yeah I just get more hype the longer it takes. Sounds alien to me to stop getting excited because it's taking too long to come out.
I figured Half-Life 2: Episode 3 would be in every post. That's pretty much my answer, anyway.
I wasn't particularly interested in JRPG's until I played Chrono Trigger in 2012, so I didn't even know that FF Versus was taking forever to develop and finally got turned into FFXV. I hope that game is actually good.
Pretty much every project listed so far wasn't so much in straights forward development for this amount of time, rather they're projects that went rails or morphed dramatically at some point.
Smooth development seem to be around 2 or three years, maybe discounting some early concept stages where people work in sketchbooks in their homes after dinner. I don't think that's an overly long time with the production standards of AAA games now-a-days. It's also a question of when they start advertising them. I remember in E3 2010 when they showed Bioshock Infinite for the first time and a 2012 release window was stated I died a little inside. Even if it hadn't been delayed, 2+ years of pre-release advertisement is fuckin' stupid.
.
I've pretty much cooled %100 on The Last Guardian. If it ever comes out I'd probably pick it up, but it's working from the bottom at this point.
Half-Life 3/Episode 3 for sure. I wasn't that blown away by half-Life 2 in the first place, and now I just don't really care.
Also, the new brothers in arms game (not furious 4), even though gearbox has said bakers story isn't over, its been 6 years since Hells Highway and now I doubt if anybody cares
@babychoochoo: What shit went behind the scenes on Firefall? I've never did any research of the game. Just saw some gameplay videos and thinking it looked really cool.
@phantomgardener: It's mostly just really bad management. I think the post kinda touches on it, but the game went through quite a few massive overhauls and after a while it became clear the game was lacking in proper direction. Even after he was voted out though, a lot of the playerbase doesn't seem to thrilled with the current staff and people are just getting fed up. That said, there do seem to be plenty of happy players still playing so don't just take my word for it. It's just that personally I don't think the game is that fun at the moment and I honestly don't know if they can ever turn it into something special before it's eclipsed by a much better game.
